I'm guessing it's your span subtracted from height? (S)1725mm - (H)1685mm = a positive ape index of 40mm

it's armspan minus height. That's why a positive ape index is good. If your arms are longer than you are tall, it is good. ;)

but it would probably be better to use armspan divided by height. that way it wouldnt matter if you use cm or inches or anything. over 1 is good, less than 1 isnt good. but most people are used to substracting and it easier to calculate on the fly.

multiply your number of posts minus your last troll rating, then divide by the number of beers you consume in an average week. Take this number and add 3 then divide by how many pairs lyrca pants you own, multiplied by how many bm's you take after eating mexican. this will give a accurate ape reading.

+40mm sounds way better than 1.02. Still won't stop the features being 20mm further away than I can reach though. :)

I've got an ape index of: span: 1910mm height: 1790mm that makes 120mm positive, or 1.067 positive Does this make me an ape :? I like the sound of 120mm positive more than the 1.067 figure, but the 1.067 (the divided) figure is truly an index

120mm seems to be a freakishly large ape index. No chance you got your numbers back to front?

I would have to think that a negative ape index would be a very rare occurrence. Almost willing to say it would have to be the result of some sort of defect (if anyone out there does actually have a negative index my apologies for the defect comment).

Yeah, I think I'm a 1/1 person. But I'm still strange because I can't straighten my arms out all the way. If put my tricep down on a table I can't put the rest of my arm on the table...maybe a picture would help: http://www.redrival.com/...mages/Picture018.jpg That's as far down as I can put my hand. Try it, I'll bet you can put the back of your hand on your desk. I'm pointing my hand down, trying to touch the table with my pinky finger. I just don't unfold :D. Notice how the picture was taken while composing this post. Notice the stirfry that it looks like I'm putting my hand in and the crap everywhere. Sorry about the quality of the pic, it was taken with a camera phone.

Just to let you all know. I'm totally serious about my last post. I really have a -130 mm ape index. I always knew I had short arms, but leave it to rc.com to give me a complex about it.

Ever break your arm, pull a tendon, dislocate your shoulder, or bash your elbow too hard? Or maybe you just have tightly-socketed tendons/muscles. Or maybe you're a little tea pot? :) Both of mine go flat on the table, heh. Oh and stirfry = good.

It's very odd looking. ;) I can go a tiny bit further than straight, but not enough to notice. My ape index is 2.5 inches.

I always forget to ask a Dr. when I'm in the office. it's just a weard trate. When I straighten it out it's a solid stop, not a stretch, so maybe the bones are just tight. All of my immediate family can straighten their arms out so it's not genetic. Ahh, what am I going to do, I can never be the next Chris Sharma  LOL, anyway, thanks for the input :D and the stirfry was good.

I know of a guy who while only 5'6" has a +8" ape index. Seriously. I think I have a pic of him climbing out at RR, amazing to watch the reach that guy has (Kel you know him - ML!).

From some of the friends I've measured and from a few of the posts here, it seems as though women often have a smaller ape index than men. Anybody else care to comment on that?

I'm still growing but i had the impression that you were meant to grow to have arms the same length as your body (or within 1") so also put your age down because i think teenagers would be more varied than adults... and climbers with a larger ape index than non-climbers I am 5'11" with a 6'3" arm span, ive grown a bit lately but i think my arms have too so im about +4" or 10cm and 16 years old... -13cm is really strange g-funk, any genetic things or is it just short arms? Hehe i dont have hyperextendable elbows but im the only person i know who can put their feet backwards :P (like facing opposite way to me), legs behind head, knees forward feet sideways etc. anyone else have any of those strange body quirks/flexibility feats to go with the massive ape index climbers seem to have?

My guess by this thread is that ch'all are red-assed baboons. See, there's a difference. Myself, I'm a monkey. I've earned my fur the hard way and got a little gorilla steez to boot! Being an ape has nothing to do with yer body parts. It's what you do with em!! And it's in yer head. But mostly, it;s havin an untamable animal instinct to swing and jump off of things, and to make people laugh at said antics or pissed that you break everything doin it. My "wingspan" is about 1" shorter than my height...It doesn't seem to affect my climbing. I would say that an equal or slightly negative ape index is a pretty normal occurance.
