We just have to get you toe and heel hooking Jake, and now knee barring too. Its that gym climbing making soft! Those are awesome moves to give your arms a break. Kudos to Jules for joining me in giving blood to the Rumney rock. I had to wipe it off my locker the other day. Made my gear look used and abused, imagine that.

JEEZ Sue...not like we're making you lead. Better to wear pants anyway with the blood sucking mosquitoes, you know how they just love you. You're better than a bug zapper.

Paul- if you want to get together for a day of testing out our feeble injured bodies, I'm down.

Sounds good Josh. Give me a shout or PM me your number.

I'm really enjoying this talk about leader falls and gear. As a new climber/ leader/follower/belayer it is interesting to see ALL the different perspectives. Being 3-5-10-20 feet above your last piece of gear is frightening. Leading is at least as much a head game as a physical game. It is part of the attraction to this sport. I've never felt more alive than the times I've been scared half to death. And a good healthy dose of not wanting to be dead is what keeps you alive. And like Pie wrote earlier, this aint exactly a safe sport. There are things you can do to make it safer, chief among them is learn what the heck you're doing from someone competant to teach you, but you are still putting yourself in harms way every time you rope up. Deal with it, decide what level of commitment you are comfortable with, and make sure your life insurance is paid up. All of us have accepted a certain degree of risk by practicing this sport. If you don't want risk, play badmitten. That said, I'll climb with JJeff any day of the week, because he had the sense to back off when it wasn't right. Smart guy.

FWIW,

Jeremy, I'm behind you 100% with the "hangover is no excuse to not go" thing. As far as keeping up while hungover...

Passing this on from the ClimbRI Yahoo Group.
Seems the New Paltz Gendarmes have a budget deficit to resolve...

BUSTED!!!! Beware !!!!. Arraigned and detained for camping @ the multi-purpose
area Gunks. On Memorial day. It was a well planned dragnet. The Rangers tell us
it will happend every weekend at any time of the day or night.
15 people along with 4 in my group ( My group was not a AMC trip) were all
detained then arraigned for illegal camping @ the Multi-purpose area Rt 299 -
New Paltz. The Crack down has begun. A message from the Forest Service has
certainely been sent. Only 29 sites have been designated for legal camping. This
number will be decreasing in the future. They are marked with a yellow metal
disc nailed to a tree. If you are not in those sites you will be fined - any
where from $25-250 depending on the mood of the judge.
Here is what happen. We had camped off a trail about 500 feet away from the
road down a cleared path in a site that had been cleared, with a well built fire
place. Looked good to us. We did not know about the yellow disc. Due to the fact
that those rules are not posted @ the camping are on the right side of 299. They
are only posted at the entrance with a map on the left side. Which is the main
are about 600 feet apart. (These are new rules as of Sept. 18. 2003 Check out
the Gunks climbers coalition site @ www.gunkclimbers.org also check out the open
forum on www.gunks.com )
The rangers awoke us @ 8:00 am banging on tents demanding driver's
licenses. Telling all of us to pack up and meet them at the main Multi-purpose
parking area. There we sat for 1 hour as they wrote each on of us a violation
ticket. Then they held on to our licenses saying that we are all being detained
and that we all have a 9:30 court apperance with the judge. Who will determine
what the fine will be. On of the detainee's was not happy with the rangers who
were packing guns and handcuffs. Due to his belligerence he was cuffed and
picked up by a State trooper. They said that he was under arrest. The judge said
that he would catch a nigh in jail unless bond could be met. This all before a
cup of coffee ...after a night of happy cheer.
The judge asked if anyone wanted to plead not guilty or if we plead guilty
the fine was $50.00 and you get your license back. The decision was easy for me.
I wanted this epic to end. It was time for a coffee and food . So @ 11:00 am we
were on our way. Not to return to the Multi-purpose area again. 12 years never a
problem. It is sad to see the area close. So keep the letters going and please
check out the map and camp only in those designated area's. They are few and
far between. The rangers also said that they will confiscate any tents or
property left in a illegal campsite area. Luckily for us they did not do thier
bust until Monday, since we had left our tents thier on Sat.+Sun.
Just wanted to pass this message along....This area is with out doubt being
threaten to closure. Please be part of the solution not the problem!

PTN... thanks for the heads-up. I've stayed there every time I've been to the Gunks. Though I have to admit its annoying to deal with the loud drunken kids swinging burning sticks above their heads and performing some weird, tribal ritual, its convenient and free. Heck, I'd even pay a few bucks to stay there. I don't ask for much... just a small amount of ground to put the tent on.

Taino, have you been staying there? Where are the "approved" campsites? If not there, where? Camp Slime? Is 11:00 on a friday night too late to get a spot there? Am I going to be stuck in a hotel Friday night?

Bloody hell.

I've actually been staying at a friend's house in Wappingers Falls at need (I tend to make the drive back and forth), but I was planning on staying at the MUA this coming weekend. Guess I'll have to change my plans. I've never stayed at Camp Slime, but I'll do some checking around. A hotel might be a necessity; either that, or the Hostel - if they're open that late.

Mental note - make sure to get one of the campsites on Saturday night, too. Bloody hell.

Sue, I've known some female rock climbers who still got manicures, but a string player? I've played a little violin and a lot of guitar... and I know fingernails don't belong anywhere near a fretboard :)

Oh *sigh*...Chris, are you the only one that knows me? If you guys saw my nails you'd think I was a truck driver!! I think I've had one manicure in my whole life...and that was about 20 years ago for a wedding or some such nonsense. Kevin, I do hope you were kidding, since you have seen my hands and yea, no nails and many calluses for this string player. um...I guess my need to make everything into a joke comes from spending my days with two crazy kids (chris, you know what I mean, I'm sure!) So...if it's not raining, count me in for Rumney....and Kevin, as of now count me in for the Gunks...I'll pay for one of the hotel rooms if it comes to that.

cheers!

ps. if it clears a little I might take my boy (son) to HP for some bouldering if anyone's in the area....do they have a nail salon at the mall?

Hey Jake, you just gave me an awesome excuse for biting my nails although climbing trashes them anyway. Crimping would be impossible with longer ones. I don't feel so bad now. Not that I ever felt too bad about it, there's worse habits. And don't encourage me to buy more gear. I'm already going to be tempted this morning as it is. It would be fun to find one of those fancey clipping biners and flash it in your face.

Sue, yeah i knew you were joking... you have nails that any female climber should be proud of :) I have one friend from college that loved to climb, but insisted on having nice nails, and another friend who wants to play guitar but doesn't want to cut her nails... they'll figure it out eventually :)

Darn, I forgot about when the forestry office will be open. I bet its at 9. You want me to see if EMS sells them, I'm headed there today. I could get 1 or 2 for you.

The weather is looking up. I'm so psyched. A whole day of climbing for me. Life is good. :)

Sue, I just called and the forestry office opens at 8:30. Perfect. Just get off at exit 23 and its across the street in a yellow (I think) building. You may have to do a u-turn in the park and ride road. Its the next and only building between there and the northbound ramp.

In reply to:
Anybody know which route the climber was on when he took the leader fall? I sure hope he's ok.

One of the doctors on the scene is a friend of mine; I coach his son at the Dover Gym. We were all there last night and he said that the climber most likely had broken his tibia. Since the climber could feel his toes and wasn't in undue amounts of pain, Bill immobilized it and recommended that he suck it up and go to the emergency room at Concord Hospital rather than subject himself to paramedics or the local hospital. Whether he heeded the advice, we don't know.

Owie, so much for him climbing this summer if its that bad. If you can find out the route I'd appreciate it. Boyfriend wants to make sure bolt placements are fine I think and not just. It sounded like he was clipping the third bolt but still hit the ground, is that right? Maybe I misundersdtood though or there was a lot of slack out maybe.
