If you would like to see more substance, look to http://www.rockclimbing.com/...;;page=unread#unread. Why that initial thread may no longer provide any new content, it certainly is better than this one. More info can be found on most news websites, such as this:
http://www.cnn.com/...imbers.ap/index.html.

I'm not sure why the other thread got shut down either.

Anyways, I talked to a friend of mine who helped with the search and rescue yesterday. He said conditions up there are bad. Very high winds, rain, sleet, snow, and an increasing avalanche danger.

According to oregonlive.com it's not looking too good. The searchers say they may not be able to make the summit until Saturday.

Too bad this weather won't stop. It seems to be the only thing stopping this rescue from being successful. Best of luck to everyone involved, the SAR groups and the climbers.

The OP here posted the same report two days after I posted mine without even paying attention that another post was running on this topic, RENO accidently thought mine was posted after and just locked it. he said he was going to unlock mine and delete this but I guess he forgot, does not matter to me who post what but i think people should pay attention to other similar posting.

Anyway ,report I got today says that for the next 48 hours weather looks bad and ugly.

Interesting discussion ongoing on cascadeclimbers.com forum,

seems like posters are mostly remembering their manners

sending positive waves to the 3 and the volunteer rescuers...

Unmanned Drones and Terrorist Hunters? They are really pulling out all the stops for this one.

http://www.oregonlive.com/...78410.xml&coll=7

In reply to:
GOVERNMENT CAMP -- With another three or so feet of snow expected to blanket Mount Hood in the next couple of days, searchers may not be able to climb higher than the tree line to look for three climbers stranded since last week.

Fresh teams of searchers from Eugene Mountain Rescue and the Portland-based Nordic Ski Patrol will join the effort today, helping dozens of searchers exhausted from days of searching for the three climbers, said Pete Hughes, a Hood River County sheriff's deputy.

A team of fresh searchers will remain on call on the north and south sides of the mountain in case there's a break in the weather and they can attempt to reach the 11,240-foot summit. That's where Kelly James, one of the climbers, is holed up. Otherwise, searchers don't anticipate getting higher than 7,000 feet today.

Two companies will be joining the effort today, said Hughes, describing them as "terrorist hunters." Representatives of a North Carolina company called Iomax will arrive on the mountain today. Using electronic signals emitted from one of the climber's cell phones, the company can pinpoint the climber's location within a foot or two.

Another defense contractor is sending five unmanned drones to the search site. The drones have heat-seeking equipment that they can use to locate people in holes, Hughes said.

But even the most sophisticated equipment may not help in the search for James, Jerry "Nikko" Cooke and Brian Hall.

"Even if we knew within a couple of inches . . . we can't get there," Hughes said.

Frank James, Kelly James' brother and the spokesman for the families of all three climbers, said they are spending much of their time supporting one another and praying for a break in the weather.

And he also expressed optimism at the high-tech aid being brought in.

"We have renewed hope today," he said. "The assistance from these organizations is tremendous and it keeps our faith alive."

As always good luck and safe journeys for all involved.

HEAT-SEEKING ?

What kind of heat are you going to find under few feet of snow ?

sounds like some is sending their toys to get them tested on a real call.

Isn't snow a good insulator? I'm sure at -7C temperatures any fluctuation in heat would show up. They know approx where to look so maybe they're just looking for traces.

I dunno...I'm just a n00b

Someone on another forum told me that nobody's ever made it up the North Face. Is that true? I'd find it hard to believe, but I don't know much at all about mountaineering.

I don't think that is true. There may be lines on the North Face that folks haven't climbed but the chosen route for these 3 was a known route - just not usually climbed this time of year.

If they're dead, yeah, the infrared devices are not gonna find anything, but if dude's in the cave melting some snow, I'd think that his body temp, or the temp of the stove would contrast with the temp of the snow.

Because I screwed up.

I saw two threads on the same topic, and mistakenly thought that this one was the first thread on the topic, and that Majid's was the second. In the interest of preventing confusion and keeping all discussion on the situation in one place, I locked the other thread and posted a link to this thread as the last post.

I apologize for the mistake. If you wish to read the other thread, it can be found here:

Again, I'm sorry.

Sustained 90 MPH winds, gusts to 130.... They are not searching at the moment due to the conditions. The cell phone signal indicates that there may have been movement yesterday.

Weather isn't looking good for the weekend....hopefully the winds will let up enough to get the drones up there.

They are really going for this one. Positive vibes, positive vibes....

It looks like the latest plan is that they are going to set up two base camps around 7000 to wait out the weather. Things are bad here in town, I can't imagine what it's like at 11,000ft.

From what I understand about pinging the cell phone there was overlap between the two spots they got from the phone. That means that there could have been movement or the climber in the cave could be in the overlapping area.

Infrared can be used to map things that are underground, so I'm sure a few feet of snow is no problem.

I guess the question would be the sensitivity of the equipment mounted on the drones, how much heat the climbers are giving off, and what other heat sources would obscure the image.

I'd think that up there, in a snow storm, pretty much anything that gives enough heat to register on a drone's IR system would be worthy of investigation.

I don't know for certain, but I doubt there's many rabbits up that high, and it seems a stretch to think the drone is sensitive enough to pick them up anyway.

Nice to see the technology getting applied and all the stops getting pulled out. Let's hope this works out soon and that nobody else gets hurt during the rescue.

It looks like the searchers found another note from the climbers.

from oregonlive.com
In reply to:
Yesterday searchers found a note from the climbers in the log book at the
Tilly Jane warming hut, where the three men spent the night last Thursday
before starting their climb. The note read “12/7/06, Thanks for your hard
work on this great Shelter. We did not plan on staying, but the warmth of
the fire changed our minds. We climb as a group of 3 and we left a $20
bill. We will leave tomorrow for the north face! Wish us luck! Nikko, B
Hall, Krazy Kelly.”

Now I'm not a mountaineer (I wish) but it seems "different" that these guys left notes everywhere they went. They left one at the permit station, one in their car, and now one in the Tilly Jane warming hut. I wonder how much harder the search would be without those notes.

It also looks like Kelly's cell phone has been turned back on. According to the article on oregonlive.com there was a phone call attempted from his phone again but not completed. There was a text message sent to his phone telling him to call 911 but they said it hadn't been opened.

hey Zippy
I heard phone went on for a moment on monday morning ,that was the last time.

Are you sure this phone went back on again since monday ?

Reno
I used heat seeking and infrared on calls before but in summer and from short distance it does work but you can not be that far from the subject.

in winter, situation is different, first ,snow is an insulator and blocks heats and radio signal . If you are in a hole with 2-3 feet of fresh now all over you, sensing heat with a flying robot is going to be challenge .The only thing that helps sar is your UTM or Lat Long location, via GPS. you get these numbers, they will land that helicopter right on your head.

If you guys ever got stuck in situation like this, stop wasting your minutes calling home, just call 911 and give them UTM/LAT LONG # out of GPS (if you got one) or tell them where the hell you think you are and do not worry about them not understanding what the hell this #s are, 911 dispatch records all conversation and they could have the right person translating those numbers in to your last location on a topo map.
