I do like to read everyones view points on this topic. I do think that everyone is reading the "education" thing incorrectly. Certain people(Pianomahnn)will soon learn how much well educated college students can talk, even in the wrong place. I have been subjected to people constantly cussing ever since I can remember. Infact, I think one of the first words I have put a sentence together with was "get out of my way a**hole" while playing with my Matchbox cars. I dont think that cussing shows a level of intelligence, but when used at the wrong time, maybe a lack there of. I think if we are cussing on a climb, it shows that the climb is getting the best of us. And inorder to turn that around, we need to relax our bodies and minds to conquer, which means no cussing. I spent an entire summer climbing with one of my now best friends, who is as church going as the man himself, and I almost stopped cussing completely. Unfortunatly, I have not been around his influence enough recently, so I have kind of gone back to my truckdriver ways. But I am working on it.

Tyraid knows what's up.

Don't give into the rock. Kick the rock in the balls and get up it.

I swear a lot, but not in front of certain people. I also have those darn italian genetics in me which means cursing comes naturally. Crazy italians.

Living smack dap in the Middle of Mormon Country also, and NOT being a practicing member, I agree with the Lady (Forgot the name) right in front of me. Swearing is not a religion thing that only effects a certain people. I have sworn on a fall or tough route, but it's mild and to myself. It offends me to hear others swear certain words, but not the quick "s---", or "D---". The funny thing is, I am around a lot of people climbing, and I have NEVER run into this problem. Every climber I have run across has been very curtious in the way they speak and the things they say.

I think our piano friend's argument isn't so much based upon intellect but the ability to aptly describe a situation. I think it's unfortunate that expletives have involved into nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.

I can understand when someone swears because a hold breaks. I have a friend who sounds like a Rage Against the Machine song when climbs -- he's intense, focused, and fun to watch. Althought I acknowledge he could use more descriptive words, I don't mind the swearing in that situation.

However, when people pepper profanity into every description or conversation you have to wonder why they choose to leave all that brain power latent.

Love the "purple monkey"...LOL
I was told by a great mentor, whom said to treat the rock, like the library...with respect.
I unforunatlly have a filthy mouth when I miss or fall, but, always the word "Sorry" comes directly behind the expletive. Doesn't negate what I do...I'm learning.

But, learning Purple Monkey tonight...You'll be famous now, my friend ("climberchk")
It's gonna spread worldwide...
If I hear it on the crag...I'll know their members here...

PIANO'S POINT OF SWEARING BEING RELATED TO INTELLIGENCE IS COMPLETELY ABSURD. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WROTE ABOUT SMART PEOPLE (MAYBE YOURSELVES) HAVING MOUTHS LIKE SAILORS, THANK YOU FOR YOU HAVE PROVED THE POINT. I WOULD SAY THAT PIANO'S STATEMENT IS A SCARY GENERALIZATION.

AND SPEAKING ABOUT CUSSES, YELLS, AND THE LIKE; IF ANYONE IF OFENDED BY CAPITALS LIKE THEY ARE ABOUT CUSSES, I APOLOGIZE. I AM AN ARCHITECT, WE ONLY USE CAPS, AND IT IS WHAT I'M USED TO.

CLIMB HARD, KEEP CUSSING BUT TRY TO KEEP IT DOWN. TRY GRUNTING. IT GETS TO THE HEART OF OUR PRIMAL INSTINCT LIKE CLIMBING

ya don't have to yell any who... thanks nikegirl. You should try it, not just because you don't want to swear, but because of the way it just seems to lighten the mood. Like if there's a supa tense moment on a supa hard move and ya peel off... instead of being all sad n' pissed off say "PURPLE MONKEY!!!" and you'll see what I mean.

Hey I live in Utah too. And I am a "Mormon". But I havent ever gotten mad at someone cussing it up at a boulder. I think that if you wanna swear than do it. I dont care its your life I try not to boulder with alot of people. I do swear so I am not the best of "mormons" so maybe I can show ya some places where no one goes so you can swear all ya like ok.

I come from a conservative family, and while I myself am not offended by cussing and ocasionally might cuss a little myself, I do think that rrradam has had about the only real point so far with his saying that it is an access issue. But I am just a bit curious of one thing: has anyone else noticed that it is only the people that get offended that have rights or deserve respect? shouldnt the smoker have just as much "right" to a smoking section as the non-smoker does to a non-smoking section? then why are most the air-ports in the country "smoke-free" and nearly all flights smoke free flights? shouldn't the regular punk-a$$ at the crags have just as much respect of his "right" to cuss as gramps gets the respect of not having his yungsters exposed to it? just a thought. and yes, Number7, I am far more offended by all caps then I am by cussing !

La Playa= the beach (where I spend most of my free time). Not to be confused with a movie by the same name made by a gay Italian actor. Had to clarify that!

Kr6er,

The same point you made can be brought back to cussing...

Why should people who cuss be allowed to pollute the air with the profanity (AKA killing the soul).

While I cuss like a son of a B****, it's a military thing I think, an accepted way of expressing yourself in my line of work, I can still draw the parallel. Think about it.

Mick
BTW, I do smoke, so maybe that's why I'm rather defensive on it. I can't smoke indoors (hate the smell of smoke, if you can believe that ), nor do I believe in it personally, but I support the right to do as long as there is an adequate, sectioned-off place for it.

about swearing when climbing... when i came home from basic training and MCT, i swore all the time. i thing every adjective in my vocabulary was a swear word. i guess it was just part of the life that i had become accustomed to over that year. but then i came home, and realized that i did not to swear all the time, so i started using other Marine Corps words like "stellar" and "outstanding". i started calling all my friends "recruits" for a while there! (yea, i'm kinda a weirdo) but anyway, when i get angry climbing, i tend to say the word "monkeys". actually thats pretty much my universal fill in for swearing. anything goes wrong, its "oh monkeys." it works pretty well.when i get really mad climbing, when i can't get the next move, or i'm just stuck in one spot for a while, i'll talk to the rocks. yell at em a little. they never seem to have anything to say, but it makes me feel better!

People are way too sensitive about language. Agreed, inceasant swearing is impolite and out of place at the crag, but words only carry the meaning you give to them. S*** used to be a common phrase, and still is in many places. It is not originally offensive at all. If I start using 'fudge' as a curse it becomes one and will one day be considered unexceptable. I'm not even remotely religious, but 'God damn it' is far more offensive than a nonsensical uttering such as f***.

I don't swear (well... rarely), but I don't like people who make cussin' out to be the world's greatest injustice. They're just words, if you're taking such great offense, then it's probably because you want to.

I don't think that swearing is great or constructive, but it's not as bad as some make it out to be.

I hear ya...

I talk to myself alot when climbing, "Please, legs, please stop shaking" and "Please stick, shoes, if never before or never after, please stick RIGHT NOW!!"

It gets some looks when I'm bouldering at the Garden, but who cares - most of them can see the dilema anyway and think it's funny.

okay, i was just thinking about this topic, and came up with possible hypothesis:
Swearing (whether climbing or doing anything else) is the nothing more than the acting out of a social taboo in order to relieve stress (follow me?).
It is a great weight off my chest when I let out with something that just might piss some other people off. If I know I have pissed people off, it triggers something in my mind that says "climb better; or you'll have to swear more, get more people angry, feel bad about yourself, and climb worse"
It is a vicious, downward cycle. Swearing breaks this cycle by kickstarting my climbing ability- asort of verbal adreneline.
People who do not swear in stressful situations are still THINKING these socially unacceptable words. Thus they do not relieve the stress within themselves properly, get it built up inside, and their climbing suffers. Hmmm.
I'll just consider my profanity to be future heart attack prevention.
Am I nucking futs?
