If you haven't started letting them be responsible for their safety by about 8 years old, they will likely be relatively unprepared when they are 18. Parenting irresponsibly cuts both ways. But I will say, for me, there are a number of activities that I do for which I don't encourage even my adult children to do. They are totally on their own for making those choices. Examples include climbing and bicycle-commuting to school/work. Bill L
