Thanks to all who have gotten back about carpooling. I think we can all hook up with rides so we can have minimal impact.Angelic

AAC = American Alpine Club.
...and they need some people to volunteer some time to help out Brittany Griffith with some setup stuff during the fest.

Also, I need either a ride from the LA area or some carpoolers to pitch in for a parking ticket ($45). I can fit 4 people in my Civic.

Being a climber and not knowing who the Access Fund, AAC, etc. are is somewhat akin to being a gun-rights advocate and not knowing what the NRA is. Sorry.

you people should take the opportunity to ask Brittany Griffith, Mark Wilford, Chris Schulte, and the other pros about this imperative need of yours to climb regularly in huge groups of 25+, the gangroping, esp at a small crag. at an annual gathering setting, that's as favorable as feedbacks are going to get

I took a course from her at the New River Rendezvous 2007. It was horrible. It was the crack climbing clinic. They had enough people signed up for the clinic that they ended up having another volunteer helping. I apologize, but I don't remember the other volunteer's name. I will call him Joe for the story's sake. It turned out that few people actually showed up that morning. We had somewhere just over 12 people total. Both Brittany and Joe taught the one clinic together.

We eventually make it down to the crag to start the clinic super late. The whole time she is complaining about how hung over she is from the party the night before. She also talks about how she is going to be meeting up with more friends for more partying as soon as she is done with the clinic. She eventually strings up one climb. Joe is giving some good ground school. I can tell he probably hasn't taught a ton of clinics, but he gave a great overview and was super attentive to answering our questions. She finishes that one climb, and does more talking about last night's and this coming afternoon's partying. People start doing the climb one at a time. There are at least 12 of us going through one top rope. She watches the first 1 maybe 2 people. Then she gets bored and tells more stories about partying yesterday and today.

At about the 8th person through the top rope, 4 of the climbers in the clinic say they really have to leave to catch a flight. Also, Joe decides to set up another climb for people. I volunteer to belay so that I can climb the first route next. Brittany decides that she is done with the clinic and that she has to go soon (for some unknown reason), but a professional photographer that is there to photograph her would like to try the climb too. This doesn't sound so bad since Brittany needs her rope in order to leave. I end up belaying the photographer too. This doesn't bother me. The photographer turns out to be at or below the general level of climbing that is attending the clinic, and the photographer takes a long time to get up the climb. Then the photographer has to switch out the ropes too. By the time the photographer switches the ropes out Joe has strung up climb number 2 of the day and a few of the people that have to catch the flight are able to get a lap in.

While I am belaying, Brittany decides to introduce a new belay technique that she then requires everyone to use. (Yes, she is leaving to party as soon as her photographer is done climbing, but we are supposed to continue on without her.) I have done the technique before, but I don't like it. Fine, I can use her technique. The technique is the constantly locked off style. I have a B52. It is has a little more friction than the standard ATC. I lift up slightly from FULLY locked off to ease pulling the rope through. Brittany proceeds to grab the rope and show the technique again WHILE A CLIMBER IS HALF WAY UP THE CLIFF. She does this at least 3 times, and tells me to remove my hands from my belay device while she shows me how to belay. Each time she shows the full technique, but doesn't actually ever make a statement as to what she is attempting to correct. I eventually figure out that she doesn't like that I am lifting my hands slightly out of full lock off. So, I modify just to keep her from putting the climber in danger again. This is the one thing I remember her actually teaching during the whole clinic, but she did a horrible job of getting it across to a person that already knows the technique.

After the photographer finishes the climb and cleaning, Brittany, Joe, and photographer catch a ride with the people that are leaving for the flight. Myself and one other person have yet to even get on the first climb of the day. Everyone else gives the second climb a quick go without any type of oversight or recommendations on technique.

So, I can understand how people would say that she is a cool person because she is all about the party, but I would recommend you never take a clinic from her.

Thanks!
