When was "defying gravity" anything BUT a self absorbed pursuit? That's what's so great about it, in my opinion.

When or how was "defiance of gravity" anything EXCEPT a self absorbed pursuit? We each climb for our own reasons, but basically, it is to satisfy some need within OURSELVES. In the BIG picture, climbing, has almost no importance whatsoever. Of course, to climbers, climbing has a tremendous impact on our lives, our being....we feel most ALIVE when we climb. So I guess it is the collective feeling of ALIVENESS we experience when we climb which makes up the soul of climbing. Seems to be doing ok inside me lately. Yup, still alive, still climbing.

In reply to: Hmmm, where is the soul of climbing? Has anyone seen the Soul? Where's the Confounded Soul? Is it to be found in the old duffer...Is it in the Muir-like naturalist...the zen boulderer...the interested and friendly master down at the gym...Is it to be found in the historian...Is it to be found in the brilliant mountaineering photographer...Is the spirit of climbing to be found along the line of beany wearing pad people chanting "Hi-Ho Hi-Ho, Off to Boulder We Go"...Is the soul of climbing to be found in a 20 year partnership of two men...Is the soul of climbing to be found in a magazine editor...What of the Madison Ave. Marketing dude...of a noob...the muscled and lean sport climbing machine...the aid dude...the alpinist...the sponsored climber...The seasoned guide...the ethical police...the New Route Machine dude...that aging gumby...the clerk in the climbing store...the gear manufacturer...the fumbling tradsters...And what of all us blabbermouths...It's ALL soul, whether you like that soul or not. Cheerio DMT Hear, Hear Man! You hit the nail on the head Dude! P

In reply to: It would be very easy to think that climbing had lost it's soul from reading these forums. I think what you have here is a group of people more addicted to posting and pontificating on the internet rather than actually climbing. cryalot is right. we're all frauds. shit, i don't even climb. i accidentally stumbled onto this forum while i was trying to google a supplier for crushed landscaping rock. oh well. dressed down and busted, guess i'll go home now. or, maybe crysabunch could just.... SHUT THE FUCK UP.

im a teenager and i love to climb and spend time in the mountains...admittedly i push myself through grades and would like to become very good at climbing..from bouldering to trad....i love it all i spent two weeks in j tree and those evening climbing the sun touched boulders were the best moments of my life...peeing off Walk on the WIld Side pinned against the rock was an amazing moment...repeatedly attempting Plannet X despite the fact i couldnt make it past the first move in the dust and heat of Joshua tree together have made the most powerfully engrained emotions of my life.... some may think i am one of the many teenage wanna be dirtbagger boulder ticking crankers that are taking the soul away from climbing... but that is REally not what its about for me... shire

Climbing is a moment I have to be quiet, listen, and be a part of something - not the master of it. I climb because I have been given a gift that I must use - I must explore that which was created ... and seek out He who created it. My passion to climb is because I so desperatly love be outside and explore the world... but not alone. It is also about listening to another person...even if it's just their struggle to the top of the rock. I climb to reclaim my name...the name that GOD gave me. It's not about my rating, my gear, or the places I've been. It's about my willingness to take care of what he created, and share it with another person He calls his child. I climb - I explore - I seek out the face of GOD, realizing that the condition of my soul is held in the heart I have to serve Him, and share that with my friends.

Through the layers of time, whole families of organisms have come about and passed away, but a few have persisted the vagaries of time to reveal the story of our world. Devonian corals tell us that a year was four hundred days long so many millions of years ago, but we have slowed a bit in our old age. But yet the 13-stripe ground squirrel is still especially fond of Penstemon flowers, and the Canada Jay, that most self-effacing member of the family, will fly to your hand for the promise of a peanut. Climbing is a mere vehicle that deepens our interchange with the natural world, if only through the heightened sensitivity of our bloody knuckles, the love of our friends, and the warmth of the setting sun upon our faces. So I guess the short answer is: It's not in the gym, that thief of souls, but in the mountains, and among friends. How it warms my heart to find that there are so many soulful climbers out there.

it is easy to get caught up in redpoint thinking when working something tough. I'm guilty. i just returned from the Sierra where i was able to enjoy all the outdoor things you mentioned. i loved it and always will. i forgive myself for stubornly working on projects for the joy of sending something harder than i have ever sent before and for a moment loosing sight of everything around me to focus even harder on the stone in front of me -quite un natural i admit. what the hell i love it all and feel compelled to confess in this very love filled emotional forum. I guess the shit all went down hill when the hippies stopped wearing flowers!$@ death and dismemberment to all who forget to love and appreciate everything around them()*#^@!! Jesus died for nothing -i suppose. don't go in there just beware and please don't feed the fucking bears!!!! wow-too early. will stop typing now. out

In reply to: We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - -the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

More people climbing, more competeive. Getting harder and harder to just go out and have your own experience and be proud of it, everbody wants to be a hero. Everybody wants their 15 minutes. If you wanna keep your soul stay away from the climbing scene. Its lame.

what an amazingly toxic site -this rockclimbing.com. so much negativity people talk'n shit people using these forums to talk about yanking pins of clasic routes and chopping bolts. people using threads as forum to pump selfrighteous spew. i have to say the only fun this is for me any more is to stur the shit pot and see how many curmudgeonly bastards float to the top. this is my honest confession. i am here to have a little fun  anyone want to go climbing? that's all i am really interested in.

if you want to find where the soul climbers are here is what you do. First start climbing with you soul in mind and with a certain mindfulness to to your climbing second, be open to what ever third, relax and we will come to you

I remember the good old days when the only reason that I would climb was to save a animal or a human from a certain death, or every once in a while to get good reception on the TV.
