I like it when I hear people say the word "repelling."

Right up there with acrosst and irregardless.

It makes me feel disorientated.

:)

Or how about "Do you ever free climb?" Yeah, you don't see pitons clipped to my harness, do you?

My girlfriend works in a gear shop and she always comes home talking about the funny things that some people say.

Example, this middle-aged woman comes in asking about prussiks. my girlfriend says, 'ok, cool, so you're going climbing?' The woman replies, 'um, no.. i'm going prussiking'.. in a tone of voice like my girlfriend was an idiot and didn't know what she was talking about. People go prussiking for fun?? Jumars maybe, but prussiks, urgh!

Another example, happened to her workmate.. this woman asks 'so, um, those clippy-things.. would they hold 250kg?' Her workmate replies, 'yep, they're 25kN, dunno what that equates to in static-load, but its a lot... you want them for climbing?' the woman says, 'no, for s&m bondage.. i need something that will hold the weight of two men suspended in a harness!'

I've known people who'd just go rapelling. It was only at a 40'-45' crag too. Woo-hoo!

After showing a friend how to lead, and having lowered to the ground (indoors) i told him it was his turn.
He immediatyly stated he wasn't good enough to solo yet, and that he wanted to toprope it first.
Confused I said, that no, he wouldn't be soloing, he would be leading.
Then he asked it, "but how could the rope possibly catch you if its BELOW you???"
He had thought the draws were just to stop the rope tangling on the holds...

Heard in the beer store at the base of Devil's Tower;
"Why do people climb the Tower? To stand on top and hear the wind whistle through the holes int ehir head," 5 days in a row, from the same guy.

Next time I'm going to Hullet.

I don't get it. Who was the one who supposedly said the stupid thing, the bondage lady or the person who said, "...they're 25kN, dunno what that equates to in static-load."?

overheard while setting a top rope on a short finger crack at enchanted rock, texas:

"woa, those rocks look really smooth"
they then notice the rope on another climb
guy: "there's a rope on it, i guess you can climb it"
girl: "well, i guess its not that tall" (said as if height=dificulty)
girl: "you ever been rock climbing?"
guy with big cowboy hat: "yeah i been once, at texas rock gym"

i don't think they even noticed us standing on top of the boulder

Me and the wife were climbing and some rednecks were speed rapping when they tied both ends of the rope to the anchor and it twisted up and she almost decked (thank god the twist knotted the rope and stopped her from decking)

this was all the assclowns had to say

"you all are going to go up the rock instead of down? thats f'ing crazy screw that shit"

Oh yeah, this was a good one. My friend Trina is really tall and attractive, used to be a model, and is a pretty good climber. Everytime I climb with her she attracts lots of attention. While climbing in the gym one winter evening an older lady was taking her young son climbing for the first time and was getting an orientation of the gym by one of the staff members. The lady was clearly intimidated by everyone around her climbing and when the staff member told her that it would be alright, she'd look just like them before long, the lady pointed directly at Trina and said "can I look like her!?"
It was great, she ended up relaxing and having fun.

This story is rather frightening. You were encouraging someone to lead when they hadn't demonstrated even a basic understanding of the system? What made you think he was remotely ready?

I also don't quite get it. It sounds like the customer had a good idea what she wanted, and was asking pointed questions to make sure it would be appropriate. Clippy-thing is about as technical as I'd expect some folks to get.

My band members saw all my climbing gear and started to ask me about it. My drummer saw my draws and started to play with them. I was talking to the bassist, telling him what my ATC was for. My drummer has both his ears pierced and the holes are about a half inch wide. Me and the bassist look over and the drummer has clipped both his ears to a pull up bar I have in a door frame and cant get them off. We just looked at him and started laughing. By the end of it his ears where bleeding so bad that we didnt have band practice that day.

Anyone else got stories of friends doing dumb stuff with your gear?

I've heard this a few times myself, and since I've never been one to be afriad of a little fall...I'll usually just scream an obsenity at them and jump off.

usually scares them into shutting up

My mom and I took a trip out to Yosemite when i was in my early 20's. I was a non-climber back then.. infact, I don't think I even knew that climbing existed.

It wasn't until my first trip back to Yosemite as a climber 20 years later that I remembered that time when my mom and I were hiking up to a waterfall and saw climbers on the rock face far in the distance. I think we even saw a bivvy ledge or two cuz I remember we both couldn't understand what anyone would be doing on the rock like that, except for of course ........ cleaning it. Ha.. we were quite impressed for all the wrong reasons.

Here's a couple that haven't been posted:

At the office: "You rock climb?? Really..... what does that do to your nails?"

My youngest daughter, when I was breaking in my climbing shoes around the house, "no offense mom, but those shoes aren't very cute". Then from my older daughter, who hated everything to do with my climbing: "and they make your ankles look fat mom. seriously. i'm not kidding."

After slipping off at the very start of a climb.. "What happened??!!??"

My first multi-pitch climb was also my first time outdoors. To make it work, my boyfriend did just about everything but climb for me. When I would reach the belay, he'd ask for my daisy to clip me in. I couldn't understand why he always did that first, right away and with such urgency. And I couldn't ask.. nooooooo...that wasn't 'allowed'. The deal was I had to just follow his orders. It was soon apparent that the less I talked, the happier he was. So he clips me in, I feel like a dog being put outside on a leash, and I'm getting bored not talking. So i bark. Does he laugh? no. I bark louder. He smile? no. but I thought it was funny.. so I would just bark and bark (deeper and bigger) until I got my next instruction... or saw somebody. what an idiot I was. Ughghghg how embarrassing! If I was on a multi-pitch and my boyfriend started barking everytime I clipped him in geez, I'd be pissed and I think i'd smack him.

After walking into a gym:

"Do I have to practice on that little short one before I'm allowed to go up there?"

"So this soft floor is for when I fall from up there?" then points up 40 feet.
