Thanks for the explaining Tim, and thanks to the OP for asking. I too have been frustrated with the delays, but can be more patient knowing what's driving this great site.

It's the off-site, third-party ads and images that have poor response time.

Nope, this isn't even about content this time...

For months now, on the occasion I do come here, this site has been HORRIBLE!!!! Taking minutes to load each page at times! This is true when accessing from multiple locations, different computers, etc. It's also true of each page on the site...

I have only been able to squeeze in 9,000+ posts between site f----ups. Imagine if the place ran properly. :D

Curt

That's crazy, Curt. How long have you been here?

I think it would take me about .....6 years to get that many!

Brent

It's right under his nick there. He's had just over three years to accumulate. ;)

A lot of times, when I post an explanation of why the site is slow or dead or hiccuped or whatever, it sounds like I am the only person in the engine room. That's completely false. There is a team of committed individuals who mold rockclimbing.com into what you see when you visit.

*) J_ung is responsible for keeping the content on the front page fresh -- all the gear reviews, all the articles, all the special offers and Access Issues. Basically everything that got the site out of its rut and got the servers overloaded again ;-)

*) Phil Box has been the voice of reason here for literally years. If I get some time to do it, I'll try and do justice to his and Doug Widdis' and Bob D'antonio's efforts by moving the routesdb to Drupal, which I think is probably the only software sophisticated enough to handle the complicated structure of a global routes database with local managers and regional coordinators. (Seriously. You would be surprised at the emails we get.) The nice thing about Phil and his team of moderators is that they're all over the globe, so whenever one person is going to bed, someone else is getting up. This site really does have a global audience, and the numbers show it.

*) Anson and Dan (cliffhanger9) have written a ton of code and fixed a lot of bugs -- for example, the front page redesign, the overhaul of the Photos section, the navigation menus, and most of the 'little things' that cause 80-90% of the bugs that get filed. I would have burned out long, long ago if it were not for them.

*) Daniel du Toit has taken the reins, and not a moment too soon! Lately I've been a ghost -- my shoulder is wrecked and grad school eats up most of my time. Objectively, I have contributed very little to the site, of late. It's unfortunate, but that's the way things are.

I probably do less for the site these days than any of the other people in management, less than many of the moderators and photo editors, too. I just have the misfortune of knowing more about its guts than anyone else. Please don't confuse my technical explanations with the real value of this site, which is provided by you (the users), and organized primarily by the people I listed above. This is not a one-man show, and if it were, I wouldn't be the one.

The community that has coalesced around the site is what gives it its value, and Daniel and Willem (the DropZone management team) recognize this better than anyone. That is why they have made it a priority to improve the user experience. Dropzone is FAST. It's not as shiny or as familiar as rc.com, but it is hella fast. That's the direction that rockclimbing.com is going to be move in the coming months. Your patience during the transition will be much appreciated, and (I hope) amply rewarded when we emerge from the process. Meanwhile, don't forget that this is a team effort, from the grass roots all the way to the top.

I use Firefox and Adblock to block these. Works like a charm.

Thanks Tim for shedding some light on things. We are indeed painfully aware of the performance issues, so we have made this a priority. Everyone should bear in mind though that moving rc.com to a new hosting environment is not a simple task that's done overnight, and there are some non-trivial costs involved. We're trying to work things out ASAP.

I'll also be posting a general message to the site (over the weekend) to give more information on the overall direction going forward. Since we've made the announcement a few weeks ago, we've had some time to learn how things work around here and get our ideas sorted out for the future. Stay tuned as we'd like to share more info with you and get your thoughts and feedback.

Daniel

Our infrastructure problems have been ongoing because the site has remained very popular in spite of them. I'm not thrilled about the situation either, but there does now appear to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Meanwhile, some of the best climbing photographers on the planet routinely submit shots (free) for the front page, John Long and Chris McNamara put up TR's, and the rambling wreck continues to putter along.

I'm not sure whether to be proud of this, or horrified...

You should be proud, no no, I mean you should be horrified. No wait, yeah, you should be proud. Definately proud.

If you want to influence the migration, take a look at Dropzone's forum software, and compile a list of differences between its functionality and ours. Then post up if there are any differences that you feel are showstoppers.

They have naked pics, we don't. Definately room for improvement there.

What gives? For example, right now it just took about 5 minutes, to login, go to the forums page and open up a page for a new post... All the while I was able to view other sites in a different browser window, which were loading fine. Sad! Really sad, man....

I'm sure this has been said, but why do you even log on if the site sucks so bad?

You should see the Site Managers forum. Nothing but homemade webcam porn. All of us... nekkid and touching ourselves in unnatural places. :P

I'm pretty sure, if you're touching yourself, it's in a natural place.
And therein, perhaps, lies the crux of this tired argument.

You need a better, newer PC. I just made a new thread in this section and it took about 5 seconds to load. ( yes I have cable ) No problems

Got nothing to do with his PC. I tried for about an hour yesterday to create a new thread - gave up and came back this morning. Worked fine today.

I know they're working on a migration plan, so I'm not griping at all, I'm just responding to tradrenn. In fact, it seems to me that the site hasn't been down as much lately as it used to be.

GO

It's good to know that is not always the computers foult.
I thought it might something to do with his/her PC cause my friend has an older model and that thing is so slow, you can have a nap before it opens the website or software.

And Yes this site is like 500 % better then it used to be like a year ago.
Whatever they are doing to it, it is making it better. ( my opinion )
