if you were sold brakes that 99.87% of the time you used them worked then that would be BAD. That would mean that 1in a 1000 times they would fail would go zooming into the cars in front of you.

wouldn't it mean 13 in 1000 would fail?

No. 13 in 10,000 would fail. Or at least 1 in 1000 would fail.

But see my post edit, I am not claiming that 1 in 1000 cams will fail below load. I am just saying that this is the statistical result of the testing used by manufacturers. Since manufacturers use destructive testing they cannot test, huge sample groups or there will be none left for us

Well, in the midst of this CCH storm. I decided to go against the grain, shoot the bird to the mainstream logic, and ordered the alien's I have wanted since my trip to J-Tree at the end of the year. I know....their dangerous and an unknown....but, this is like when Jack in the Box was selling burgers with bad meat and got a bunch of people sick. I ate burgers there for the next month after they fixed the beef problem and they had the best beef in town. So I bet CCH will be locking down on quality control and produce bomber stuff and gather that which was defective. Never-the-less, my Aliens are coming and I am gonna climb on them straight out.

Long Live CCH!

Not to be negative but since you were... it really is sad if you think you are sound in elementary mathematics. The math that I learned in 5th grade says that 13/1000=.013 which corresponds to 1.3% using the whole (ammt you have/total)*100= the percentage of what you have to the total trick.. In this case, the op rounded off 1.3 out of 1000 to 1 out of a thousand. If you wanted to use the 13 number which you studiously extracted from the 1-.87 you would have to consider the highest number that you can represent with the number of digits you have, which is in this case 9999 (or 10k for easy math).. so yeah... 13 out of 10,000 or even 1 in a thousand..
But I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are an engineer looking to impart a 10x safety factor on publishable failure rates... maybe CCH is hiring.

I just spoke to CCH on the phone to try to determine if this "dimple" will definitively identify defective aliens. They said that they were finalizing their report, and would post it here within the next hour. This should clear up a lot of the questions and speculation currently bouncing around.

LOL... love playing the fool.... but seriously, the company from which my partner and I ordered, identified the upcoming recall, said that they would not ship any product that falls under it.

Hey! Anyone that doesn't trust their Aliens and wants to be rid of them, retirement that is. I will take them off you hands for a proper disposal. :)

Does there seem to be anything besides the dimple that the 11 have in common i.e. date stamp, color, etc ?

Joseph, you've already been thoroughly trounced for your statistics misinformation, but no one's called you on your use of the phrase "pounds of pressure."

Pounds is a unit of force, and psi (pounds per square inch) is a unit of pressure.

For the most part they were purchased from the same retailer (MEC Calgary, CAN) in sets of 2-3 of which all have the same number(s) stamped in each set:
ie: (2) purple both # 0305
etc.
Also.. the swaging was done in such manner that they are all slightly twisted in different direction, which I doubt effects their strenght in anyway. but the non-dimpled ones are constructed in a nice straight fasion.

One of my twelve aliens has the dimple. It's the butterscotch size, with "805" stamped on the trigger. It was purchased at Climb On in Squamish in August.

I have another alien with the "805" stamp, red yellow hybrid, that does not have the dimple.

All of my other aliens have stamps older than "805" (and are dimple-free).

I bought 8 new aliens last week, here's what I found:

Dimple: Orange Alien 11/05
Dimple: Black Alien 12/05
Dimple: Blue/Green Hybred 12/05

No Dimple: Blue 12/05
No Dimple: Blue/Blach Hybred 12/05
No Dimple: Green 12/05
No Dimple: Red 11/05

I bought these at Nomad Ventures.

i called mt.tools today to see what they are doing on their end - i have two hybrids i bought from them - one with the "DIMPLE OF DEATH" (lol) and they faxed over this letter from CCH:

"[CCH], 115 Lyon St. Laramie, WY 82072
Phone (307)721-9385 Fax (307) 721-9375

Since the report on Rock Climbing.com regarding a cable pullout on an orange Alien was posted, i have done extensive testing to determine if a problem does exist. I have found that there are faulty brazes on some cams. The cable eyes brazed by a contractor are marked with a small center punch dimple at the base of the round ball where the axle goes through the eye. Please return any Aliens with this mark to CCH for replacement. We apologize for this QA lapse and we are doing everything possible to correct the problem. Most units effected in this recall are 1.5, 2 and 2.5 but a smaller number of other sizes have also come from the contractor. CCH has always work[ed] hard to assure the absolute quality of every cam, so this revelation is very unfortunate.

Sincerely:
David Waggoner"

PLEASE GET THIS INFO TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS - POST IT IN GYMS, ETC.

Hopefully nobody gets hurt from all this

Props to the RC.com community!
