Lucky guy!

Those of you with the FRS (and other radios) that are worried about the belt clips, you can get chest harnesses or sturdier belt holsters that should fit on your harness. I've seen them at http://www.cabelas.com and http://www.searchgear.com. Search on "radio case" or "radio harness". Any place that sells gear for search and rescue or public safety (police, fire, etc) organizations probably has something that'll securely hold the radio. Of course, depending on the radio, it may cost more for the case/harness than the radio (until you have to replace two or three that have fallen and "exploded" on impact.

If you climb in places where you get a cell signal, try a nextel radio/phone. They have good phones that will be protected from high falls. My friend got pissed at his phone for ringing all the time and tossed it about 100 ft away. It probably went about 70 ft in the air. There wasn't even a scratch. I've dropped/thrown mine several times on rocks, concrete, and once on my belayer. Still works fine.

REI sells a decent hardcase for a small camera - your radio might fit in it. One of my friends carries his digital camera in it when we climb and it has lasted through some brutal abuse with no scratches.

That guy does have 2 years of rehab to go through, but he's also got about 200 years of free beer from his belayer, assuming the guy didn't kill himself out sheer embarassment for letting his leader deck.

The radio that you are looking for is the Uniden EcoTrek... It has a biner-like clip antenna and works nicely on a gear loop... and I found mine on sale for a mere $10 each!

Good Luck,

DJM

WOWWW

thats crazy.

we all should learn a lesson from this one - make SURE you know what your climbing partner is doing / saying - at all times!. otherwise you could end up in a mess.

its crazy that the man survived. he will have a bada** story to tell!!

i dont know when this thread was made, but whenver it was, i hope the guy is doing well...
