This is true, but climbing doesn't really develop bulk muscle mass. Since the limiting strength factor for climbing is normally tiny little muscles in the forearms, the muscles that get developed by climbing aren't going to burn a lot of calories. Your argument is faulty. Maximum force exerted by the forearms isn't necessarily correlated well to overall workout calorie expenditure.

Tony452, I've been there and done that. I started climbing seven years ago at 260lbs. A friend took me out to climb and I got hooked and obsessed with climbing. All the advice about climb easy to prevent injury is correct, but keep climbing. I'm now 195lbs and a much better climber after pulling on that weight as it was falling off of me. I now climb 5.10+ and in a couple months at 175lbs there is no telling what I will be climbing.

Hi Tony! I've been there as well. I started climbing when I was around 100kg and my height is 169cm so I was overweight. Now I'm around 90kg but have lost a lot of fat and gained muscle instead by just climbing. I've been climbing actively for about 6 months now and progressed well. I really don't know the facts on is climbing a good for loosing weight and how much calories do you burn. I just think it's, for me at least to do sports as I could not really imagine myself to a normal gym. Go for it, take it easy in the beginning and you will see a lot of progress in just few months! Have fun and enjoy the great atmosphere that climbing gives you.

If I understand Calvo correctly, he was pointing out benefit of that fact that muscles burn calories, even when at rest. So the increased muscle tone due to climbing would burn extra calories 24 hours a day. I was just commenting that climbing doesn't develop much muscle mass, so this benefit is small.
