Man I can believe I'm adding to the spray of this thread. However just getting done with a clinic from Vera Schulte-Pelkum. I can see why some men are intimidated.

Men usually try to do a million pull ups and power their way up the routes, where as women usually do not rely on strength to make it up. They think and use their feet more so than men. This was very apparent to me in Vera's clinic. By the way Dr. Vera is not only an excellent climber but a great teacher and down right good person.

Wow, one of the great thread revivals of all time. Good job.

I miss climbing with my female 5.13 /14 red pointing partners. They rocked! And they still do, but I live far away and can't climb with them any more.
Ah, the good old days.

in my personal opinion, even in life, if a female is more dominating, successful, what have you, it's really inspiring. UNLESS, this person's acheivements threaten my general state of laziness.

that's when i feel intimidated. i'm rather comfy in my 'comfort zone'. but if prodded -- even unintentionally -- then i view the person differently, more as a supervisor/subordinate relationship, rather than a friend, or even girlfriend.

did that make sense?

I had never dated any girls that liked to climb. But about a month ago I just started dating a girl thats awesome at climbing. She is really strong and just looks good when she climbs. She is an all around great girl. The best thing about strong female climbers is they usually love to camp. There is nothing better than climbing, camping and hiking with the girls you love...good time...

Goddamn there are some gutless cowards on this board.

And I'm one of them.

(this thread, back from the dead)

Why am I a gutless coward?

A myriad of reasons, most of which are beyond the scope of this RFI.

But yes, let me be the first in 4 years and umpteen pages to admit that

Yes, I am intimidated by very strong female climbers.

Please, allow me to qualify.

I couldn't care less if a super strong woman walks by me and hikes the route free solo that I just aided. I would likely stand beneath her and gape in awe and not a little attraction.

That aspect of a strong woman climber is not intimidating to me, its an attraction (as most of the boys have pointed out).

Its the prospect of roping to a super strong woman I find intimidating.

Why? Fear of failure of course. Fear of not being able to pull the grade.

Hackles raised yet? STFU and let me continue!

I don't mean, fear of not being able to keep up or compete with a woman. NO!

Its a fear, in my case deep seated, of simply not being able to climb something difficult and being left in a position completely out of my control.

More hackles raised I predict. Comb those neck hairs down and chill out.

Again, its not about a subservient role to a female partner that produces this unease in me. I don't need to control those around me and am in fact not the sort to even try. Its not about being in charge or being the boss.

Its this deep seated fear I have, that my mouth will write a check my ass can't cash. To borrow a Bizkit.

Fear not ladies, I am equally intimidated by really strong male climbers, for the exact same reason. I fear they will misjudge my abilities and get me on something I can't handle. In terms of climbing control, I do NOT like to be in a position where I cannot control my own destiny.

Additionally, I feel it is not a good idea to always be the second to a mentor, or to always get drug up the hard pitches.

To put it in stark terms, I'd rather swing leads on Nutcracker with my punter friends than be drug by hook or by crook up Astroman, or what have you. If I don't believe I can hold my own and swing leads and contribute to the lead of the climb, then generally speaking I shy away from such adventures.

Honestly, the hardest grade routes I've ever managed, aside from single pitch sport routes, has been at the hands of a better climber, in a lot of cases MUCH better climbers. For some of these routes, I could not have done them on my own.

In my own mind, I have difficulty counting those routes a personal success. Oh sure, I may have enjoyed them, and I may mention some of them. But my internal bullshit guage doesn't count being drug up some route beyond my abilities as a tick on the old lipstick case.

I've had my ass handed to me in the past for writing these ideas. I'm interested in gut responses to what I have described.

As a benchmark, the first 5 or 6 walls I did were partnered with an equal. To me and my mindset, I earned those routes. So did my partner. We didn't hitch our wagon to a star, or pay our way up some climb. We did it the old fashioned way.

All that said, I still climb with my betters. But I am very selective about what I'll try and I don't mind saying at the start, sure, I'll do it but you're the woman (or man) on this project. Every time I tie in with Brutus of Wyde I feel compelled to say that. People who head up 11 inch overhanging cracks on FIRST ASCENTS, well... they have a special kind of madness. I don't have that.

So yeah, strong women climbers intimidate the hell out of me.

I'm guessing your "attraction" is slightly below the 7" average.

That ain't all... once ropes are involved nature takes over...

it is French for "a typo that will cause stupid Amerikans much confuzion because they lack the cognitive ability to understand the ephemeral and unstructured nature of communication in the information age and cling to meaningless rules for marginal satisfaction in thier otherwise drab lives..."

At least that is the best translation I can come up with.

Dingus-
I know what you mean about a comfort zone.
I also gravitate toward climbing with people who are my equals. Or who I can tell myself are my equals anyway.
On the one hand I tell myself that I'm hanging out with people at my level and not slowing anybody down, but deep down there's a smidgen of self-centered fear that I'll get my ass handed to me over a safety issue (or worse for just being an all around wuss).
I met a person recently who has climbed weekly with a climbing mentor for more than a year, and while I was envious of the experiences the person must have had, I couldn't picture myself in the same situation at all.
Count me among the gutless cowards onsighting well-traveled 5.6's!

Huh? Because he likes to do climbs where he's part of the adventure, rather than just being guided up shit that's over his head? I don't think you understood his post, Wes. If your understanding of the "adventurous spirit" of the sport is being coddled up stuff you could never do by your own blood, sweat, and tears - no thanks. I like climbing with stronger partners sometimes, but there's got to be a tradeoff.

Me and my mates have climbed with partners at a variety of levels. Male and female, we may be in awe but not intimidated; our abilities may be pushed, but we all love the challenge. Transient climbing associates who are intimidated by better climbers don't last long as partners, cuz the rest of us are climbing for the joy of being on rock and don't have time to devolve that side of our egos.

I think that both male and female climbers moving over rock offer the best viewing of the human body at its best - functional, coordinated, toned, balanced - athletes in the truest sense, and I don't say that just cuz I are one.

Intimidated? No way.
Impressed, motivated, awed? You bet.
