I knew tgreene was gonna hijack this thread into a damn gun-control thread. (Gun control and abortion: two subjects where Americans lose all rational ability.) Argh. I am against most gun control. But it is NOT by any stretch of the imagination un-Constitutional to ban assault weapons. The 2nd Amendment grants the right to keep and bear arms (in association with a militia?). Unless you take the blinkered view that every US citizen has the right to a switchblade, a M16, a MOAB bomb, and F-16, and a 30 megaton nuke, we all agree that there is a line somewhere where the average Joe can no longer buy those arms. This is a disagreement over where to draw that line, a matter of Constitutional interpretation. No violation of the Constitution in sight. And it' 3-0 Kerry.

Pathetic. Very sad. A bunch of pictures of chicks with guns that accompany an ongoing "I'm constitutionally bound to own an arsenal" manifesto. I couldn't figure it out until all the half-naked women started showing up. From what I remember of Psych 101, it's called "over-compensating."

Why does Kerry say Idear instead of Idea ? Is it an East Coast pronunciation ?

They could totally ban weapons for what I care. I'll never understand this love of americans for guns. Dude you're not in the far west anymore. Wake up. And yeah Nobody need to have an AK 47. I agree.
In reply to: I agree w/ arrettinator, and I also felt that the crack geared towards CBS was a low blow that was entirely out of line. :? That said, Kerry made a flip~flop of insurmountable proportions tonight, and it's gonna cost him in a huge way! On the issue of gay marraige ( aside from dragging Cheney's daughter into it), he mentioned that he would never do anything to alter or violate the Constitution... not the 1st Amendment, nor the 5th Amendment. Later on, when asked about the sunsetting of the weapons ban ( a misnomer btw), he claimed that he is a hunter, but also stated emphatically that NOBODY needed to have an AK47 ( buzz word)... So while saying he supports the Constitution wholey as it is, and wouldn't change a thing, he later said he supported the raping of the 2nd Amendment and completey supports the weapons ban as enacted in 94! If you're a firearms owner, take note that Kerry has every intention of once again stripping away your rights that were just restored, after being unconstitutionally stripped away 10 years ago by the last democratic administration!!!! Also keep in mind, that Kerry is one of the leading supporters of the Feinstein bill on a Federal level. An identical version of this particular bill, has completely outlawed many weapons types in California, and is the most restrictive gun bill ever to be written.

In reply to: Why does Kerry say Idear instead of Idea ? Is it an East Coast pronunciation ? Yes, it is a regional dialect. The exact reasons why dialects develop are often complicated. Boston advanced more towards a British pronunciation, while the rest of American English stayed frozen in the 17th and 18th centuries. Hence the dropped 'r's and long 'a's. I don't know the explanation for that one, though.

In reply to: What's scarry as hell, is the 'possibility' that Kerry, Feinstein and Obama could all get together and write a bill that would effectively outlaw all privately owned firearms, and with Kerry as the pres, he could simply pen it into law w/o the opportunity to vote on it, via Executive Order. Far fetched and unlikely. I say again, you should be much more worried about the Bush neocons declaring martial law after the next terrorist attack.

Seriously, Tim, there is no way privately owned firearms will ever be banned. Never. I don't understand how anyone could ever believe that.

It is tin-foil hat, conspiracy-theory, the-dems-want-your-guns mumbo-jumbo. Would. Not. Happen. And Kerry wouldn't need Feinstein and Obama to write the 'bill' he would just need staff lawyers. Nice way to throw in some other "scary liberals" though.

Look at how the national sentiment concerning smoking has changed in the last 40 years, much of the change fueled by suspect data. Obviously, comparing smoking and gun control is apples and oranges, however, the kind of constant "squeaky wheel" efforts that have been applied against smoking are being applied to gun rights.

Sometimes I see a lot of similarities between the abortion rights and gun rights arguments. Both issues often involve the "slippery slope" theory, in that the pro abortion groups refuse to concede any ground, even in the case of partial birth abortions, and the hardcore gun rights groups refuse to concede any ground even in the case of assualt weapons. In essence I think both sides are most likely likely correct in their feelings. I think many democratic lawmakers would like to gradually chip away at gun rights, just as I am willing to admit that many republican lawmakers would like to gradually chip away at abortion rights.

To be really crazy, and talk about the outcome of the debates: Some Polls So Kerry won this one, in some of the polls by an even wider margin than the first. But Bush obviously did better this time. What was it Bush said to piss off people watching the debate? Also, a sitting President just went 0-3 against the challenger, and managed to look less presidential doing it. That seems unprecedented to me. Anyone remember Carter or Ford? I was but a wee child then. Americans don't like a looser. Bush's debate performance could be a real problem for him. (But maybe not -- in such a bifurcated electorate, it may not matter).
