Do any of you all remember www.smackmag.com? It was the forerunner to CXM. It was glorious. Better than CXM in my opinion. I only ended up going to CXM because smackmag shut down.

It's time to save the site, dammit, and donations from the public aren't going to do it! I am short on time and long on apathy, so I willl propose an idea to you lot, and check back to see if anyone picks up the balls and runs with it. Post ideas here, or in another topic labelled "save CXM" or something.

the idea: Petition companies. rockclimbing.com has tens of thousands of members. If we contacted climbing companies and let them know approximately how much we spend on gear each year, and that we WANT CXM to be up, they may take notice and do something. On the downside, the format may become more commercialized, with large banners of Xbrand's latest shoe, etc., but if the vids are there, all is well, right?
So... now the ball is in your court. Devise/organize how to convey this information to a mass of climbing companies efficiently and still make the petition valid and supportable (Joe Blow can't sign it 50 times, etc.).

What an idea, lets make companies we pay for what we want. Why where at it maybe we can make telephone companies pay our cell phone bills to, you know since they are responsible for it!! HA.

Why do you get the Idea that climbing companies are responsible to foot the bill for cXm? They have a right to choose who they advertise with. Not to mention climb industry is not a billion or million dollar industry here, they just can throw cash peoples way for the heck of it. Companies are trying to make a living, they don't have endless pits of money. Not to mention how much they do already for us by donating tons of prizes to comps. and sponsering climbers.. give the pros jobs so we can watch videos of them. They give back tremedously. Look at the Fortune 500 companies and see how much money they just give away to there clients? Do you see Gateway giving computers to hundreds of computer comps. for prizes? Do you see a pro Gateway computer user and people watching videos of them online? How about Football, how many pro football teams give prizes to young football championships? None. Climbing Companies do a hell of a lot for us, How much more do you want from them, maybe they can just hire a personal trainer for you so you can climb v14, is that doing enough for you?

Not to mention how lazy Wandt is, Giving a suggestion that allready been said and telling us he is done, now its someone elses job to organize it!!! Your the laziest bloodsucker i've seen post a message!

ok it is one thing to point out why someone's idea is less-than-ideal, but lets not resort to flaming here. the point is to do something about this, and to hopefully prevent it from happening at RC.com and/or get cxm back up or get vids here.

and as soon as i have $$ to spare i will donate to RC.com. i just bought dragons, digital camera, need a resole, and have no job, so $$ is a bit short at the moment.

and Tim, i may be overstimating the market, but like i said, that is easy enough to determine. just get an alphabetized member list, assign numbers to each (you don't have to physically do it, just start at 01 and end at whatever..) and randomly select like 100 people to send the following PM to:

"How much money (USD) each month would you be willing to contribute for a video service comparable to that of cxm, in quality and speed?

Would you be willing to contribute your own videos?"

simple statistics can then get a pretty good estimate of the population mean for money per month that would be contributed... you can construct, say, a 95% or 99% confidence interval, and as long as the entire interval is above the cost/month of such a service, we are good to go (financially... there are still the logistics of actually getting good videos - but this would be factored into the cost).

anyway i suggest someone here with access to an master list of users try this... at least see where we stand as a community. make the sample size large enough so that even if only half respond we will still have plenty of responses.

if you tell me where to get a master list of users, and an easy way to PM the selected people (i don't want to do it manually 100 times - if there is like a "copy" option like for email) i will be happy to do it. it would be great if the list only had people who have visited the site in, say, the last 3 months or whatever - we don't want to sample people who were here once last year...

It's great that you guys love CXM so much. Take some time and do what you need to do to try and save these guys - but don't spam this forums members just to get some leverage.

The site was OK, but I stopped going there awhile ago because it's design SUCKED. It was imposible to navigate, the text was a graphic file, for Christ's sake, and the videos were wayyyy slow to download. And for those people who didn't already know about the site, and may have trying to find "climbing videos" on google, they wouldn't find CXM. Why? because there was zero indexable text for the search engines to use for ranking and keyword indexing. CXM was a gross misuse of Macromedia Flash. Plain and simple. Flash is for animation, not for designing entire websites.

Do you remember boo.com? It was an all-flash retail site that failed miserably, but still managed to go through millions in capitol before it sunk. Most poorly designed and poorly conceived sites have gone under, and for a good reason - they didn't hit the mark. CXM needed to make some serious changes, IMO, both in it's biz model and in it's delivery. Many of you may have been entertained by all of this, but the advertisers were not.

Let the CXM sort this out and come back better than before - or let someone else fill the the niche who can improve on this concept.

It's a website. For god's sake you all have more time to climb now! Why watch others climb when you could go climb yourself? Yes, I know there is work and nighttime (these are arguable for some) when you can't climb, but I thought the site sucked! They updated it with the "monthly dose" (which was never monthly) for a while which WAS awesome, there were the protips which were equally awesome, and other stuff. Then for about a year they did NOTHING except the stupid video contests. There were no doses, protips, and even that other random category I can't think of right now wasn't updated often for a while. They stopped making new videos because they were making $ off of the "dosage." They went from providing a cool often updated website to a crappy one that stagnated as soon as they were making $ off their product. Where did that $ go by the way, when they were selling those things at $30 a piece :!: :?: Let the site go guys... it certainly let itself go...

Odd that football doesn't. Pro basketball, hockey and lacrosse are all extremely generous in the community, not just with prizes, but with sponsorships for teams, leagues, etc. etc. etc. And actually... I'm pretty sure the CFL is involved with the community too. I guess you were referring to the NFL.

And as far as being lazy... I'm really just more apathetic. CXM was nice, but if I can't be bothered to type their entire name, do you expect me to save them? I was suggesting a course of action for a hard-core follower.

PS. Thanks for your sparkling and valuable contribution to the forum.

????

Check out the flash gallery on Macromedia's website and I believe it may change your opinion about the validity of flash...
CXM was VERY easy to navigate-something I believe most RC users will tell you.
