I was reading an article, an dit said that the average man can only do one pullup. Now I know a bunch of guys that I climb with that can do at least 20. Just wondering.

Yeah, the average man can do only one, but the average climber can do a lot more than that. All of my friends who climb (including myself) can each do at least 15 pull ups, but most of my non-climbing friends struggle to do more then three or four.

The average man they were referring to probably doesn't climb. Your friends that can do at least 20 are probbably climbers. Conclusion? Climbers aren't average. Pat yourself on the back, now you know you're not average.

In a row....3 to 5 depending on my weight and condition. When I was a kid in school and had to do the Presidential fitness test, I couldn't do the flexed arm hang (the girls varient of the pull up) for more than a couple of seconds, though.

One! Whoo hoo! Don't think that it makes a difference for us ladies...or men for that matter. Strength can only get you so far...technique now that's more important.

Are you talking about 1 arm or both? I can do 20 easy but some others I climb with can only do 5 and they still climb well.

What about with a weight belt. What's the most weight you can strap on and still do one pullup?

In a row, palms out on the bar, 30. At intervals doing hand-jam-pull ups in my hand jam contraption, 300 in 60 minutes. Intervals work wonders for endurance. Oh, and in reference to the other thread ' -"moderate" climbers - come out of the closet", I am a moderate climber.

Holy effing crapola! I can do 11!! Nice for a chick who could NEVER do one until three years ago. And that's 11 with two dogs trying to knock me off the bar. And that says nothing about climbing ability like RVega says: I still can't do anything fancy.

Its not called a pullup when your palms face your face. That is known as a chinup.

In reply to: Its not called a pullup when your palms face your face. That is known as a chinup. Hands wide, or hands close together? I know very few people other than climbers who can place their hands on the outer handholds on a pullup bar (approx 4-5feet apart) and do any pullups at all. I can do 10 or so.

I can almost do one. For my health class we had to do these behavior change contracts and we had to set mini-goals, well mine was do to 5 pull-ups, then 10, then eventually reach 15. I used the assisted weight machine in the gym, worked on a bar with a friend holding my legs, and was making steady progress. Then I stopped...well I recently started again...I am disappoiinted in myself for quitting, but I know soon enough I will be able to do 1! I can do one that is not very nice, meaning I struggle a bit and my legs flail around but it does count...doesn't it??

With a weight belt, I strapped on 60lbs and did 5. Have not really tried again since I started climbing.

A couple years ago I strapped 100lbs on me and did a pullup. Mind you, I weigh(ed) about 190lbs, but still, I wonder what the highest percentage of body weight people (climbers) can "pull-up"...

Anybody do pullups with just their middle and ring fingers? I've been doing them lately and I really like them. I can rattle off 6 but I'm getting better

anybody work on one handed pullups? I tried a little workout holding a jug at the top of a hangboard with one hand and a crimp on the bottom of the hangboard... its an old board so that distance is like a foot... It seemed to help a lot, but I still haven't done a clean one armed pullup..... its soooo hard to get your elbow past 90 degrees... and palms away my max is about 25 for both hands
