In reply to: Affect Vs. Effect Affect and effect are two words that are commonly confused. "Affect" is usually a verb meaning "to influence". The drug did not affect the disease. "Effect" is usually a noun meaning "result". The drug has many adverse side effects. "Effect" can also be used as a verb meaning "to bring about". The present government effected many positive changes.

roshiaitareya wrote: You've been climbing for 4 months, but your first outdoor session was in Spring of 2004? That's correct. I did some scrambling and a little chimney work @ Vedauwoo while visiting a friend in WY. Nothing came of it right away, I was just having a good time scrabbling around, but the seed was planted. A couple of years later a coworker who happened to be an experienced climber offered to show me the local gym. I've been actively climbing ever since.

Effect = noun (I am studying the effects of rock climbing) Affect = verb (Rock climbing affects my brain) The post above mentions the use of "affect" as a noun, but this is rarely used. It is used in psychology as a synonym to "mood" or "emotion". Example: Bob has a blunt affect (flattened mood). Its a completely different word than the one that would apply to this thread, and not one that you are likely to hear in everyday conversation.

How long have you been climbing? 34-35 years When and where was your first time climbing? o Indoor? o Outdoor? 1972 Rocky Butte boulder area. What kinds of outdoor recreation did you participate in before climbing? Hiking, xc and downhill skiing, camping, water skiing, shooting etc. o After you started climbing? Same but less. Described your attitude toward the environment before climbing (1= not caring, littering and 10=tree hugging environmentalists): o After climbing: Before 9, after 7. (I blame age here.) Rank the importance of why you climb (1=most important) o Social 9 (bottom of the pile) o Physical challenge 3 o Mental challenge 3 o Opportunity to be outside 2 o Escape real world worries 2 o Physical fitness 2 o Other (please list) There is something deeply satisfing that I can't put into words What percentage of your time do you spend climbing? 2% o What about thinking about climbing/preparing for climbing/driving to a climbing destination/etc. 20% What percentage of your friends climb? 10% What sacrifices have you made for climbing? Not sure I understand the question, it costs money and time which I gladly give. Since that is not "sacrifices", than response is none yet, but I stand prepared. How much money do you think you have invested in climbing? None. Climbing is not an investment. You are planig on getting a financial return with an investment. Climbing is a money pit. I'm sure I've tossed in thousands into the money pit, not including gas to drive to Joshua Tree to get some winter rock for instance. Would you consider yourself addicted to climbing? Yes What changes have you seen in yourself since you started climbing? That are directly attributable to climbing and not aging 30 some odd years? When I compare myself to non-climbers my age, I am signifigantly, SIGNIFIGANTLY healthier. SIGNIFIGANTLY

A few months. Five or six. Indoor - a few months ago. Outdoor - never. I played paintball for eight years. After my first climb I started bouldering. Escape =1/2 Physical challenge = 1/2 Mental challenge = 3 Fitness = 4 12 hours per week. It used to be twenty per week but open climb hours were scaled back. None of my friends climb. I fell last semester on a bouldering problem and my heel missed the crash pad. Every now and then my right heel starts to hurt, especially while working. I guess that's a sacrifice. I have spent approximately $93 on climbing since I've started. $73 on a pair of shoes $10 for a carabiner $10 on an entry fee for a climbing comp I forgot to buy an ATC. I traded a paintball gun for every other piece of equipment I have. Yes, I would consider myself addicted to climbing. As for changes, I feel slightly more confident about myself. I also feel like a bear that has the strength of two bears.

climbhigh2005 wrote: I am doing research on the affects of rock climbing, so I would really appreciate it if you could copy and paste this and reply to the questions... Thanks so much! Rock Climbing Survey How long have you been climbing? 2 years When and where was your first time climbing? o Indoor? January 2005, Libertyville Sports Complex o Outdoor? Devil's Lake, probably May of 2005 What kinds of outdoor recreation did you participate in before climbing? Does Martial Arts count if some of it is done on beaches and places like that? Running. o After you started climbing? Some running. Hiking and camping. Does yoga count? Described your attitude toward the environment before climbing (1= not caring, littering and 10=tree hugging environmentalists): 5 o After climbing: 7 Rank the importance of why you climb (1=most important) o Social 6 o Physical challenge 3 o Mental challenge 2 o Opportunity to be outside 5 o Escape real world worries 1 o Physical fitness 4 o Other (please list) What percentage of your time do you spend climbing? 2 hours a day plus weekends ~ 20% o What about thinking about climbing/preparing for climbing/driving to a climbing destination/etc. 5% ? What percentage of your friends climb? ~25% What sacrifices have you made for climbing? -Left a girlfriend who was overly demanding and wanted me around too much for me to be able to climb much at all. -Have passed up sex for climbing -Taken a more flexible job to climb -Eat less food (junk food) -Give up going out for weeks on end in order to save money for trips/gear -Have passed up outings with non-climbing friends in order to climb. How much money do you think you have invested in climbing? In trips/gear etc.? All money having to do with getting to climb? $3000-4000. Much more in the future. Would you consider yourself addicted to climbing? I can stop whenever I want! I'm addicted to needing time by myself, using up all my extra energy. Climbing is just a great outlet for that. So, put me down as a yes. What changes have you seen in yourself since you started climbing? More positive, more assertive, more encouraging. The successful qualities in a climber are now what I look for in friends and lovers ie energy, some drive/goals, positive attitude, never gives up, encouraging, intelligent or thoughtful, a little crazy. I've gotten stronger (duh) I'm calmer in stressful situations. I'm more confident in making definitive decisions. I pay more attention to animals and nature. I'm more self-sufficient. I'm more fitness/health conscious about my body and food (although I haven't broken my beer, taco, or German food habits yet) I look at porn of the gear variety. Instead of looking at scenery while driving, I look for walls/rocks/buildings to "see if it'll go". This drives people nuts.

There's only one major affect of climbing that I know of, the high of exhaustion/satisfaction. Acrophiliac, I am.
