Climbing is all grip strength, shoulder strength, leg strength and core strength

After climbing I like to do 4 sets of pullups. 2 sets on the rock rings using the 4 finger holds. These are harder than regular pullups obviously because you have less room to grip and you are using your core (if you do them properly) to keep the rock rings stable and keep your movement slow and proper.

Then I do 2 sets of wide grip pullups, purely for physique since the rock rings are better for climbing.

Then I'll finish off my grip by hanging by the very last rock ring hold which is extremely small for 2 sets. I can get about 10 solid seconds on that before I slip off.

On off days, I like to do 4 sets of pushups, 2 sets of planks and 2 sets of side planks. I do 2 sets of tricep pushups and then 2 sets of wide ones. This will strengthen your chest and tris since rock climbing doesn't. The planks will give you incredible core strength and are better for your abs than pretty much every other ab exercise (except hanging knee raises).

As for leg strength, I've just been jumping rope. I will be hitting the gym this september and will most likely be doing explosive stuff for the legs

Along the same lines, please read this article http://www.mikedoyle.ca/...bing/coachingdoc.pdf it outlines everything said above and in more detail.

So what do people think is the boundary between "people who climb" and "climbers", or "n00b" vs. "legit", etc.? 5.10? 5.11? 5.9 trad multipitch?

Someone mentioned "leading 5.10" as a criteria earlier in this thread, that's what made me wonder.

I think what helped me the most is just going out climbing with people who are better and more technically sound than myself. Becuase while you watch them climb the same stuff you try you can see how you do it and the easier way usually.

The only thing you have to be careful of is not to push yourself too much if your physical conditioning isn't up to par because you'll be prone to injury.

The grade at which someone climbs has nothing to do with it. The truth is is that everyone's a n00b until they aren't. And when your aren't then you will know. So will everyone else. It's really that simple.

Sport or trad? Indoors or out? Crack or face? Can they onsight any 10 at any area? Get my drift. Grades are subjective. Being a good climber is more about mileage, decision making, knowledge and risk management. I know some very strong kids who probably couldn't rescue a cat stuck in a paper bag.

First trick that helped considerably was learning backstepping and rotating through the shoulders (with arms straight). That technique was demonstrated to me and explained, then I had to practice until it became natural. What I learned through experience was knowing where my center of gravity was: what move would keep me on the wall vs. pull me off. I can't explain how to learn that. Read the route before starting and while climbing, a few moves ahead when you are at a rest spot. Once I got use to these "techniques" I found that moving my feet high in order to push myself to hand holds (rather than trying to dyno or pull myself there) helped immensely. At my limit, on an overhang, moving my feet high saves me so much arm strength and endurance!

To the OP: what helped me the most when starting out climbing were partners that I was comfortable with, and a climbing area that offered as many different techniques as I could name, and many that I couldn't. I began trad climbing and bouldering after a number of years of simply top rope climbing, so I had the systems down and a good deal of comfort on rock, so when I moved up to leading, I could focus on fewer things than someone who is trying to lead for the first time and is still figuring out climbing techniques. start slow, don't be in a hurry, and learn as much as you can from people you trust.

- Climbing with stronger people than me. It's always nice to get to climb with nice V10 climbers even if you're not there yet. They try to help you with advices. And it's good for the motivation.

- Understand how you body moves and reacts. How to keep you close to the wall, dropknee, balance shift, backstep, etc.

- To stop thinking about the fall, and just climb. When leading mostly. Just go ahead and try the crux moves even if you're over your last draw.
