Ed D. (a guy in the club I climb with) - 78 and still climbing strong. Climbing with him reminds me that I really do have the rest of my life to climb, and he is a great teacher.

Any partner that's enthusiastic and supportive. I climb my best when my partner hands over the lead to me on something that I think is over my head yet I can tell that they truly believe that I can climb it if I only give it my best shot.

Reading the daily dispatches of Mark Synott, Jared Ogden, and Alex Lowe's climb on Trango Tower in '99 was a distinct turning point for me. I had only been to the climbing gym a few times and climbed outdoors once, but after a few days of following their escapades on-line I knew that I wanted to be a good enough climber some day to have the self-sufficiency and courage to live in the vertical world for days and weeks at a time. Big wall climbing has been a fixation for me ever since. Thank you, Alex Lowe. Ed

marcus garcia. he was part of the group that got me started in climbing, and while they all played a part in the addiction, marcus spent more time teaching me technique and brainwashing my ethics. from him, i learned about traditional ethics, chopping bolts, alpining & mountaineering, and most important of all - moab. after listening to him talk about the fisher towers and looking at some photos, i set my sights on the kingfisher .. and after i made my way to moab, i fell in love with climbing all over again. in fact, that trip is what defined me as a climber - and without knowing it, marcus planted the seeds for a lifestyle that has changed my life in several, profound ways. looking through his photos and slides turned the spark inside me into a raging fire - a fire that made me feel alive. i am forever indebted to the friendship that we shared during my first few months as a climber.

There are people who I can bounce off of, and in their presence I feel like a better climber and/or person, but I am not sure that people "inspire" me, per se. Climbs themselves inspire me. Toproping a steep little finger crack and considering the gear I could put in it, had I the gear, inspires me to 1) spend money I don't have ;) and 2) sharpen my skills as a trad betty. And my own failure inspires me to try harder. (that goes for climbing and other aspects of life...)

All of the original yosemite hardmen. They were out there sending insane lines before most of us were born. I can remember back to when I first started climbing; I saw a picture of Ron Kauk on Magic Line in Yosemite. It was a perfect day and a perfect line. That picture has to be one of the most influential pieces of my early climbing life. Jimmy

In life I think the people who have inspired me the most are Alber t Einstein and Mark Twain. Both normal guys but turned their lives into exciting adventures. Also Mother Teresa, Gandhi and the Dalai Lama. In climbing I think people like Chris Sharma, Tommy Caldwell and Beth Rodden inspire me. This is because like the people mentioned above they were all normal people nothing really exceptional about them. But they became disciplined and trained and 'scent and 'scent and 'scent. Just thinking that there is someone who can climb 5.15, inspires me to climb and train harder!

Lots of people! I'll second Layton Kor, especially since I do most of my climbing in Colorado and Utah. The guy nabbed an incredible amount of first ascents of routes that are today considered the most classic around. Even more so, when he started doing it, Colorado climbing was stuck in the mud and his manic energy took it to a whole new level. Lots of guys from the 70s'--Webster, Wiggins, Dunn, Becker, Erickson, Wunsch, Briggs, etc. etc. etc. I find the exploits of that era really inspirational: free ascents of Jules Verne, Scenic Cruise, the Diamond, etc. A real go-for-broke attitude, true commitment and a sense of adventure. And the modern days reincarnations of the '70s--guys like Mike Pennings, Jonny Copp, the late Cameron Tague. In my own climbing, a couple of partners who I started climbing with a lot this year, Josh Janes and Chris Weidner--in totally different ways, they've really opened my eyes to new approaches toward and styles of climbing. It's helped my climbing so much to get out, and just talk about climbing with those guys. Charles

not trying to be egotistical, but I feel like I am self inspired as far as climbing. Now that I've gone and stepped in it, lemme 'splain. I view climbing as a metaphor for my own spiritual journey. Who else could I look to for guidance on my own path? That being said... anyone who is brave enough to belay me is my hero of the moment! 8) ---Ford--- Some say he is a zen master, others say he is a sh*t head.

Mike Fischesher An all-around great guy that taught me everything that I know about climbing. If it wasnt for this man I would probably spend most of my time high or drunk but, thanks to him I spend it doing something a little more meaningful. Besides being a great all-around climber and first ascentionist, he began an outdoor program in Morganton, NC where I live and is pretty much the reason that any climbers come out of Mo-town at all.

I saw this girl on the Discovery Channel, She was very inspireing... and there is a "bendable" rock climbing doll of her that they sell at galyans. I guess she is pretty much pro...I want to say that her name was Tori or something, I really have no clue what her name was. Apparently her parents brought her to South Africa or somewhere when she was young, and she climbed trees with a monkey, and she is really good because of this...also I saw that her armspan is one inch longer than her height(something she developed because of climbing at a young age I guess). Also I was at a Boy Scout Camp in N.M., and I was climbing for like a day, and the instructors seemed so cool, like it was their life...like that is all they did all day, and they were moving all over the place...I was climbing befor the trip to N.M, but they really got me started. Also, Messner... I guess that he is more known for mountaineering, but because that guy did the first ascent of Everest without supplemental o2, he became some sort of demigod to me I guess...his VOX was like 62, If I ever meet him (which I doubt)...I will bow down before him.

losers, lowlifes, bums, bathstall poets, people who hang out in bus stations. plus that fukkin' manly stud i see in the mirror every day. most the people who've been mentioned so far in this thread would stare at you for awhile, then tell you to go someplace else for your "inspiration", with the possible exception of tori allen, who'd probably ask you if you wanted her autograph, then her dad would step in and try to sell you one of those embarassingly absurd dolls. i mean, fuuck.
