The GriGri was designed by Peter Popall as he had his little son belay him quite often and wasnt sure wether the kid could hold any of his falls. tying down his son to the ground and letting him belay with the grigri it was possible without that doubt. This was in 1989, in 1991 the GriGri was launched. P. Popall was technical director at Petzl at the time.
