Don't toprope through the chains. Watch the rope so you don't get your leg tangled if you fall and fall upside down. Spot your partner before the first clip. If you are lowering your partner, and he/she is cleaning the route, walk right up to the wall, under the first bolt before they unclip the first draw. Tram on overhung or meandering routes. . . .etc. . . . etc. . . .

The most difficult thing for me was the backclipping and Z clipping. Also, make sure that the rope doesn't get behind your leg...that hurts...trust me, and climb with somebody you trust, it could mean the difference between a short fall, and a HUGE whipper!

Quote: The most difficult thing for me was the backclipping... The key to avoiding backclipping is learning to pick up the rope and clip in a standardized way. Always pick up the rope with the fingers underneath and the thumb on top. Then, depdending on which way the gate of the biner is facing, clip by using the standard pinch clip or thumb clip, and you will never back clip. Have an experienced climber show you these clipping methods, if you don't know them. Then, practice picking up the rope and clipping on the ground. Make sure you can do both types of clip with each hand with equal facility before your next lead. It only takes a few minutes of practice to learn to clip correctly, and you'll never have to fumble with a clip again. -Jay

Learn to fall. It makes it a lot easier to push the limits if you are not worried about what happens if you loose it.

Right on W6! Getting those first whippers out of the way is a great way to relieve the fear of falling.

JT, you are right on about the backclipping. It only took one outing of fumbling to realize that there had to be a better way. It was one of those "bonehead" moments, ya know. Problem is deffinatly corrected now.

Take courses and find a mentor, you owe it too yourself so you don't get injured or die. Also read as much material as you can from reputable sources.

this is more of a technique tip than all the other safety oriented ones, but oh well. start climbing on slabs, and learn to use your feet. I really wish I'd learned to do this. good luck

flennypek: I don't know how to say that in Spanish, but "spotting" means you 'catch' the climber when he falls. You don't really catch, but usually grab the climber under the arms to keep them on their feet when they land on the ground, so they do not land on their back, on their head, etc. Or you 'guide' the fall so they don't land on a boulder or something. The belayer should spot the leader until he clips the first bolt. Hope that helps!!!
