Sorry, but I'll think I'll be far too busy cursing them for leaving be by myself in the Fontainebleau gay bar (hence: no action to keep me waiting)... you're by yourself, dude...

Okay, okay... picky! I added the dates

Heiko, you HAVE to come!!! Bring your friend, you know we can pick you up... or at least her

Daniel - extra sleeping bag is arranged for you, so no worries about it. Just bring lots of warm clothes!

...Anybody else need us to bring stuff? I know some folks are flying low-fare carriers and the weight limits suck so don't be shy, we have loads of gear!

So far we are bringing:
2 tents (in case we decide NOT to be wusses and sleep at Etap...unlikely)
3 stoves (see above)
3 sleeping bags (because Etap is cold anyway)
1-2 crashpads (Depending on what I get for Valentines Day... I'm actually voting crashpad over non-edible engagement ring. Sick.)

No need to bring an extra sleeping bag. I'm pretty much covered as long as I find a place in a tent. Warm clothes I got. What was appropriate for Berlin this winter should make it in Fonti too :D

How about spray paintig a nice diamond ring on the crash pad? The story about the edible one was soooo sweet...

Sorry guys... :(

I checked all options. The weekend would cost me at least €300, that's too much for two days and way more than I can spend right now anyway.

Don't worry about me, I'll be fine.

Driving from Trento is 10hrs... unreachable for a Sat/Sun weekend (probably wouldn't even drive 10hrs for a whole week!). Bleau just doesn't make a lot of sense for me, although I love it.

I know it's not the same without me , but this time I can't.

pff i drive around 7-8 to go to switzerland for the w-end, and it's not that bad at all, a good thermos of tea - a good road companion and you are all set...especially when you have to meet a crowd like that there...then you can always take a friday or a monday off by becoming very ill and making it a very long 3-day adventure  (last attempt at motivation).

Hey UASUN- do you know for sure yet if you are coming down? If so, question: can you drive? Paolo and I have 2 cars with maximum: 6 passengers. BUT with luggage, bouldering pads, tents, etc... it will be a tight fit. Any chance you can squeeze a few into your car? :D

Ashley, no sweat about the climbing. Wait until you see the hangover show: sweating, shaking, swearing, whining, scared little people that drop off of Fb1s like empty chalk-balls.

It's the usual thing... locations may chance, the hangover show stays. It's a tradition. We practice that in order to have an excuse for our miserable performance, and to feel better and stronger next time.

Awesome!!!! I will coincidently be there at the same time you all will! I'm heading in via train with a lady friend of mine on the 21st of February. Anyone have any beta for camping or where I can stay for a good price? I'm 17, so money is a little tight. I'm not sure if I should pack camping gear for the trip... I'm already bringin a small crashpad, so it might be tough. Does anyone have room in a Gite? I'd love to throw down some cash.

muclimb- Paolo and I are bringing 4 sleeping bags (that means 2 extra), so no worries either way. But UA- if you could still bring yours, that'd be great - it always ends up that extra gear is needed!

I think we can probably round up an extra tent - so far we've got 2:
1 tent = Paolo and I (only a 2-man)
1 tent = Tisar + Italian guy + technically one more space but it would be tight (and stinky)

Hmm... anyway, don't stress- we'll figure it out before the 24th. You just need to confirm if you're going straight to Fonti or coming to Brussels first (so we can find space in a car if you're coming to BXL).

Fish- there are loads of places to camp, but remember that it is technically illegal. A good spot IMHO is under the boulder that sits next to Halle Bop (famous problem, you'll find it in any guidebook) in the Cuisinère sector. It's dry and pretty out of the way for the night. Don't build a fire!!

 I somehow missed this......

I hope we can organize something like this at some mountainplace instead at some pieces of rocks later on

Ok, I suck at boulder but I think it is due to the following facts, I almost never do it, just in winter on plastic holds beeing completely boring anyway, I need mountains for motivation not small pieces of rock, I need a nice view not a forrest, I need altitude not hanging two centimeters form the ground and invent sitstarts to gain some climbing, should I continue?

Well thats why I can not motivate me to come...... However for some mountains I would come directly.

Well, Chris, as they say... don't knock it till you've tried it! Anyway, this gathering is more about meeting people, making friends, and having a good time doing what we love... moving over rock. :D That's good enough motivation for me! :D

yaeh, and following in that line, the kandersteg offer wasn't good enough for you either (i'm going anyway - found a girl partner for once, it should be fun  ), and i thought those mountains were high enough for once.

And you shouldn't get that much on bleau - it's a great and rather inspiring place, even if you get 10 cm off the ground. And those highballs and exits with whale or dolphin moves (depending on your style) will make your adrenaline run as badly as an avalanche following your skis, trust me! And then seeing those old bleusards 70 years old with a little 1cm thick carpet sending problems in front of a little crowd with pads and open mouths is an experience to have at least once. Not even mentioning the crowd you can meet in the gay bar etc. - GD does it much better then i.

Yes I am really sorry but now you also cut my head, I was already threated by this when wanting to cancel the other thing I had planned. Whatever one does it is never correct. :?

And those highballs and exits with whale or dolphin moves (depending on your style) will make your adrenaline run as badly as an avalanche following your skis, trust me! And then seeing those old bleusards 70 years old with a little 1cm thick carpet sending problems in front of a little crowd with pads and open mouths is an experience to have at least once. Not even mentioning the crowd you can meet in the gay bar etc. - GD does it much better then i.

Just some BIG words for trying to tell yourself that it is worth it, I will come back from my trip that weekend with some proof of alternatives....

In reply to:

   With Google I have found it:

The white whale moves as a king, i.e., one square in an arbitrary direction.

The grey whale moves straight forward as a rook, and diagonally backwards as a bishop. (So, it moves like a queen but only in three of the possible eight directions.)

The blue whale moves one square straight or diagonally forwards, or one square straight backwards. (So, it can move in four different directions.)

The dolphin moves one square straight forward. (As all other pieces in this game, dolphins take in the same way as they move, thus differing from the chess-pawns.) When a dolphin is on the last rank of the board at the opponents side, it may make one move as a bishop: after that, he moves again only one square forward, until he reaches again the last rank.

Finally, there is the extra piece, the killer whale, which comes into play after taking a porpoise of the opponent (see below). It has the combined moves of king and rook, i.e., it moves horizontally or vertically an arbitrary number of unobstructed squares like a rook, or one square diagonally.

another version - imagine a whale having to get to the top of a boulder, or rather over just a small step maybe 20cm high. Dolphin would do it with just a little bit more style...Not sure if those are my personal invention terms - i believe whale move is in use, maybe not dolphin (yet!)

We used to talk about whale move while climbing on the side of a bridge in the US, to get the final part you had to overcome a little roof like 40 cm over your head and get to the platform (road) on top afterwards, using knees, chin, hands and all other parts of your body...

Hi Everyone,

Well, we are exactly one week away from some arrivals in Belgium. :D I was thinking it would be a good idea for all of those who are definitely coming to send me an email with the following information:

1. Name, email address and GSM number (optional- in case of emergency or last-minute changes we can be in contact).

2. Any gear you need me to arrange (so I have a complete list)

3. Whether you are coming to BXL or going straight to Fonti. And, if you are coming to BXL, when you are arriving and where you are staying -so I can set up space at my place if necessary (+ give you directions or figure out how to pick you up)..

I'll send out a mass email then, with all of the arrivals, GSM's and email addresses so we can keep in touch on Friday. - Unless you don't want me to (just say so).

Sound good? I just want to make sure I don't leave anyone stranded in Brussels and we're not all wandering around Fonti on Friday night trying to figure out who is arriving where or when. :?

Cheers,
Taz

Hey, that sounds great! I will pm you with my GSM; just ring up on Saturday. I have some unfinished business in Cusinère, so I will most likely be in that area.

Bleau sounds... so... annoyingly Frenchy and snobby when put into an English sentence! ... sorry, but it's true!

J'espère qu'il fait beau à 'bleau... since I booked. As long as nobody referes to it as 'Fountain Blue' I'm fine

Map, I loooove French (even I hardly speak a word), so dare to loose the accent! Doesn't sound annoyingly (or snobby...) at all.

Taz, I'll summerize data again for you these days. Could you maybe provide me with a timetable for the trains I have to get from the airport? Oh, I'll be soooo lost in Brussels...

No no, Map - you will be fine to say it because you are FRENCH! :D It only sounds bad in an English sentence, especially with an American accent... if I try to say it, I will spit on all of you and you will never want to climb with me again!

... Though ( :tinfoilhat: between you and me) I think you now run the risk of a German francophile worshipping you if you say it too nicely! ... He is very cute though!

Hi Andre,
We are going in several groups, staying at various places. The consensus for climbing on Saturday seems to be cuisinère. If you send me a pm with your GSM, we can ring you Saturday morning and meet up.

All,
Paolo and I decided NOT to dare the elements, since there are so many of us, and camping arrangements will be a big hassle, plus lugging the extra tents, etc. So for 6 of us - Tisar, Paolo, myself, Map, Muclimber and the other Italian guy, we will book 2 rooms at the Etap in town. Should be about 15€ per night (maximum) each. Hope that's okay :?: , it will sure save a lot of gear space. If not, let me know right away. I'd still bring a sleeping bag though, as Etap doesn't have the most snuggly blankets in the world...

Ciao,
Taz

Huh? Wanna destroy the chance of bragging about a night in a stiff frozen sleeping bag in a dripping tent with icicles hanging from the poles? The only chance for me to play the hardman... gone! BOOHOOOO!

Okay, I might accept my fate.

 Maybe we can leave the windows open?

Two days to go... I'm soo looking forward to meet y'all!

Just a quick question: Chalk is prohibited in Bleau, isn't it? So there wouldn't be the need to discuss the white powder thingy in my luggage...

BTW, anybody who wants to show me around Brussels on Friday? I mean, I could explore it on my own, but to be honest, I'd make it to the next coffee shop and that's it...

Tis- no, chalk is not prohibited. Anyway, if you don't feel like bringing yours, we can point you to the climbing store while you're here. You really don't need to worry about finding your way around BXL. We have 2 (count 'em - TWO) metro lines and you can walk the whole city in like 3 hours.

That said... I'm sure Ashley and the Italian guy (I still don't know his name!) will be happy to join you for explorations of the... coffee shop :? Just remember... this isn't Amsterdam...

I thought it was all about that 'pof' thing. Anyway, I'll just dedust it (it's empty anyway) and get some in Bleau.

I don't worry to much about finding my way 'round but more about my motivation to do so  I'm just a lazy one when it comes to walking (I know you wouldn't have guessed  ).
Haven't seen an Amsterdam like coffee shop for years (and you'll find me seldomly behave like in one). I really thought about coffee exclusivly... :P

Sure it would be nice to stroll around the city with Ashley and the 'Italian without a name' (IWAN?!?).

Well, it looks like I may have to be a full-time spotter this weekend :(

My fingers are soooo trashed from a bouldering trip to the Peak District (welcome to the world of gritstone  ). So we'll see, but is does not look too good for me. Oh well, I guess that'll lave me with more time to take great shots of you guys checking out how much worst than usual these Bleau sloppers are when it rains!

What's that talk about rain all the time? *shakes head*

There'll be no rain :!: Even the forecast doesn't nearly imply such inconvenience as damp weather. It'll be dry as a triple sec Gin! Dry as English humour! Dry as... you get it.

Back in Berlin (which was the hardest and most exhausting part of all, I had to run through the whole airport with two packs on my back to catch the flight ,which was a matter of seconds).

There'are so many things spinning in my head, I wouldn't know where to begin... maybe with the fact that it's really hard to get back to German. At least three people (one in the tram, the lady at the bakery and my flatmate) gave me the looks 'cause I addressed to the in english. Need some sleep (german dreams preferred, if there're some, I wouldn't mind subtitles though). Claudio seemed to have the same problem, he was mutering some english words tonight while asleep...

Thanks to all of you! It was such an amazing weekend! I truely hope this is not meant to be annual, and I see y'all before that.

Gotta get some sleep now...

Daniel

It was a great weekend indeed (albeit a short one for me!). Thanks Taz for coordinating everything!

Bleau's great (not) weather got the best of me though, and I spent yesterday between my bed and the kitchen to get aspirin and hot tea :(

See you all soon!

Okay Heiko, just for you, the short version of the TR:

Pretty good friction (pretty good, as in "I don't know if I can dyno since there might be one hand frozen to the hold..." or "At least it doesn't feel like the foot is going to slip... wait a minute, I can't feel the foot at all  ") despite occasional rain and snowfall, hell of a company (girldrifter, paolo75, uasunflower, map and lots of other incredibly nice people), some really nice (and sometimes even hard) bouldering and a rather small amount of drinking.

Areas visited:
http://bleau.info/cul/
http://bleau.info/cuisiniere/

Some of the boulders we did (and I could find again):
http://bleau.info/cuisiniere/9949.html
http://bleau.info/cuisiniere/3217.html

Fish was a killer! Don't know what he did, but give him some time and he'll do Karma (he tried and was impressing, that guy is 17!!!!).

Long version to follow, I'm too lazy/sleepy.

hey, totally agreed, awesome w-end, great meeting the ameri-germano-franco-italian bunch, oh, and i forget the australians! Weather let us a bit down on saturday, but sunday was good (read cold)!

GD, thanks for organizing - the funniest part was the 6 of us in the peaugaut 206 on the way back - you should have seen Leoni on Max's lap, it was unforgettable!

Tisar, your climbing theories were good, especially with martini around.

Map, i still see that blood on your fingers - you are my hero for living through that and still climbing! Hope you enjoyed it just a little bit!

fish and his gf were impressive and inspiring. props to the young generation. Hope one day they will also see the mountains behind the boulders

I managed to trash my hands in cracks both days, so satisfaction was guaranteed.

conclusion - we should definitely do this again, and not in a year's time.

hey there

our group from leuven was a bit larger then expected so it was too complicated to join but i think i saw everybody at the trois pignons (or cul de chien) parking aroud noon on saturday. i recognised taz and her dog i think (he even tried to follow us when we left the parking). shoud have said something but i'm a bit shy  .i was the guy with the green TNF jacket en beige pants if you wanna know. we went to 91.1 there and later on to the cul the chien.
met uasunflower later that day (8pm?) in fontainebleau when we wanted to get some pizza but i didn't had the time to say more than just a "hi" (sorry for that  , see u in freyr soon).
sunday we went to a less know area called beauvais which was pretty cool too.
conditions where really good, maybe a bit wet on saturday morning but the temps were perfect. pretty good friction and the holds dried very fast.
anyway we had a great time and i really hope to meat you guys the next time i go.

Hi all!

Bart- I remember your group! You definitely should have said hello- my big mouth would have out-weighed your shyness in no time! :D

Okay, I have all of my pics up on my msn site (see my profile- the link is there). Unfortunately, I spent too much time shivering and hopping around to take many pictures. But if you guys send yours to me via email I'll put them up! 8^)

Map- I hope you feel better! And it was super of you to come even for one day. We're close enough on the map map... see you on some Belgian rock soon, if not on gritstone (though the blood may be a detterant...)

Julia- you are so hardcore- This woman took about 5 seconds slugging her coffee on Saturday while the rest of us were whinging about the rain- then it was all about getting us off our butts and out on the trails/rock/whatever. Please tell Renaud it was great to meet him!

Tisar- for somebody who has never bouldered before, you kicked ass! Seriously awesome that you were able to keep your cool and send those red problems!

Paolo- thanks for not wearing your pants, baby  And really, for being our very hot, smouldering taxi-man all weekend. Mmmmuah!

Ashley- thanks so much for helping Tisar and I to write "The Ultimate Apocalypse Mega Death Heavy Metal Song"... lyrics coming soon to this site

Fish, Tori- No words on that one - a serious inspiration! As UA said - props to the young generation!

Claudio- it was great to meet you! Now hurry up and get your rc.com account set-up so that we can teach you all sorts of English swear-words!

Max- I am so glad we finally got to hang out, at least a little bit! Paolo makes a killer carbonara, so you'll have to come sometime and finish the conversation about science magazines, shrinks, etc. We will see each other at Stone Age, no?

And definitely, we won't wait a year to do it again. But since it was a success this year, for the Annual gathering next year I'll start earlier and enlist some of you to help me arrange vendors and other exciting things... sound good :?: :!:

Brilliant! Maybe we should go for some date in a slightly warmer period. An international campfire + barbecue on Saturday should be inevitable (even it might be harder to get anything done on Sunday then).

Nonetheless I wanna meet y'all before my fleece runs out of dog's hair...

Sure! A nice help is the [Check] button at the right corner of the field you're writing in... Though it won't know special climbing terms like 'Jagermeister', 'Viva la figa' and all the other important words.

But a trip to Fonti would be nice with good weather, I think one could do some really nice pictures there of people climbing. Well if I join in at some later trip I will sure not forget my camera

I've to understand better your nickname-name.

...cracklover - Gabe, who spent a night in an emergency bivouac with Julia, hopefully around Europe sometimes

Oui, c'est moi! Definitely around Europe sometime. There's still a lot of the US to see, but... Verdon anyone?

Clod - great pics, thanks for sharing!

Hey Ashley!

Did you make it back in time? Did sound like an allmost impossible task to me :D (You can't believe what I had to go through to catch my flight last Monday...)

Don't forget to drop me a line if in Berlin! Just don't hurry, that bitchy weather tries to convince me it's still winter... snow, wind, cold... *brrr* Better wait for spring!

Hey Daniel! Yeah I got back at 7am in Lux this morning... I bet you had a fun flight back from Brussels with the snow... yuck! Lux has had the biggest snowfall in 50 years here... and of course back in the states it's the warmest winter in 150 years (70 degrees fahrenheit)...

I'll for sure drop you a line once i get settled in Germany! Can't wait til then!

Ashley

Wasn't that much of snow last Monday, was merely the fact that Brusselles' Metro starts too late to get the 6.45 flight from BRX International. Nonetheless I tried and allmost failed...

They were kind enough to delay the flight for about 5 min, take my backpack as 'special baggage', took care of my swiss knife :( , and let me board despite the sweat that was drippin' off me since I had to run through the whole airport full packed (that thing is huge!)... no way I'll ever wanna get those looks again from the other passengers...
