I'm kinda tempted, too. The trouble is, what I really like doing with my car is going on climbing trips. I mean, what's the point of having a fuel-efficient car when you can't use it for the times you really need to drive a lot. Driving around town really doesn't add up to much mileage - Allison and I can keep using her car for that.

Just not that much that excites me in the cars available now. Most interesting thing is the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid, which won't be available in the US until (maybe) next year, though it's been out in Japan and Europe for several years already.

Yeah, since I have only one car, I need one that can handle climbing trips. The balance between big-enough-to-sleep/carpool, high-clearance 4wd, and good gas mileage is hard to find. It seems that half of the places at the Red now require that high clearance/4wd shit. Hopefully Subie will keep on keeping on. For a while, at least.

I figure between loyerette and I, we need one long range car and a second short range electric will be fine. Everything is close in the bay area so it's no biggie.

I did think about a chevy volt. My landlords have one and really like it. The 2 year lease was up on the first one and they turned it in and leased another one.

Plus my office has a couple charging stations now. I think in my 30 person company we have 4 full electrics and 4 plug in hybrids.

One of the owners of the company told me yesterday that you can lease an electric Smart car for $130 a month. There's 2k down... but the state will give you a 2k credit, even on a lease. So its basically no money down, and then no fuel cost, for $130 a month.

Allison drives a generic sedan. The best setup for us would be an electric car for around town, and something like the Outlander plug-in hybrid for road trips. But we'll be keeping her car 'til it dies a natural death. We're too cheap smart to get rid of cars just because they don't suit us perfectly.

Our apartment condo complex has a set of garage units that are not attached to the housing units. We have one of the garages. It does have power, and outlets. I don't know who pays for the juice that powers it. It could be us, or it could be the condo association, in which case it's our landlord. Would be pretty sweet to get free charging for an electric car.

Yeah, Banz's Element is pretty cool. But I don't like driving it much (even though i have, for many hundred miles, given that it is Banz's car). Somehow I never got the seat/window mirror adjusted to where it is comfortable. The mirror is so big and square, and yet I feel like my blind spot is bigger than average in the Element.

What's she drive?

So its basically no money down, and then no fuel cost, for $130 a month.

those smart kars are the klowniest of cars.

You should look at your clown car options.

I can't quite manage to pull the klown car option... don't have the right appearance for it. It requires a certain... presence.

yore only cheating yoreself.

I know.

You'd be surprised. Besides you're little, so you've got that going for you. As far as I know, neither Allison nor I look particularly klownlike, but we fit a ridonculous amount of crap in my little two-seater.

Yore out of yore element.

yeah, proper klown kars have four seats. And a climbing pack spot between the two back seats.

Not so sure about the room for a pack between the two back seats. Just saying.

I'd be in trouble if my car were any smaller. The Subie held quite a bit more.

I didn't say it was supposed to be comfortable.
