Florine & Hirayama miss El Cap Record

With crowds cheering in the meadow below, Hans Florine scrambled for the summit, trying to get back on the top of the leader board of El Capitan's "The Nose" speed record. Just over 2 minutes shy, he and Yuji Hirayama were disappointed, but inspired at the same time. After a little rest, they plan on trying again on Wednesday, coming back with TV crews and all. Hirayama believes that with rest and trying harder both physically and on technique they can beat it by 15-20 minutes. It is a big goal, but that is the mind state they need to even try it again. Good luck guys, climb safe!

2 minutes shy of the record.... while the rest of us would be glad to get up it at all. just curious - are they short fixing off single pieces with a clove hitch? I know this is risky for many reasons, but watching the video of the Huber's record climb, it appeared that way. |

Nice...its cool watching them when you are on the route...one second they are at the bottom and another they freakin pass you really cool perspective. |

How much fixed gear did they leave behind to help them go 4 minutes faster? |
