Also, it happened again. Crags keep setting themselves on fire when I'm around.

There's a medium sized forest fire that started below Endless Wall, and yesterday afternoon jumped up a choss gully to the forest above the cliffline. Way hazy here, and the forecasted rain has not yet dumped a bunch today, hope it will. Mikey wrote a pretty good post on it here: http://mikesironcladbeta.blogspot.com/...s-wall-wildfire.html

In the department of selfish absorbation, I did my first evar mock lead of the Argh death route on Saturday, and sent it twice, second time pretty easily. Decided that tomorrow would be perfect for the lead– 0% rain and high of 60. But now that whole section is closed, and I think that the TR anchor that I accidentally left there is torched, too. Dumb dumb dumb.

Oh, and yeah, Lena, Chocolate Factory sounds like a shitshow! Fuck that place!

I am surprised that there are fires in both KY and WV in spring... I thought we had plenty of precipitation!

Hope it burns out soon without major damage.

There was a bit of excitement on Saturday night at the Red, Muir Valley neighbors were burning brush, and the fire escaped for a bit, so they called for volunteers to help. But we ended up just standing around for a while, the first got contained by bulldozing a clear zone around it, and we went to bed.

There are also two (?) small fires burning in Daniel Boone's at the Red, some hiking trails are closed. I didn't hear about it until I stopped at the Shell station and saw the posted notice there.

Started talking to the group next to us, who were also a group of three and seemed much more switched on, so I bailed and climbed with them instead. They were all from Toronto and we knew many of the same people. We ended up at Sweet Pain wall, which was a lot of fun. Didn't get much climbing in because I needed to get back to Pahrump fairly early, but it was good to get a bit more time on the rock.

Swete Pain over Black Corridor is an easy choice.

Well, you guys have Monday, as well as Friday off for Easter, so I can see the appeal of the long weekend. And also, the weather was perfect (e.i. way too hot to climb in the sun), I think that played a role in how big the crowds were.

No, we only get Friday, except in a few cases (college kids maybe?). It's just every year that's what people here do. The RRG is some sort of holy spot for the climbers around here, and Easter is their annual pilgrimage.

Continuing the Australia report:

We stayed the night on the Tasman Peninsula after climbing teh Moai, and the original plan was to head out to Cape Raoul to climb teh Weeding Cake and try to get to one or two of the pillars past the cake.

Various factors (weather, people not wanting to get up at 5, drive for 45 minutes and do the 4-hour round trip hike, etc.) led to a change of plans. Slept in a bit, went to check out the Remarkable Cave, then Port Arthur (a historical convict site). Here's the ocean near Remarkable Cave (the waves were pretty large, my phone has some decent shots of them), you can see Cape Raoul in the very back of the photo ...

The cave is kind of cool, a pretty narrow passage into which the ocean occasionally enters. Me walking into the cave:

Apparently surfers have actually ridden waves through here, though it doesn't seem all that recommended.

After that, went to Port Arthur, learned some historeez and whatnot. Stopped on the way back to check out the Dog Line, a line of chained dogs that guarded the escape from the Tasman Peninsula during the convict years. It's a narrow land passage, so they used ~10 dogs across the isthmus to alert soldiers if someone was coming through. Even had a couple dogs stationed on platforms in the bay. Pretty fucked up, but not nearly the most fucked up thing going on over there at the time.

Stopped at the Oyster Farm near Hobart to grab a bunch of tasty oysters.

Columbus Day/ Canadian Thanksgiving is pretty high on the list, too. Why do you think they hold Rocktoberfest during that weekend, always? is IS because of Canadians (and I am not joking. Apparently Canadians are disproportionately generous with donations to RRGCC)

Yes, I lucked out on that one. Otherwise I would have been stringing up TRs for others in the Black Corridor all afternoon.

While this is tru, the crowds on Easter weekend will make anyone crazy.

It's because people are finally getting out of the gym and heading outside. The cliffs around here will be crazy for the first month too. But by mid july most of them have blown their load, it's just getting through that spring period.

Ian also hangs out on Ontario Climbing (he's from Ontario originally I guess) and periodically asks us to donate money for hardware. While I'm free with my monies during Rocktoberfest, we already spend a bunch of money on local anchor replacement.

I hope the quiet in the Gerkyland means that everyone went out climbing.

Busy weekend here that involved very little climbing. Well, I set a new route at the gym on Fri, and did a hangboard workout on Sunday. That's about it.

It was nice to have Ed as my hangboard partner, but on Tuesday he is getting knee surgery, so he will be out of commission for a bit. For some reason he doesn't want to land on his newly-surgered leg. OR his just-sort-of-healed ankle on the other leg. Weird!!!!

Heffe is back in the country of red-blue-and-white, full of stories about Egypt, tons of desert pictures, and with a really bad case of jetlag.

Weekend report completed.

so I did a trail race on Saturday in the rain. I realized that while I have gotten faster this year and have gotten better at hills I'm still pretty slow and still suck at hills.

I didn't run at a terrible pace, but I on a not as hill road race I would have been hoping for a minute faster per km.

Decided I didn't want to climb in the cold yesterday, so we did a pile of required year work instead and I climbed on the home wall for a couple of hours in the evening. While I did get a hint that my endurence sucked while I was in Red Rock, the home wall session last night confirmed it.

Hopefully I can get a could of arcing sessions in this week at the old quarry in town, but it's supossed to rain all week. :(

Pretty fucked up, but not nearly the most fucked up thing going on over there at the time.

Stopped at the Oyster Farm near Hobart to grab a bunch of tasty oysters.

Cool. I went to the remarkable cave and Port Arthur with my family, early 90s I think. Good stuff.

Did you try zurfing teh remarkable cave?

I did knott.

I do remember enjoying the Aussie way of naming things:

Remarkable cave. It was indeed remarkable
Tasty Cheese. This was some variety of cheese that was indeed, tasty.

makes sense!

Red-blue-and-white....is he in Russia now?
With the way Putin is acting, we could all be in Russia soon!

Skied Friday and Saturday morning, and on Saturday my friend triggered a small wet slide. Fun!

Drunkenly told a five year old at a party/baby shower friday that he was annoying the shit out of me, and for him to go away.

Saturday night went to another party, and got a number and second date from a friend's roommate--due to the drunken belligerence of one of my friends, who put down nearly a fifth of whiskey. Who says violence doesn't solve anything?

We got four inches of snow last night.

Weakend report! Saturdays and Sundays are not weakends for me, really. They're fricking busy. Saturdays and Sundays usually mean get up at 6am, do office paperwork while I drink mah kawfeez, around 7am make the camp nazi rounds, get out to the carg by 11am, climb til 4, then go clock into the cheesecake mines until 11pm.

Anyway, got some good climbs in. Saturday went to Sunshine Buttress. Lena might remember it; it's that crag right off the gorge road that has a 30 second approach, and a sandbagged 12a arete, Unbroken Chain, that is really cool.

Anyway, Mikey was psyched on this bouldery 13c there, and we planned on chopping Unbroken Chain and putting glue-ins in as well. I did the final ascent on the rusty old bolts, sent it easily, which was weird because I remember it being way hard from last year. Tried Mikey's prodge, which had some horrendous holds that I couldn't move off of. Sometime in there, a couple comes up, wanting to climb Unbroken Chain, right after we'd taken its bolts out. Oops. They weren't too butthurt. Capped off the day by getting this softie one three second go.

Yesterday, found out that Endless was open again after the fire. Grabbed a belayer, ran out there. It's pretty eery, the whole loop trail is torched. Got to the Argh prodge, turns out that some firefighters had taken the webbing I'd left on a tree last week, not surprisingly. Decided to TR the prodge one more time before embarking on the R/X ballnuttage, and I could NOT get the crux dyno up above 50% success rate. Then it got hot, so I scroted out. Probably will go lead it later this week, I hope. I'm still scared.

that is awl.

Also, I'm considering getting this image made into a flag to hang at the campground. Think that would go over well in WV?
