Leader trails the second line, clipped to his haul loop with a locker. When he finishes the pitch, he brings the rope up and stacks it.

If the trailer rope gets stuck somewhere for some reason, the second can free it on his way up. If the second was the one trailing the rope, someone's going to have to go back down to retrieve it (yuck).

I've recently transitioned to climbing on a set of half ropes when I'm planning to do a route that requires a two-rope rap. This is excellent, although I still use the old method on a bolted route, super-straight line, or a route with very sparse pro.

nawww. the second's job is to haul stuff. if theres a chance the trail line might snag then it gets butterflyed. i dont like having any more crap throwing me off balance [i'm assuming we're in the trad realm here] nor a belayer dicking around with the trail line when they should be payin attention to the task at hand. i'm doing the work, they can haul rope.

i do make sure that I AM the one who clips the trail line to my second's haul loop. too many crappy seconds i guess. obviously swinging leads then i get to play mutt. but thats fair----and that climbin.

can tell this is one of those 'everyone has a different prefference' type things?

let's fight!

n_e_e prett much nailed it.

I usually leave the spare cord in a BD Speed Bag, but really any pack the second can wear that the rope will fit in would be appropriate.

would it be possible to get somepictures of a 6mm line and 7mm line (whatever you use) in a stack with a familiar item next to it (e.g. biner) for size comparison?

I really want to pickup a smaller line for full length raps, and I'm really hanging up on the question of whether 6mm saves enough space/weight to merit the extra troubles.

crucial thanks

I don't have a picture (if I see this thread when I get back home, I'll try attaching some images).

But..., I have found a big difference between the 7mm and 6mm. 7mm feels like a rope. Skinny, but a rope. This goes for both carrying and rapping.

6mm feels like fat accessory chord. Both when it comes to carrying and rapping.

The 6mm I stuff into a sturdy, but small, bag and clip it to my harness.

The 7mm I usually butterfly coil and carry on my back.

60m 10.2mm? (orange), 75m 7mm (blue/white), 60m 6mm (red)

I'm not certain of the diameter of the orange rope but it is definitely on the plus side of 10 mm.

I agree with sspssp regarding buttefly coil of the 7mm versus bagging the 6mm. Also, for rap prep, I don't toss the 6mm; I stack it in the bag with a biner fixed to the bottom end and hang it from my harness during the rap.

You can get a quasi-volume/quasi-weight comparison by compairing the cross-sectional areas: pi*radius*radius. If you want volume then multiply by the length of the rope.

For documentation purposes, there is also a lengthy discussion in the below link about using a skinny in a double rope rap set-up:

double rope rappel alternatives?
