My friend found an old 11mm rope in his storage garage that didn't show any signs of wear when we looked over it, however when I was being lowered off the warm-up route I could see lines of thread and a few suspicious looking marks on the rope. I got down alive but our day was abruptly ended on account of the unknown condition of the rope.
Does anyone have any advice on how to check a rope for micro-tears, lacerations, stressed areas and other damages?
Toss it. Molecular break down of the nylon is not detectable with the naked eye. Having no knowledge of it's age or history... toss it. It being 11mm is probably a fair indication of the age. Very few 11mm ropes have been sold in the last 15 years.
