Many people have brought up good points.(in no particular order):

shoot RAW (the extra information will reduce posterizaton when you process); bring a reflector; meter properly, check the histogram (if digital, shoot negative film otherwise) and make sure that the highlight is just short of being blown, do this before the climber even gets on the rock.

in post you can try to adjust curves a bit, and if that doesn't work try a technique called contrast maksing which will bring the shadow detail up and the highlights down. http://luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/contrast_masking.shtml

HDRi is an effective technique but you really need a stationary subject and a tripod. Keep it in mind though.

Flash fill at -1.5 to -1.7 would work. You dont want to over power the natural light or the dark shadow.

A gold reflector to fill light on the climber would be the best, but their can be limitations on shotting action shots with reflectors.

Dodge and burning on film or the computer. If this was a once in a life time shot its really your only choice.
