In reply to: Become a well-rounded climber. Try trad, boulder and sport. Bag a peak or two. Climb some ice. There's more out there than what you know and it just may change your life. Don't be afraid to believe in something. If sticking bolts in rock is something you ethically don't agree with, stick with that belief in spite of people who tell you you should try everything. Just make sure when you rip on those sport-climbin' boltin-weenies, you do it with a smile. We're a lot more alike than different.

Wow great stuff. I will only add the following. More important than knowing your limitations is understanding your strengths.

In reply to: make sure you wear lots of prAna stuff. If you don't you won't fit in and the other climbers will make fun of you. wait till the newbies read this one. be sure to wear only one article of prana clothing. if you wear all prana, we'll know you're a newbie and make fun of you anyways... unless you're a girl, in which case we'll be in love.

Prana rocks sport wanna be. Why bash clothing? Why bash at all? I am just exercising Newton's second law: every force has an equal and opposite force. What do you climb in, emimen rags?

Great stuff. A few of my own: Respect the environment in which you climb. It is your duty to pass on what you have learned. No matter how experienced a person is, don't discount your own opinion and common sense. As far as choosing climbing over your lover, thank God I didn't have to do that. Climbing makes are relationship stronger. and.... NEVER forget that one mistake can make you dead. Double check everything. Josh

I only have a few... Bring your love for the world, leave only footprints. Never believe you know it all. Pain endured while climbing is good pain. When you finish a climb, shake hands/hug your partner for a job well done. That's all I've got. Mr. Mons

In reply to: No matter how experienced a person is, don't discount your own opinion and common sense. IMO - this is one of the two most important things. The second is learn how to get yourself or a fellow climber safely off the rock when things go wrong. Don't just memorize a book like "Self-Rescue". Take the time to understand the different techniques and why they work. I like to go to a local TR crag to brush up at the start of every year.

Guide a visitor around your area Climb in a place where you are the person who needs to be guided around Never place a bad bolt Never chip a hold Become a really good spotter Save somebody's ass with a great spot Only offer beta when it's requested -- and only if you really know Never spew beta you know won't help Sandbag your friends Don't sandbag strangers Try, fall off, then honestly encourage your partner to pull through Hang at camp, and talk about something other than climbing Spend a precious climbing day doing trail work or cleanup work Go on an extended climbing trip Spend an important holiday on a climb Climb a route one of your friends died on Stay alive and climbing long enough to take your kid to the crags

Wow....nice thread. Hard to add any but here goes. Finish a climb just as the sun rises. Finish a climb just as the sun sets. (don't forget your headlamps) Take the time to look around while your climbing don't just focus on the climb itself. Enjoy the whole experience. Don't be reckless; a bad day climbing = dead or worse Chris

Don't lower the climber until he says so. (I got lowered into a bush once.) Don't take your partner off belay until he say so. (I was taken off belay because my partner assumed I was safe.) Reiterate the basics until they are second nature. Peace!
