Adk wrote: Well if someone starts a fire and are bouldering by themselves and their buddy taking a picture, it doesn't reflect on the entire climbing community... Here the fire is a direct reflection of the specific climbers. That is all. Now, if a dozen climbers were there that might have a different impact. That is a totally irresponsible and erroneous conclusion to draw. WE, as climbers, may realize that it may be a few lone assholes needlessly (and illegally) burning in the area, BUT that is not necessarily (or even likely) the conclusion that will be drawn by the public or park officials when they see that sort of thing. you could compare it to the videos released from a few animal facilities of atrocious treatment. Within the animal husbandry and veterinary communities it was known that these were outliers and that they should be shut down and penalized severely. however, there was ensuing public outcry and litigation that sent waves through the rest of the industry. the necessity of the industry to commerce luckily made it into an opportunity for progress, instead of solely being entirely crippling. unlike that industry, there is no legitimate reason (as perceived by the public) to have climbers around. i wouldn't doubt for a second that the ripples in a case like this could be access restriction or closure. sometimes, they're just looking for a reason (believe me, it happens around here). so, aside from personal responsibility for preservation of the environment, you've (as the collective to the climbing community) got to pull you head out of your ass enough to see the potential impacts in public and park perception.
