eXisTanCe!!!

caN yOu FeeL it???

I OwN 9 AcRes oF Land 13 mInuTes from THE GUNKS

...
-have plenty of cushy places to put a tent

-a small tree house to fit 2 sleeping bags

-a large above ground pool

-a nice fire pit in a star-lit open field

-a pre-poured foundation waiting to become a chill spot

-swings, chickens, a dog, and a couple of awesome children!

Well... I want to open a campground and super chill place for climbers
to gather after a day of climbing the Gunks.

...

This is a call to anyone who wants to chill here and kick off the vibe by setting up your tent hear on the land as is...

---

I have set things up here so far with this dream in mind-
I have done run out of loot bringing it this far.

If there are any climbers out there who already have all the climbing
gear anyone can possibly need and still have a bit of cash left over ...

how about investing it in something as cool as this...

not much more is needed...

a simple bathroom, shower, and some sort of roof structure over the foundation...

and

eXistaCe

can begin to really happen!

Climbers are cheap bastards... good luck. I know I hate paying for camping.

Edited to add: If it will be pay camping... there better be food and showers.

The gunks have 2 well known and well used free camping areas.

then there is Miguels at the red which is like the gold standard of camping areas IMO.. $2 per night and amenities up the freaking wazoo

And yes.. grammar does matter when you are trying to advertise and sell your business. Why should someone invest in you when you can't write in a professional and coherent manner?

yea i don't get it at all.. CrazyCrazy One less customer and one that will tell folks not to go there either.

Sorry, you haven't sold me. You need something more than promises to attract people. You have to sell yourself a lot better if you want to attract people in an area that has decent free camping options already.

Sooooo you're trying to compete with 2 campgrounds which are much closer to the climbing, have basically the same facilities (minus the pool and chickens, I guess), and are free?

Sounds like your heart is in it, but you should really have something more to offer if your campground has even a remote chance of success.

All the best luck!

I never said I wouldn't go... I was just making suggestions as to what should be available. You already covered one of the items: showers.

Grammar and presentation are very important... let's say you were driving down the highway and were looking for a place to eat. You drive by two billboards, one says "Great food, low prices, we'll make anything you want!". The billboard has nice pleasing colors and has great overall aesthetics.

You pass by another billboard, the paper is falling down, it's faded, and you can barely make out the words "eats here, food good, no rats".

Those are the only two places in the area... which one would you go to?

I like the idea that you have and 13 minutes is not too far to travel. Do we have to deal with dog poop?

To the naysayers here: you know damn well that camping at both free places in the Gunks sucks ass, and fills up very quickly. Just the fact that this alleged new place would be able to fill up your nalgenes gives it a one up on the other "free" camping.

Amy,

I'm interested. Don't pay attention to Jake. HE goes to the Gunks, like twice a year. He's also cranky Angelic.

Other people have mentioned the two FREE camping areas, but frankly, both of them suck. They're free and close to the climbing, though, so I don't complain.

Now, if you are looking for investors, then I am not your person, but if a new camping area presented itself, I might stay there depending on the following:

1. Proximity. You already said it's 13 minutes away. Not bad. (THis wouldn't be what was formerly known as Tuthill town, is it?)

2. Price. Remember, you are competing against FREE campgrounds.

3. Quietness. I don't know about other climbers, but I want to get my sleep and be rested to climb the next day. Also, is it set back far enough from the road, that you are not hearing cars all night.

4. SHowers. You mentioned those, but I just want make clear that if I am going to pay, then there should be showers.

5. I like camping in fields and waking up and seeing all the stars, although trees do give a little more privacy. Is there an option for either?

If you get showers and potable water i'd pay a couple bucks to camp there. The free camping is alright for the price, but the proximity of the road, the overcrowding, the noise (when it's not my campsite making it), and the lack of amenities really suck.

Ok, I'm going to take this analogy further, since I'm a bit more familiar with the Red (even though I certainly don't think of Miguel's as the "gold standard.").

Miguel's is able to charge so cheaply for camping because a) he makes all his money selling pizza, and 2) the showers are not free. Even the wireless internet used to be pay, but I believe it just went free this year.

Lago Linda, another campground at the Red, has a concrete floored, covered common cooking area, with water spigots right there. You have the choice of camping under another covered area if it is really rainy, of camping in a huge grassy area, or of claiming your own site. Showers and internet are free. There are established quiet hours, and the trash/sanitation is managed very well. $5/night, and I have never heard anyone complain about this price.

If the campground at the Gunks was to offer things along these lines (a covered kitchen area and free showers would be most important, I believe), $5/night would be perfect, and I guarantee that plenty of folks would choose it over the Multiple Use Area (or MUA, as in what Axl Rose yells; "MUA! I wanna hear you scream!) or Camp Slime.

ok maybe if she would put together some sort of explanation that made fucking sense then it would be more appealing. but

DUDE Camp GUnKx 4 relz i need money stuff.. LOUD NOISES!! I LOve LamP?

see.. delivery.. it could be an awesome place but it comes off as something i wouldn't even want to go look at.

reminds me of when D-Acres at rumney kept spamming cars every day with fliers and i will never support them or recommend their place ever.

Neither would I, but that hardly applies here.

I personally love Camp Slime. In fact, that is where I always stay, due to the history, proximity, and my general laziness. If people get too loud there, mob rules tend to quiet them rather quickly.

I have never stayed at the MUA, nor will I. If I have to drive from the Gunks, then I want more than the MUA offers.

It sounds like the OP might have a nice alternative. I do agree that to entice climbers, many of the above listed ideas are key.

While I don't think points for style regarding posts are a deal-breaker, I do somewhat think that the more professional approach of proofreading and then hitting the "post reply" button would make the majority of the naysayers go away.

I don't see anything wrong with the grammar in her post... it was her sHiFt kEy that went haywire! Otherwise, every sentence is understandable, unless maybe you're a sport weenie used to translating the spray of urban climber... then I could see how you'd get confused.

Anyway, I'd pay a few bucks to camp there... Showers, water, and peace are worth it.

The MUA sucks bigtime. It is the biggest drag about the gunks. Way too crowded, loud, one filthy portapotty, no water, prone to theft, full of partying SUNY kids that don't even climb... etc.

Post up some info. I think you'll have people stopping in for a place to crash. I think you could get 5 bucks a head, or you could try the donation route just to get things started.

I have done run out of loot bringing it this far.

that's what i want to hear first about a business is that they are out of cash and sound like they quit school after 2nd grade. Having a single post about an idea on RC doesn't exactly make it a legit place yet. no prices, location, contact info, pictures.

So i guess my point is less grammatical and more organization and presentation.

I personally like Slime and have not had that many issues with MUA

I'd stay there as long as it's quiet and I don't have to set my tent up on top of somebody else. A shower and toilet would also be nice.

I would be interested depending on price and location.

There is a paid campsite called creek view. Never stayed there but I did hear good things about it.

http://www.creekviewcampsite.com/

MUA is nasty. Slime is decent, and I usually stayed there so I can get to climbing next day fast.

Out of curiosity, what is the situation with your neighbors? There have been other attempts at private climbers' campgrounds that were forced to cease by the surrounding landowners.

I haven't been to the Gunks since probably 1997. Are Camp Slime and the MUA still the only options there?! Seriously?! If so, hell yes, I'd stay at this new place. But isn't there an AAC ranch or some such?

Not yet, despite being talked about for the last 20 years (initially as an AMC project, then AAC).

It is, IMO, downright weird that such a storied and amazing place STILL has so few decent camping options. Surely, not every person in the hoard of climbers that descends upon the Gunks every weekend camps in Slime or the MUA. I'm sure some stay in friends' houses and yards. Where does that leave the rest of them?

And the reason for that (actually more like 10 years) and also the failure of the Gristmill and a half dozen other less known local proposals to materialise is the local zoning and permitting process. That is why this new one is so laughable - obvioisly she has no clue of history or whats involved.

I've never stayed at them, so I can't tell you what the names are, but there are campgrounds in the area. I know folks who would rather stay at a pay campground than at MUA or Slime, and they often do. I gather they are about 30min away from the crag.

So options are there, just not right there.

The Hostel is pretty nice digs (http://www.newpaltzhostel.com/index.html). Last I heard, though, it was up for sale.

Its actually mostly Gardner that is the culprit - but similar mentality I am sure.

All true. Unfortunately they are rather expensive for a camp site, particularly for climbers used to free. The Jellystone (iirc) Family Campground is on the order of $35 / night.

I know one guy who stays at a place where it is about $10 per person (or maybe it's per tent) that is about 35 min away. He likes having showers. I just jump in at Split Rock.

I could be totally wrong about that price though, but that's what I remember being told.

no, it's a place that Bill stays at; it's an actual campground. I'm pretty sure he's stayed at this place after the gristmist closed (which I'm aware of since a bunch of people I know who used to stay there all of a sudden started camping at Slime when it closed).

Some googling revealed http://www.creekviewcampsite.com/
which is $10/person/night and is in Rosendale. In the area, but not really convenient.

I'd be interestedj Amy. I'll give you a shout next time we are heading that way. My last couple trips to then gunks have been horrible sleeps at camp slime. Seems there has been an increase of late night a$$holes who are more interested in partying than climbing. If there is a quiet sleep and it's affordable I'm there.

Hope your place is able to make it!

Cheers

neighbors???

I have one neighbor within at least a mile radius.

Not including the 12 horses that live with her.

She's the coolest lady you'll ever meet!!!

She's totally excited about the idea.

I mean it when I say that this place is secluded!

BTW Creekview Campground is cool!

They are right in Rosendale, so for those who want to party the bar is

a hop, skip, and a jump away.

I just want to create a place that is exclusively for climbers.

All that is great. If you haven't already, you might want to investigate the history of camping at the Gristmill in Gardiner, and Gardiner in general. By neighbors, we don't always mean the immediately adjacent landowners.

And you say you have "... one neighbor within at least a mile radius..."? No others? So are you implying that her land completely surrounds yours? Are there really no others? You do realize that even an absentee landowner can make a complaint about what goes on in adjacent lands, yes?

Not trying to dissuade you, but some due diligence up front can avoid potentially costly hassles later.

That hostel blows.

I stayed there last summer and the owners screwed up our booking and didn't have enough beds for our party. He also over charged us by 30%. The owner was out of town and I had to argue with one of the long term visitors who was acting as a manager. The poor guy didn't even speak English. When i finally got the REAL manager on the phone he suggested I stay elsewhere.

But at that point, we didn't want to up and leave so we ended up biting the bullet and sharing beds.

Do NOT go to that hostel.

Maybe people would pay just to reserve a space. That way there is now worry about where you are going to be. Just drive in no hassle.

Oh yea, I hope everyone stays there. Good luck.

The free camping at the gunks is awful everyone please stay somewhere else. Thank you. (Maybe that will work)

I haven't been there in a few years, so things may have changed, but IME, that rule was only enforced for folks getting drunk and loud. If that's your scene, you're right, the Hostel definitely ain't the place for you. But I've had a couple beers, right out in the open, and had the manager be fine with it. I've heard some folks say that sharing your beer with the manager tends to smooth things over, which may also be true.

That bites. I haven't had that experience in the dozen or so times I've stayed there. If I had, I'd definitely feel the same as you. Again, the last time I was there was at least three years ago, so it may have run off the rails since last I was there. Dunno.

nope, not even a glass of wine - there are security cameras in the hallway. Manager was ok with beer or wine, but supposedly owners are not cool with that, so we had to hide our beer on the way from the fridge to the dining table - very denigrating experience for grown-up adults...

WOW!!!

Are you referring to Creg... the manager.

He's one of the sweetest coolest guys I ever met.

I stayed at the hostel for 2 weeks when I first moved here

and I can never imagine him not allowing alcohol... that idea

is hilarious to me!

It is under new management now,,, so I don't know what's up

with it any more...

but please please please don't diss on Creg...

that guy is nothing but good people!!!

nope, not even a glass of wine - there are security cameras in the hallway. Manager was ok with beer or wine, but supposedly owners are not cool with that, so we had to hide our beer on the way from the fridge to the dining table - very denigrating experience for grown-up adults...

Ugh. That's a drag.

GO

Is there any place to just take a shower after climbing? I'd pay. Not staying over but really want a shower before heading home. Thanks.

Cheers

I'm surprised by that really. folks at Slime seem to be pretty cognizant of the fact that there are posted quiet hours. in the rare occassions where I've had to ask people to be quiet (maybe twice per season?), they've always quieted down pretty quickly. I've never had a bad experience there, just a couple of short-lived annoyances.

I've heard it is an entirely different scene at MUA, though. I don't think there are posted quiet hours there.

Whenever I see the letters MUA, I think of Axl Rose in "Welcome to the Jungle,"

"MUA! I wanna watch you bleed!"

Amy,
Keep up the good work. All this ranting reminds me why I relocated to the Gunks...sure glad I get to leisurely go to the cliff whenever I want.

Now, about that mortgage...

And when is someone in that neighborhood below Cathedral Ledge going to invite climbers over?

+1

Best place to eat and clean up after a day of climbing.

Ditto. But I figured I'd let the OP in on the joke before he wasted a bunch of time searching for a place for showers that doesn't exist.

In retrospect, I realize I needn't have bothered, but whatever.

So I pm'd Amy a while ago to no avail. I was really interested in checking out this new campground.

I can never get any sleep at MUA or slime due to the road noise...so it would be nice to have an option of some nice secluded camp area.

I stayed at the KOA one weekend only because they had a buy one get one, and it was 60 bucks for the weekend... otherwise it's 60 bucks a *night*... crazy. The KOA is really nice and quiet though.

I stayed at creek view in Rosendale once... it's a pretty nice place and it's 10 bucks a night. It's got showers, a kitchen area to wash dishes, grassy camp areas (I don't like camping on dirt if i can avoid it), but it's close to 87 so you have the constant whirring of traffic off in the distance (which isn't nearly as bad as hearing trunks go by the Trapps at 3am.)

It would be nice if there was a third option...
*pokes Amy*
