For Toronto Oasis is a far better gym than Rockheads or Rock and chalk. Gravity in Hamilton is pretty good too.

The Ben Lomond Climbing Center is a pretty cool place to climb. It's not the biggest or most flashy place (and Ogden isn't exactly a climbing mecca) but this gym has more than the average gym. Every gym seems to have a good boulder wall and caves but does every gym have a dozen different cracks to jam in addition to good lie-back problems and sharp aretes. This is one gym that caters to a variety of climbers. Its even got holds specifically designed for the novice ice climber/dry tooler. Cool, fun place to climb. By the way, BLCC is in UT. Just so you guys in Jersey can stop looking. [ This Message was edited by: youmeanupthere on 2002-12-13 22:56 ]

X-treme in Miami. It's the one I go to. Do people travel all over the country just to check out climbing gyms?

I've only been to the NYC climbing gyms (MPHC is the best here, cuz Chelsea is too expensive!) but I'll let you know when I visit some Houston climbing gyms in a few weeks!!

The one you climb in the most. You know the area, the people. It's a sort of winter-Utopia for some of us

There's a new Earth Treks gym in Timonium MD. It has a great bouldering section (it's huge) and a lot of routes, and the upstairs isn't even done yet. Check it out if you can.

There are a few in the Bay Area. I would venture to rate a gym by the course setters and the quality of routes.

For the SF Bay Area gyms, I think Planet Granite, Belmont is the best. It's nowhere near the biggest, but it's the most diverse with good cracks (the crack with the roof is the most fun indoor crack I've climbed), a fun chimney, a burly OW, in addition to artificial sportclimbing. If all you want is wildly overhung artificial sportclimbing (and that seem to be all some gym climbers want), then Touchstone, Concord is best I've seen anywhere. As far as diversity, I seem to remember that Club Sport in Tigard, OR even had a bombay chimney. Don't get to practice that stuff in most gyms.

I actualy like the old earthtreks in Columbia more than Timonium. Cloumbia is much more laid back, and the re are plenty of lead only walls. They've got a special upstairs climbing wall area where they corall all the litte kids and Boy Scout troops. Alos, the gym isdesigned like a canyon, so there is almost nofloor space. Altough this sounds lika a disadvantage, it is cool. Everything is total chaos nd makes for a great social scene.

Cliffhangers in Reading, Pa. is the top of my list. They have the "custom rock" and a giant boulder in the center. The owners there are totaly cool as are most of the people there. My winter home. Climb Happy, Mitch

I know what ISN'T the best gym, at least in the SF Bay Area: Mission Cliffs. For $65/mo., you get a (mostly) cocky, asshat "staff", routes that are geared mostly towards advanced climbers, crowds that mean waiting for a rope if you arrive after 6:30pm, and a WEAK cardio/weight room. For some reason, I'm still a member though. While I haven't been to ALL of the Bay Area gyms, I'll agree with David that PG Belmont is pretty sweet.
