More info:
According to John Meyers of the CCC, so far the group has raised $50k in cash and has received loan pledges totalling around $100k. So, they still need $100k. The CCC is excepting cash donations via it's website (see link, above; donations are tax deductible) an loans. Meyer: "Loans are for periods of 1-3 years. We're paying interest, so this is an investment, not just a gift."

Sent them $50 this morning. I figure, that's almost nothing on the grand scheme of my climbing budget (stay local one more weekend and save the gas $$ or drink less coffee etc). I live in Seattle and may not get to NC and Laurel Knob for years (I will at some point though!) but it feels good to help out!
Think of it this way - If everyone gave $50 it would only take 2000 people! That's not really that many people if we all get in gear! Think of it as investing in a future climbing trip! To lose such a place (would you let Washington column be sold off?) would be a sad day for climbers everywhere - even if you don't do multi-pitch.

But seriously, $100k in 2 weeks!!!! :shock: I wish the CCC the best of luck. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know. Maybe pass some information to the finance department of my company? I don't know if cutting through the red tape would be done in 2 weeks or not. It took months to get a donation for the hurricane. I can certainly ask though.

Nothing like waiting till the last minute ...
But, as a former NC climber, I just sent them $600.
I don't have enough fingers and toes to figure out how many more people need to contribute to reach the goal :roll:
I have a funny Laurel Knob story. Back in 1986 when I lived in NC, my partner and I were "sneaking" in to climb there and my buddy got his truck stuck in the mud back behind that golf course/country club place and he had to find someone that worked there to tow him out. I guess we weren't too stealthy :-) We got to scope out some routes but he was so worried about getting his truck out of the mud that we never did climb anything. I haven't been back since but the pictures have me wanting to go back and climb legally.
Hopefully this contribution makes up for our prior treaspassing.

ANY MONEY IS MONEY IN THIS! 1200 feet of pristine granite. Up to 17 pitches of sheer beauty. It doesnt matter if you will or will not climb this in the near future, just to know that you CAN anytime you want is what to think about. We will finally have BIG wall on the east coast.

Whip, now you know I'm a workin man. Plus, I've been scrimpin and savin my pennies. $501 is a most excellent donation for a school boy, like yerself. Gneiss!
Ice trip was fan-freakin-tastic. We put a hurtin on all the WI3+ test pieces. :lol: And I scared the locals with that thin line (the first photo I posted to the CCC site). Things got scarier later. I'll have to fill you in.

I have no plans to get to the Knob to climb. Truthfully this is the first time I've heard of the place. I sent in my $50. Please send yours... even if you don't plan on getting there anytime soon.
I'm scraping by paying rent in Chicago and Phoenix. Some day years from now, with a little luck, I'll be high on a wall in NC thinking about the best $50 I ever spent.

Great Stuff on here! Cool thought to throw out to the CCC. I know I read somewhere that there were plans for a visitors Kiosk. Any chance you can incorporate a "thanks to the following" list on that kiosk? It would be fun down the road to be motivated A) to donate B) to go and visit to see what you helped to accomplish!

News Flash, the internet rumors are partially correct and partially wrong, same as always. Here is the unvarnished truth:
Plan A was to raise as much as possible by closing and get financing for the rest. We applied for funding through the Open Space Institute. They declined to participate and in doing so lost a chance to make a big splash in the southern appalachian region where they recently opened an office. Their loss.
Plan B was to partner with the local Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy. They are working hard on gathering land for the new Hickory Nut Gorge State Park (Rumbling Bald) and as such are stretched pretty thin financially. They do support our efforts however and recognize this as a monumentally important purchase. Their Board is meeting on Monday and we hope they will be able to help out to some extent. If they can, great, if they can't, we are still their friends and will continue to work with them on the Bald.
Plan C is to continue fund raising and seek bridge loans from individuals to get the closing done in February. The facts are that we have raised close to $50,000 in four months, mostly from grass roots donors. This is phenomenal! We continue to get donations on an almost daily basis. The Access Fund awarded us $10,000. Chaco, with sponsorship from Great Outdoor Provision Company recently granted us $2,300 which was what they had left in their enviro fund at the end of the year. Hopefully their fund will be replenished soon and we can reapply. We have qualified for grants from One Percent For The Planet. This could be huge. John Juraschek, former Executive Director for the Access Fund is helping us apply for grants through his industry contacts. Our fund raising committee is hard at work planning events and preparing grant proposals. The new issue of Climbing Magazine has a perfectly timed article on our efforts. The Outdoor Retailers Trade Show is in Salt Lake this month and you better believe the place will be buzzing about Laurel Knob. The eastern version of the show is next month in nearby Greenville, SC.
We have determined that Laurel Knob is one of the headwaters of the Federally designated Wild and Scenic Horsepasture River. I believe there are grants from the Clean Water Trust Fund we can and will apply for. LK has unique plant communities as listed in the State Natural Hertitage Inventory. These water, forest and biodiversity resources will interest other donors and grant organizations.
The bottom line is this: We can and will raise the funds necessary to complete the purchase of Laurel Knob. We are currently in need of BRIDGE FINANCING. If you, or anyone you know can help with a LOAN please contact me at 800 860 8732 or evenings at 864 472 5678 ASAP! If you wish to make a TAX DEDUCTIBLE donation please do so ASAP.
We currently have roughly $40k in the bank. We have a pledge for $10k more. We have loan offers from individuals in the amounts of $50k, $20k and 10k. This is roughly half of the total needed and is an awesome start. If you were thinking of helping out, the time is NOW! Thankyou to everyone who has been so generous to date. We won't let you down.
