For an area with such an abundance of outdoor activities, I'm very surprised that Wilmington still does not have a gym. A former co-worker is planning on opening a gym in Jacksonville, but that won't be for a while down the road. And for what it's worth, while it is not available for public use, there is a small rock wall on base in Camp Lejeune, in the Courthouse Bay Gym. It's not the greatest in the world, but it's still very useful for training and building skills.

Liberty St is a downtown area that still has some very low rent. ( a possible necessity with our smaller population) This is one street over from Trade where sq ft rate is getting high. You might be able to find a downtown location with height near School of the Arts on Main/Marshall/First Sts. Not many buildings left down there and there has been a major effort to overhaul...rents are still low. Honestly, the city is ramping up to provide some incentives for development on Peters Ck Pkwy where there are a number of buildings sitting vacant. That would put it right between I40 and Bus40. The rent would be reasonable, too. To talk about the demise of the ROC would be a book. Leave it at, anyone with a mind to run the place like a business that welcomed climbers would be filling a hole for a hungry community.

I just don't see a gym being sucessfull in WS. Sure there probably is a growing climbing population (I moved out of the area about two years ago so I'm out of touch with it), but you have good climbing with in 30 minutes in almost any direction at any time of the year. Plus tumblebees with in 30 minutes that is a pretty decent gym. If I was an investor or making plans to open one up it wouldn't be there, it just doesn't seem smart. But if someone does it I hope they do have sucess and if I ever move back to the area (which I'd like to some day) they'd probably get my business. But not as much as if say I lived on the coast and was looking for a place to stay in shape for my occassional trip to the mountains.
