The end of an era?
Can't Post

Those of us who've been around the block a few times know that forums have a life span, and that the life of a message board/forum always seems to follow a similar trajectory.

The penultimate stage is massive numbers of the users who provide relevant content of the forum fleeing, with fewer new users joining. There are a few friends who continue to use the board as a chat space. Occasional clueless new users wander in searching for the same old shit that everyone's asked about a million times before - and are sent packing with a quick boot to the ass.

The final stage is a strange state; they do not die, but are overwhelmed by spam and conspiracy theorists, with few to no real users left. Nearly all the last few people posting to each other jump en-masse to a new forum. This terminal stage can continue a sort of pseudo-life more or less in perpetuity, or until the web changes state enough that the forum software no longer functions.

It is my opinion that the spammers/conspiracy theorists are somehow drawn to these fora in their late stages, much like circling vultures to the man crawling in the desert, or certain infectious diseases\bugs to the weakened and dying person. If so, rc.com may be only a few years (or less?) from the last stages.

I have a few issues with your post, cracklover. Maybe it's just because I'm part of the flood of new users that draw with them the spammers and conspiracy theorists, or maybe it's because your post sounds super elitist.

Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, and deserve the aforementioned boot to the ass.

If the final stage of this or any other forum is the mindless spamming and lack of "real" users, I would blame the veterans and mods/admins more so than the newbies. Both for abandoning ship, and for not taking care of the problems effectively.

I won't disagree that with more users, and higher visibility comes the dregs of the internet. It happens to anything good on the internet, and with the sudden rise in popularity of rock climbing it's bound to happen here.

I personally feel like the larger the community, the better chance you have for good content. You just have to take the bad with the good.

If posters with relevant content flee it is because they have grown tired of the ridiculous spray the elitists give the so-called "noobs."
A forum is a meeting place for people to discuss like interests and answer questions with helpful insight. When someone asks a "noob" question, it is YOU that defines the person as a noob, thus creating the endless webs of arguments that tangle below an innocent question. THAT is what gets old. In no way are you required to reply to a noob question. If you post with a "boot" than you are the reason the forum gets empty of relevance and filled with ignorance, spammers and theorists, because you don't provide the knowledge you have gained as a noob on the forum that you received by your elitists. So, continue to bash the noobs with the boot, driving them away. Continue to fill the threads with endless pages of "you noob," driving the helpful content away and then come back with another thread about how all all you have left to talk to is online robots and its the end of RC days.

Good lord. You two nOObs sure are sensitive. Did you even read his post??

He is not blaming ya'll for the decline of the site. If anything, he is saying that nOObs are the principle victims of the current state of affairs here on RC.com.

Thank you.

Have to give them some slack - all those boots to the ass must make them a little butthurt. But kudos to both of them for sticking around despite the "Locals Only" vibe.

I feel like one of the reasons this place flourished early on is because it was a blank slate. Members had an opportunity to create content where none existed before. The archive has been built though and RC.com missed the shift away from simple shit talking in the forums and towards media driven content. News, video and interactive features (ascent logs, route databases, etc...)

Now it's just a relic. A reminder of what "online forum" used to mean.

Missed the boat is certainly one way of putting it. In many cases, it seemed like the boat started to set sail, and then blew up and sank. Latest examples being the gear reviews and the tech forum.

I'd say rc.com jumped the shark when it was bought out and the new giant ants took the helm. And, I for one welcome our new insect overlords.

I really think most of the posts on this are right on. The giant ants have assumed control to the detriment of the fun. All the ants want your money and to control where you look and what you see, so they are all Wonderful Fine Fellows. Until they decide you are against their collection plates, or you are kinda anti consumer. That leaves the forums, that were designed to bring round the rubes looking lonely as those with creativity begin to refuse to play for insults and for free at that, with the work they do produce being stolen by everyone, especially the website developers. You put a great picture on the internet? Expect to see it on the cover of some t-shirt selling somebodies book. You do anything, show anything good, your product is taken and reproduced, then your face is put on the butt of some jackass by the best friends of the site owners...

If you post enough that you are not anonymous any longer, your reputation is attacked, your skills denigrated and your most cherished beliefs are ridiculed, then somebody tells everybody you are incompetant in your profession and attracted to children inappropriately.

Its about control of your heads and entry into your pocket. Its also about the power tripping that happens when people who have made limited contribution to the greater world begin to think they can get accolades and glamour from the less important stuff they managed while avoiding work, study and civil society. They will kill to protect their limited image of their limited achievements.

Dirtbags and climbing antiheroes are good romantic historical
fodder for the local forum digestion, but don't hang out and expect much of a real voice. They mostly want consumers to charge, syncopants to party with and whorshipers when possible.

And God forbid if you have solid principles beyond the liberal ideals of "do what you want to public land when its convienent and nobodies looking". Gotta support that bolting fetish!

Everybody gets a drill, new routes are good for the guidebook authors and the mag publishers. Let every route be published!

You really shouldn't post drunk Rob. If i am the one with no life why did you respond to ancient thread? Only to stir up some drama. To create a social reaction that you otherwise are lacking. Enjpy that raw right hand, you'll be using it until you grow up.

Yeah, I've been looking at old threads to bring back. Some funny stuff went down that brought out the red mods. Also, some somber things. I hate to say, I'm responsible for html and some other things to be disabled. Especially when I had set a link in my signature that automatically killfiled someone in particular when clicked. I got a slap on the wrist for that one, among others. Usually they'd just say, "that was funny as hell, but don't do it anymore" or they just fixed the holes in their code. Never got banned once. Exploiting the fact that they hadn't set the thread titles column to a fixed width was a good one, too. That one blew up the campground and butthurt a lot of users. Ahhh, memories.

One additional thing that is going on is Facebook. With the comments you can create threads just like here that a lot of friends of friends can see and contribute to. Marge, it might make you smile that Dr. Kodos is still riling people up over there, albeit with a different persona.
