With all the Protein Bars , Power Bars, which is your favorite choice? Recently I found some whole nuts and fruits with no sugar at whole foods. I generally dislike power bars or protein bars because they are so heavy. I used to like lemon luna bars but now they seem too sweet. So what's your choice for a protein bar or energy bar for climbing?

I took it right before a gym session and I have to say that I kicked ass. Maybe the best I've climbed in a while. Now, it was just one time. I will experiment a little more and maybe report back. Maybe it was coincidence, maybe not. Josh

Pro-Bar has my vote by far. Almost all of them are 350+ calories and actually taste like food. Otherwise good nutrition pre and post climb are more than enough for me to keep going on a bar or two for the day.

I go for the Cliff bars, there good tasting, & take up no space in the back pack, I tend to keep on in my bag at all times just in case I or a friend forgets a snack.

Drinking a protein shake, eating a protein bar, or just eating lean protein such as chicken or fish within 30 minutes of finishing a workout helps speed up recovery time. My son drinks a protein shake after lifting weights at school. Recently, we discovered a cliff bar that he likes and have started buying them.

Has anybody heard of people having stomach problems after eating a protein bar and then climbing. I have noticed that protein makes my stomach feel very heavy and that it is much more helpful for me to have my protein after a workout.

I like the Nature Valley Sweet n' salty nut bars. They are often on sale and cost 1/3 of a clif bar. Also, they are smaller/less calories than a clif, which I like. Also much easier to eat and digest with less water.

Neither. I go with my "Backcountrywich". Start with two pieces of high quality wheat, nut, seedy bread and slather a generous helping of peanut butter on both sides. Add raisins, peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dates (trail mix mixture you prefer but definitely needs some sort of dried fruit like raisins, dates, blueberries, etc. ) Then the key ingredient; pieces of dark chocolate or dark chocolate chips. Fold it together and voila, you have yourself a yummy, healthy, high energy, and great tasting treat that is easy to make, cheap to buy ingredients in bulk, and far superior to any "energy" bar on the market in protein and carbs. Might be a little higher in fat and calories and not quite as much protein as body building bars but damn my Backcountrywich as seen me through some adventures and I always look forward to it. YUMMERS!!!

Here is a good tip, if you write to Clif Bar asking for money or sponsorship or something they will just as likely give you a free case of product as a consolation prize. (Assuming you have some kind of adventure planned.) They supplied me with just such a case for a trip to the Pyrenees. It probably totalled over a hundred dollars of stuff if purchased at retail price. They also supplied me with free supply drops of Clif bar products for a bicycle trip which was already paid for by a vodka company.

jomagam wrote: Love the taste, but the 30% daily saturated fat allowance in it always makes me feel little guilty. Is that because it has no sugar? I think alot of bars, and desserts that have no sugar compensate for flavor by adding alot of saturated fat. I've noticed that when looking for a something tasty, its either high fat no sugar, or low fat with sugar. Then there are the low carbohydrate like Atkins, its quite confusing. So are you better off with low fat, and sugar, or no carbohydrate with alot of saturated fat? Of course if you can get no sugar and low fat and it tastes great well then you are in luck. I think the raw nuts and fruit bars with no sugar are the best choice some have sesame seeds, or pumpkin seeds too. Recently I've been going to a whole foods market, where I just get some of edamame with wasabi, and dried fruits and some pumpkin seeds. and if I feel extra hungry, a yogurt, I am also fond of protein drinks that are organic since I'm usually thirsty too.

It does have sugar (28 grams in a bar), but I don't mind that if it's the right kind. You do want quick fuel for your body when you're out climbing of hiking. I use energy protein bars only when I'm out in nature and no real food is available or it'd be too cumbersome to bring.

I'm a big fan of Clif Builder bars for my protein bar. They have a some sugar in them but it's not an overwhelming amount. My overall diet doesn't have much sugar in it so it balances out. For an energy bar I go with Clif bars or a home made bar with peanut butter, molasses, and whatever nuts I can find. If I'm at the gym I'll toss a sugar free redbull and gatorade into the mix.

Which I'd assume most of the people on this forum are... more so for my teeth. I am not as gifted as my sisters and their resiliency to cavities :( (Yes I brush my teeth plenty)

I wonder if tooth decaying bacteria follow the same GI index as humans?

Better grammar and punctuation too.

Asshole: I tried a few of these on a Red Rocks trip I just got back form and now I'm HOOKED! They taste so damn good. Going to be hard to look at my old favorite, Clif Mint/chocolate bars, ever again. Something that tastes that good can't be good for you Jay. In particular, the Double fudge and cookies and cream Promax bars....hmmmmm OMG! They cost more too. But seriously, thanks for the tip JT512. I'd never tasted one before, and now they are my bar of choice. Of note: they surprisingly carry (relatively) well in the heat. Some bars, like some Zonediet bars (mmmmmm, also good stuff) have frosting which turns to goo in your pockets and are hela-messy to peel mid-climb and then deal with a gooy wrapper as well.

In reply to: Something that tastes that good can't be good for you Jay. You mean the coconut oil and the 30% saturated fat content ? I eat it regardless.

For anybody looking for homemade bars where you can list the ingredients without having to ask a chemist, try these: Homemade, No-bake clif bars. They're great. I made like 35 of them before I left on my trip. The cost works out to about 30 cents per bar depending on how you cut them.

How do they hold up during travel? In other words, how long are they staying fresh and edible?

They become more and more brittle as time passes, but they're still fine to eat. They just sat in my foodbox without any refrigeration, and I just ate one yesterday. You may find that you need to play around with the amount of brown rice syrup/natural peanut butter.

I made a batch; they're damn tasty. I used sunflower seeds and dried cranberries. Also, I used molasses instead of brown rice syrup. Next time I'll increase the seeds to boost the protein.

Me: Three, but I will try and come back, ok? I've had my eye on that $1299 Trek bicycle Pemmican? There is a reindeer farm in Redmond Oregon which looks like they keep them there for Christmas Fantasies. Rudolph is there waiting. However, a closer look, and some questions lead me to the horror that some of the innocent reindeer are being eaten.

I tried to make Pemmican once...put nuts, Huckleberries and some home made jerky in a blender...problem was a chip of glass broke off and ended up in the Pemmican. When I gave a piece to my friend I heard a loud crunch, looked over and noticed a piece missing form the blender and made my buddy spit it out. Pemmican bar- wanna bleed?

JimTitt wrote: Protein=Steak Isotonic Drink=Beer Carbohydrate/Fats=French Fries Haha! I like your style My preferred protein bar is the Syntha-6 Bar by BSN. I only eat them on occasion though, whenever I'm lacking protein and I'm on the go. I would suggest avoiding these bars unless you are really in a bind. But if you want, you can check out the syntha 6 bars online, they should state all the nutrition facts.
