petsfed wrote: Just to be clear, there is no "climbing community" any more than there is a "camry owning community". Yes, we all climb. But that's pretty much all we're guaranteed to have in common. The days where the total number of climbers in the country numbered in the 1-2 thousand are long since dead. There are simply too many of us, and we've become highly factionalized as a result. There will be conflicts between climbers when they factionalize like that. And not just between gym climbers and "outdoor" climbers. Not just between trad climbers and sport climbers. But simply between people. Please realize that climbing doesn't attract exclusively the conflict free personalities. The act of climbing doesn't make you a good person. An asshole who starts climbing will still be an asshole, no matter how much he "gives back to the community" in the form of route development or volunteer time. I've seen it way too often. Some people really are just jerks. Remember that real respect, not just basic human decency, is earned, not given. So if you find the Tuscon gym climbers to be standoffish, do something to earn their respect. Be friendly with them. Don't just walk in expecting that they'll treat you as an equal. Nobody owes you that right out of the gate. To echo this and go a bit further, there is no community of people where this doesn't exist. Even in highly self selecting communities based on shared intrinsic values share this conflict (think monasteries). The sooner you enjoy it, in a detached way, the happier your life will be.

In reply to: Also, another example of this stigma are many of the posts on rc.com. I love rc.com and like to be a part of it, but it feels so superficial when it creates barriers and people forget that they can respecfully disagree on an issue, and have an open mind. Very well said to all you said especially that part above! Though I have to say never had a problem with anyone it any climbing gym I've gone to, always been positive, maybe it's just the gym where YOU climb.

any large group of people can represent a cross section of society as a whole, and therfore you'll get a mix of just what the real world is- nice people, mean people, stupid people, etc. It's easy to romanticize a group of people you have never met if they share a common passion with you.

I think it has to do with egos, and what people have to tell themselves(others) to keep the beast fed. I used to feed the monster alot, but then I got tired of it, and I killed the beast. Or I'm just telling my ego that so that I can feel smug and "above the problem" So who knows. dev

It's a buzzkill and can get discouraging i think i can understand that. Focus on climbing and not pay attention none of that crap matters when you're reaching for the crux and you start to get disco leg and you can't remember the the crucial beta you figured out right before that last whipper, crap then you get scared of losing it again and then...well you get the point. the ground level politics it pretty unimportant, if you truely think about it, we just have to fight instinct sometimes and be less social creatures

Well, good. I heard Burns is getting banzed. If all I accomplished with my post was the weeding out of someone who deserved to be banzed, at least he won't harrass anyone again. boooooooo to harrasment.
