So if technology can't be used and grades can't be pushed (todays 5.12 becomes like a 5.10) why is it that beginners routinely climb stuff that the old-skool boys thought was at the very limits of climbing?

Hmmmm, answer me dat!

i dont know if youre aware of the fact that some scientists have managed to duplicate the geckos gripping surfaces. something to do with ultrathin hairs and mulecular bindings, but i dont feel like explaining.

the point is, if you put such gloves on, you could climb on a horizontal piece of glass. now, i agree that such technology would push the limits of what you can climb (you cant climb glass with your fancy gloves, can you?!?) but the would also sure as hell cause climbing to become REALLY BORING.

isnt it better to know that you worked your a$$ off a problem and sent it without gloves than knowing in the back of your brain that youre a wimp that has to depend on technical accesories to push through that "v10" boulder so "steep" he cant even look at it.

There are gloves avaliable now that are made of very thin spandex like material and the palm side is covered with .5mm C4 rubber! They are absolutely amazing! The sensitivity is waaaay good and you can stick slopers that you've only dreamed of. They are imported from Italy, let me know if you're interested and I can hook you up!

DUDE!!! THAT IS WAY SICK BRAH!!! But I think I'll pass. I like climbing for many reasons. One of the more important ones is because it's challenging. If you take the challenge away, you take the satisfaction too.

I just have one comment.

We cover our feet because we have to, and occasionally we uncover them to get the respected barefoot ascent. If UNcovering your usually covered feet on a difficult ascent is considered an amazing feat (no punn intended) then it seems covering your hands would be the extreme opposite, and quite UNnotable. Why should we cover our hands? I can't imagine NOT feeling the course texture of the rock on my fingertips. These gloves are bad news.

HOWEVER, I do have a suggestion for the manufacturers:

These gloves would seem to be an ideal item for alpine routes, when remote big walls require technical climbing. Afterall, our usually uncovered hands generally make exceptions for the cold weather.

I would think that the only valid excuse for wearing cheater gloves would be winter climbing where gloves would be worn anyways. Any warm weather use would just be lame.

I would love to climb a huge, vertical piece of glass.
If people climb with shoes or barefoot, and both are acceptable, then it seems to me that sticky gloves or not would be swell as well.
There are a couple banyan trees near my house that are great fun, great risk and great challange to climb. If I could have some sort of glove that would allow me to get out to those impossible-to-reach areas I would certainly use them so that I might see what life is like from those far out branches.

Trolls are funny to read:-) I've never tried my hand at one but is there a sense of accomplishment in them? We should have a page with the best trolls archived. Maybe a how to on making successful trolls:-)

[quote="koto"][quote="climber49er"]Call me a purist but if I saw someone with these gloves on they would automatically qualify for the title of "limp penised p*ssy" (yep, even if they were a girl! )

Don't worry, I won't call you a "purist" unless you forego the advantage of wearing climbing shoes and using chalk. After all, if we allow sticky rubber on our feet, how can we lambast the use of the same substance on one's hands?

Chalk, sticky rubber, and wire brushes used to scrape off moss, lichen and loose grit all give us an advantage and automatically disqualify us from the category of "purist"; people made these same kind of remarks about Fire rubber when it first came out. Those people eventually shut up and laced up their Fires sheepishly in quiet corners. If these new gloves give any true advantage, I predict they will, in time, be embraced and accepted by climbers.

So your saying that wearing gloves is a little to far. What about when they invented climbing shoes? Did the old timers complain when special shoes were made for rock climbing. Or did they say "Man these things are pretty cool." If you are going to complain about using new stuff. Throw away your climbing shoes, and really go hard core.

Well think about this, you are in a bouldering comp and you are wearing these (not that you would, but) when you win. If you were another contestant, would that make you happy?

Dude, if he has stickier rubber on his shoes should he feel bad if he beats me? Anything for an edge brah!

I pulled a sick V9 with these gloves today, I couldn't make the first move without them!

You understand that gloves didn't bring you up to v9, right? They brought v9 down to you. If that's OK with you, then have at it. Won't affect my climbing in the slightest.

Who knows what the future will bring? Maybe this is the next sticky shoe, cam, chalk or bolt, e.g., once regarded as "cheating" and now mainstream. But right now, I think you'll be hard pressed to find any comp organizer who will let you compete with sticky gloves.

I ordered a pair 2 years ago and I still have them and they work great and are in great shape. I couldn't find a picture of them so I didn't add them to the gear section so I could do a review. If you get a chance buy some.

I know I'm responding to an old troll, but, I'm going to throw out some of my own style ethics and questions about others here. It seems like a good place to add some discussion of ethics and evaluation of them in climbing.

To me, shoes are fair game, tape is acceptable for protection, hand jammies are a non issue because the reduce performance, knee pads are OK (though I never use them), rubber coated knee pads seem ghey (but they generally make the knee too wide to get into the crack, therefore they are a hinderance). Taping fingers or hands for extra thickness feels very wrong to me. Fortunately, I hate the feel of tape and only use it at Vedauwoo where it's sharper and steeper than average.

In my mind, it all comes down to intention. Did I tape my hands to make them the perfect size for my climb? Or did I tape to avoid the hamburger hands? I know myself and I overanalyze my climbing. I could not live with myself if I sent a hard line knowing this was due to a size advantage I gained when taping. And now the tale of two climbers (neither one of them is me).

One is a former very hard climber who still likes to get out and climb hard sometimes. He got shut down on an overhanging hand/hand stack crack. He added about 1 total roll of tape to his thumbs and pinky and was able to fist jam much of the route. Still, it was probably no easier than 11d, (sport climber equivalency = 16a, Boulder canyon converversion = 12+)

Another day, a young hotshot who has sent upwards of 13a (in ALL sizes of cracks) tried it and almost onsighted it. He'll likely get it next time. His tape was normal. He's at least twice the climber of the older guy, yet he hasn't completed this climb. If this were a competition, this would definately need and asterisk.

Before you speak of the "well it doesn't matter as long as they are both having fun" BS arguement, take into account that they are both (at least locally) famous climbers and people are paying close attention. Also keep in mind that this is a slippery slope. What shade of gray do you stand on. I do not think this matters to the average (non-known) climber, so long as he/she does not spray of accomplishments using shady techniques.

Full a shiff er, I feel climbing can be more enjoyably if you don't compare your abilitys to others; push your own limits. If someone wants to make a hard problem with slopers easier let them. What ever makes one happy, as long as it doesn't impede others, makes the wold just a little better place.

just thoughs.
 WTF!.....ethicly?NO!....ok....if you do a FA on some massively hard route...then gumbie comes along and does it with these 'gloves'....wouldn't you feel cheated and your efforts insulted?

Gotta figure things are pretty boring on rc.com when a discussion edges toward the slippery slope of debating the ethics of using a product that doesn't exist. :P

I'm going to start a new thread: is it cheating to use Petzl's new anti-gravity harness (other than in free soloing)?
