ron, i do beleive we're going to have to take pbjosh out to the gorge and show him the true meaning of a "mission gorge 11a"....possibly the only sandbag more vile than a woodson "5.11c"

pbj, you will be made to suffer.

that is all.

ps: tenn_dawg is obviously a handsome, intelligent and insightful young man. he'll go far.

My, how these outsiders love to get in the middle of our vitriol! It would be great if we could publish the entire tawdry, profane, absurd and hilariously entertaining body of correspondence that is the result of damn near 30 years of insulting, belittling, debasing, degrading etc. each other.

It would be great to say it was a joke, but it's not. I am better than you in every way except being a boss ranger, and I don't give a damn about that. Talent, brains, guts, muscles (more'n you by the truckload, lil' fella), accomplishments, looks, virtues, creativity, godliness, penmanship, humanity, altruism, goodness, HUMILITY and barbecue skills...all of that I have better than you by plenty. There's more, but I can't think of it now.

That aside, I'm all for dishing out a paddling to the uppity lad. I done all the routes out there, pretty sure you have too. Don't these kids realize that we invented the gorge? Pink?! wHEW! that's another story.

See Ya BVBVBVBBVBVB, .

Don't fergit bub, that everything's been retrobolted out there now, so leading 11 isn't the terror-fest it once was. The Wasp has a bunch of bolts at the bottom now, so the lead is baby-safe, no more tears. It took a real man to lead that thing on the fixed pin, spinner bolt and copperhead toss-n-yank manuver that used to be the pro thru the crux. Now hordes of cub scouts are lined up at the base, waiting their turn to disgrace themselves by hanging on every bolt like a bag o' spuds, as they "lead" it.
No sane man would purposely weight that pin, which used to seperate the men from the boys. Lil' spunky has probably dangled his way up some overbolted line and thinks he's a 5.11 leader at the gorge! we'll see.

Actually, Mission Gorge is San Diego's oldest established climbing area, dating back to the early/mid-60's. Routes there have been put up by a long list of world class climbers through the years. Jerry Galwas, Eric Beck, Ken Cook, Werner Landry, Ric Accomazzo & John Long to name a few. The "B" list includes dozens of climbers you've never heard of, and you couldn't carry their chalkbag.

Despite the humble appearance and nature of the place, the title "King of Mission Gorge" would confer upon its holder a godlike status in the sport, and a place among the legends of climbing. I make no such claim, except for the purpose of belittling my retarded "friend" Bob. Between the two of us, we can claim a hand in the FA of two, maybe three dozen routes out there. I have spent thousands of hours over three decades climbing at The Gorge, and can tell you that those rocks do not give up new routes easily. The FA of any legitimate route at the Gorge is no small accomplishment, and something not open to derision by someone whose entire Mission Gorge experience consists of doing repeats of existing routes.

But then you know all of this, having put up some routes of your own out there, right? Right??

Note to BVBVB: More FA's I forgot: Moonage Daydream, Fool's Gold, Static Pressure, 20 routes in Limbo, and another Dozen in Middle Earth. As I recall, your Fa list includes zingers like Hop on Pop, Cactus Flower, Quack of Ducks (soloed it in tennies, with a pack, carrying a 12 pack, at night, in the rain, on LSD while looking for a wind shelter to fire up a spleeb), Bush Slide Direct and 16 different 5.1 variations on the Skyline Wall. Clearlight was the only decent name you came up with back then. I would have helped if you hadda asked.

I'm starting a new and exclusive club. A small club. If you have hand drilled a 1/4" bolt at The Gorge, you're a member.

ron you pathetic lump of warbling blubber, i soloed the first ascent of "moonage daydream" (aka another one of bvb's spur-of-the-moment highball boulder problem/solos that he didn't bother naming) back when you were still trying to figure out how to buckle up a whillans harness and figure out how to use "those ropey-clippy things"

but that's beside the topic...if someone were to call me "the king of mission gorge" i would consider that the proudest accolade ever conferred upon me in 30 years of climbing...despite my onsight solos of 5.11d cracks at deerhorn (snakefinger, 85', eppi and cilley witnesses, call 'em and ask ya chump), my numerous fa's of the proudest lines 'round the world, the non-stop spanking i delivered to you evertime you were foolhardy enough to try to inch in and bask in my reflected glow...yes, yea verily, the gorge, back in the day, when you were talking 5.10+ and up, was only for the hardest of the hard. and WE were there.

any o' you punk kids wanna take a shot at the title??!? bring it on, lil' homies....

pbjosh, yer GOING DOWN on the bvb/ra/mp/ge sandbag tour. prepare to die.

that is all.

trivia quiz: how long did it take to hand drill a 1/4 incer at the gorge?

about 60 minutes, and usually 2 bits. it's the hardest rock i've ever drilled.

Bring it BUB. I will be heading down there with some random folks this weekend to check the area out. If it meets my extraordinarily high standards I will consider going back with you later this month. Then I will hike all your shit and remind you what you were once inspired to become, a graceful, fit climber. Yup, the smog is getting to me here in Rivercide, going straight to the brain...

Possibly heading your way for mammary Areola Day, if the forest isn't closed...

Still got that immaculate BVB style after all these years. That technique you learned from watching the beached whales transfered well to the rock...

In my experience, installing a 1/4" button head bolt to the strength specifications of the day (body weight and a half)requires the following resources. It should be noted that if the hanger spins or you blow out the hole, you start over.

Overall time 4 to 5 hours minimum. Short list of physical requirements: 15 bits, a 12 pack of colt-45 talls, a fist full of asprin, 2 hammers, a roll of tape, back-brace, ben gay (I know you sure have, bob), ace bandages, one pail of ice, spare odor-eaters, smelling salts, steroids, lots of bactene, thick woolen underpants, several bandanas, a jumbo can of right-guard and litter bearers to haul your broken body off the hill once you're finished.

Contrast that to the most recent masterpiece that I have bestowed upon my fellow climbers for their wonder and enjoyment (don't ask Bob, you can't do it, and as much as I enjoy humiliating you in front of those most important in your life, it's become so routine that I'm starting to lose my stomach for it), where I drilled a 3/8 x 5" deep hole on the lead (under the most harrowing conditions, I assure you) in under 10 seconds with a power drill. Kids these days have it too good. None will ever the special, lonely terror of being on a long and irreversible runout, then taking 30 minutes to drill a hole while slipping around on a greasy 5.9 edge the whole time, knowing that you're a goner if you don't get the job done....
then whacking the bolt in too soon out of desperation, leaving you with a hanger dangling on the end of a tiny bolt that's halfway in and bottomed out as your only pro, then climbing above it so scared your could barf because it looks like the carabiner's weight is slowly pulling it out of the divot..... Those were the days, lad.

about 60 minutes, and usually 2 bits. it's the hardest rock i've ever drilled.

I will have them all wired before you get down here!

No I can't view the pictures because I can't get into the site. I thought it was still down because it hasn't worked for me for over 6 months. Cut and paste the address and email it to me or something.
...According to your lovely wife (whom I have arranged to date in the event of your untimely death), your HMO antics have raised my portion of the national debt by $134.27!

Nice smackdown too, bub. God yer good at that! But before you go in front of all these gullible rubes, beaming and accepting yet another batch of richly undeserved accolades, let's get one thing straight. When it comes to Mission Gorge, I am Captain Kirk, and you are that nameless Lieutenant in the landing party who always gets killed by the alien. Perhaps someday you can work your way up to Mr. Checkov, but your prospects don't look good. And your secret dream of being Lt. Urura is totally out of reach.

Say hello to the family, and hope to see you soon
Regards, Ron
He's dead now Ron, you gonna go macking on Jocelyn? [;)] Just thought I'd dredge up this bit of banter history for entertainment sakes, damn I miss that guy.
