Funny how the idea of Greek guys in the nude and the origin of the word beta sorta link in with the tortured and obscur history of Gunks climbing...

I have to concur with Jay. I studied this one quarter in college. Of further interest is that Socrates and Plato were climbers. It is said that Plato used to seek his teachers advice on certain climbs by asking "Master, is the crux a crimper to a dead-point" The term Master and Beta were later combined into "Master-beta".

And I quote from "explore" October 2001 article "Hail to the Chief":

'Above all else you must collect "beta." The term was coined by an American, Jack Mileski, to refer to the hints, trade secrets and Yoda-like insight that help a climber get from bottom to top. The definition is constantly expanding, so there is now beta on pubs, on campsites, on the best approach to an eligible bachelor.'

Quite a good article actually. It was the one that got me into climbing in the first place.

Just a little adendum for old Jack Mileski. The woman who shot him to death in his sleep and then got off on a technicality has now been sent to prison for the rest of her life. From texasclimbers.com:

"...I was the jury foreman for her latest trial, she's still guilty as hell. Hopefully the system will work better this time and give Jack's family some closure to this matter that should never have happend. If your not sure who Jack was, type in his name, he's all over the net for his contributions to the climbing community. Losing him was a great, great loss!"

Here's a little tribute to Jack with some pictures of him:

I had always wondered what happened. For those who may be interested, I found quite a bit about the case and the appeal here:
