Ricardo Lagos (Ricardol) soloed the Zodiac last week. It was the first big wall he'd ever been on. He topped out after about six days.

Nice.

Damn straight it's nice. Anyone who solos El Cap as his first wall ever is bad to the bone.

Please click here to read a bit about Ricardo's solo.

He actually brought it up here:

http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39339&postdays=0&postorder=asc&topic_view=&start=15

And deservedly got some solid props in that thread. Looks like he's too humble to toot his own horn, so I'm glad someone started a new thread.

Very proud ascent, Ricardo! You're determination is inspirational.

Speaking of soloing...how did your last solo go EP? Did those pushy Brits get in your way? Get to enjoy your beer in peace and quiet?

Bro -- wow. What an inspiration. That's one hell of a TR, and it was well worth the wait. As you're aware, there are several of us on this website who have stood in your quaking boots and retreated. I can assure you, the comments Dave made indicating, "20 days from now, you'll be sitting in your office, and you'll wish you were here doing this climb.." are very, very true. Hat's off to you for having the mental toughness to push on.

In reply to:
my rationalization was that you only get one shot to go big for your first big wall, and I might as well take it, worst thing that could happen would be that I would bail. Later I would realize that the worst thing that could happen would be that I would get myself killed.

 I laughed my ass off reading that quote. It never occurred to me, either, until I was way off the deck. Guess that's the kind of blind stupidity it takes to be a successful aid climber.

Ricardo, I've never met you, but I look forward to shaking your hand some day and personally congratulating you on your success. Very proud ascent, my friend.

Before I toot, let me add that Ricardo's accomplishment is pretty cool. I had climbed ten walls and done four grade V solos before I timidly hiked all my crap up to the base of Zodiac to solo it. By that time, I was a lot more prepared than Ricardo as a wall climber, but I was still very uncertain and nervous about it. Blasting off that first morning took an incredible amount of mental energy. I wanted so bad to have an excuse to bail... but there wasn't one. So from the standpoint of the psych required, Ricardo's climb greatly impresses me.

As for Moonlight Buttress, it was probably the easiest wall I've ever climbed and was really fun. Wish I could free at that level! The ledge on top of p.5 is quite nice and I was set up with the tall can of beer out just as darkness settled in. The next day, the Brits caught up to me on the last pitch and I waved them through (saw 'em later at Indian Creek). I really want to go back to Zion again sometime.

.. i hope to solo another grade VI on el cap next year .. probably tangerine trip .. -- and i also hope to do a wall or two with a partner ..

Wow. That looks like a great route. I already have plans for Joshua Tree for Thanksgiving. And, no offense, but I'm a little shy about jumping on a wall with someone I haven't yet met and climbed with a little. But that sure looks like a nice route....

Can you get away some other time?

AH HA!!! You Pass my test !! I've learned the hard way about jumping on a wall with someone you don't know very well!!
You live in Colorado is that right? We'll have to hook up and do some climbing around here. And yes I can get away any time!!

Ricardol -

Great job. Also, I thought your TR was very well written - you captured the fear factor for me perfectly. It is actually inspiring since you seem to be a regular Joe who has succeeded at something special. I guess you're no longer a regular Joe anymore!

Also, I thought your thought process on nailing in the other forum was great and instructional (I would have reached for the big iron first before I blew out my trousers!).

Take care,

Dana

Ricardo,

On this thread I'd like to congratulate you on your climb. All the controversy on the other thread regarding aid techniques does not take away from the courage it took for you to take on this task and accomplish this. I think it's a totally crazy thing to do. It was a great achievement for you and you really pushed yourself to the limit and beyond.
