I have a Mazda MX6 (small 2door) that I always use in place of a tent when out road tripping. What try of vehicles have you guys sleep in. What would you rate them for comfort on a scale of 1-10. Ten being the best. Also how many the people does it sleep. My 1990 MX6 I would give a 7 out of ten It sleeps 3 tightly 2 perfectly. Just fold down the back seat and sleep in the trunk.

Well... Mine will sleep 2 very comfortably, unfortunately a third would have to sleep under my rear strut bar if I folded the back seats down, and that would not be very comfortable. I'd give it a 5 for sleeping 2 snugly, but it deserves another 4-5 points for having 300+ horsepower, wouldn't you think

i'd give my xterra an 8 for sleeping two, very comfy. just throw the back seats down, and put down several pieces of that egg-crate stuff that i cut to fit the floor. i am even thinking about making screens for the rear windows so in the summer months i can have some air without the damn bugs chewing on me all night.

I just got a Land Rover Discovery. If you lay the front seats all the way back, you can sleep pretty well, also, someone can sleep on the rear bench seat. It's not the most comfortable, though. I give it a 6 out of 10. A.W.

Beckybadass! I have a Tacoma w/ a camper top, too. I leave 2 foam matresses in there at all times and then just put the 2" Thermarest on top of that when it's time to sleep. Rates about a 7 overall, wouldn't you say? Of course I use the tent and go way off in the woods when I camp with wild people like climbinganne!

Got a chartreuse 1975 VW Van (Westfalia w/ pop-top, stove, sink, fridge) - definite 10, have had many great road trips in that sucker. Also have a 1999 Subaru Legacy wagon, give that a 7. A good buddy of mine has a fairly new Tacoma with a topper. He does construction, and after scavenging a bunch of lumber off a worksite built a sweet setup for the back of his truck. There is a platform above the wheel wells that has his futon mattress. Below that and between the wheel wells he has three drawers that run the whole length of the bed. The center draw has all of his toys in it, the left and right drawers are covered with cutting board material and smaller drawers in them for cooking supplies, etc. He pulls these all the way out and props them up on braces, and has a sweet little cooking area to work in. Also has a propane tank stashed in the bed, which is connected to his coleman stove (recessed in one of the drawers) and lantern. Super slick, everyone that has seen it while we go camping goes ape sh*it. A definite 12 out of 10. [ This Message was edited by: holmeslovesguinness on 2003-01-16 14:38 ]

I have a 75 series Toyota Landcruiser 11 seat troop carrier 4wd. I call it the big white metal tent. It can sleep three comfortably in the back even while driving. On a roady I set up a tv video so the guys can watch climbing videos or play nintendo on the way to the crag. The bench seats along the back of this big van are ideal to lay down on during a long trip. I have two fuel tanks and I`m able to get about 1200k`s out of them so when we have a couple of drivers we just swap and sleep. Awesome climbing road trip truck. When we`ve got more people I tow a big covered trailer for all the luggage. ...Phil...

2WD nissan extra-cab PU 8 (if I had a shell- 9, just one step below the VW van) Sleeps 2 comfortably, 3 better be good friends. 29 MPG. comfortable cab for driving time. enough ground clearance not to worry on most dirt roads. tail gate makes a great kitchen table. dont have to worry about spills, scratches, dirt ... just hose it off. It sucks not to have 4WD + large ground clearance but it pays off in MPG and driveability.

1998 red Toyota 4runner and LORDY is it nice. Sleeps 2 OK, rates about 7 on the scale (I'm 6'2" so it's a bit tight...) It's new as of a few months ago (have put over 15,000 miles on it so far) and I love it more than life itself.

I drive a company truck. Ford F150 longbed 2wd with a shell. I'd give it a 9.5, be a 10 if it had 4wd. I've slept more nights in that truck than I can count. Two plus packs and gear is easy, three is not bad, four might be tight. You can practically stand up, and the side windows open to screens for ventilation whilst cooking or sleeping, there is even a dome light to supplement my headlamp. Basically, it's pretty bitchin'.

Currently, I have a Dodge Durango and with the seats in the back folded down, it sleeps two comfortably side by side, up to about 6'8" long. However, being a Dodge product, giving the vehicle an overall rating using Dodge's reliability and engineering, the score is lowered to -1,022. Camping rating alone, I'd give it an 8 or 9 due to the room for sleeping and storage space.

Little toyota truck with a shell. The shell has side by side back doors. a plus for diving in to grab something or sleep, a minus for sitting. 12V lights in the back 2 thermarests and a blue foam pad make for comfy sleeping. 100's of nights. I'd give it a 7. Maybe more if I didn't have so much crap jammed in there. I'd make the shell a little taller if I could change anything.

2000 Toyota 4Runner. Sleeps 2. Only sleeps 1 if you are more that 5'10 unless you bend a tiny bit. No room for gear in the back with 2 sleeping there. I give it an 8. '74 Ford Bronco. No room to sleep in the back unless the rear seat is removed. Then it's still not enough for 1 person. I'd rate it a 3 but I've never actually tried it. 99 Montero. If I take out the seat part of the back seats, and fold it down, it is just right for a twin mattress. But without the mattress, you can sleep 2 comfortably since we can curl around the wheel wells. I made a platform for it, but it just didn't work. I can fit 2 people's gear for a week of trad climbing on the front seat. Aid is a different story. I give it a 7 out of 10. A little too new to really dirtbag out sooo.... I am thinking of buying a old Toyota truck and dirtbagging it out with platform, curtains (to get some sleep without the Tool looking in) and a skylight/sunroof on top of the topper. Just need the finances. TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

96 chevy blazer 4 door. Fold down the rear seats and there's plenty of room for 2. If you wanted you can sleep in the front seats but the back is waay more comfy. I give it a 10. My vote has exluded buses and vans ect cause those would be an obvious 10. If I were to include them I would have to say 8.

I drive a Honda Civic sedan and it sucks to sleep in. with a thermarest and the rear seats folded down I'll give it a 4. I also slept in the uncovered bed of my buddies Dodge Dakota truck on a windy night when it went down to minus 9 and I had a minus 7C sleeping bag....I woke up covered in frost and I'd rate it at least a 5.....

2002 Ford Explorer, no third row of seats. 4X4. I sleep in it overnight sometimes in isolated areas. I'm 6'2" and fit nicely in the back on a foam pad. Made a pop-out screen with a piece of heavy gauge copper wire and nylon screen material. This is a great vehicle, and I give it an 8 for this kind of camping.

I think you guys are all rating a little high! Or else we need a sliding scale for the number of people. Anyways, my car 1994 Ford Taurus, 253,000 km, factory racks. Sleeps 3 with the back seats down: 8.5 Sleep 5 (3 in the back) 2 up front with the seats back: 8.5 / 5 BUT!! the back is carpeted, no need for additional padding. The back seats are just a little off flush so it gives you a little rise for a pillow. The guys in the front are in bad shape but their seats can go all the way back to get extra leg room without stealing room from the people in the back. Add 4 kayaks to the roof, the gear underneath and your sleeping soundly!! OR when travelling this beauty takes 2 boats on top, two inside AND allows 2 people in the front and 1 LAYING down in the back seat, with all the gear you need to move across the country with. I LOVE MY CAR!!!
