A rock climber died in Yosemite National Park over the weekend, a park spokeswoman reported Sunday. The climber's name was not released, pending family notification. Two male rock climbers went up Cathedral Peak on Saturday and told a ranger they planned to return Saturday after dark, said Yosemite park ranger Adrienne Freeman. The climbers were in their 30s or 40s; their hometowns were unavailable Sunday. The climbers chose a difficult route, which took them longer than expected. As the men were descending, the weather changed, Freeman said. It was very cold and windy and it started to sleet and snow during the early morning hours. One of the climbers walked out of the Cathedral Peak area Sunday around 7:30 a.m. and was picked up on the road by a ranger. The park service sent a rescue team to Cathedral Peak and found the other climber's body; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death is under investigation, but initial reports indicate it may have been weather related, Freeman said. The climbers' route is commonly done but technically challenging.

Hmm. I'm curious about why the climber left the other behind. Obviously there are very few details to this report, so I'm left hanging. The Tioga web cam is definitely showing snow in the high country. Tragic.

That's really sad. The guy's name was Charles Noble. From what I've heard, he was pretty good and had climbed in Yosemite many times.

It's always sad to hear about someone dying, especially if it's a fellow climber. My condolences go out to his family members.
