Then after you said yes, he excited started planning what to do next (we have to get a ring! we should go outto dinner! etc.) Wouldn't that have seemed special?
Oh man, even THAT would have been great. Given, the first one was long ago, we were young, it was spontaneous and I was just happy about it. The second one was just random - I knew he'd bought a ring, there had been tons of times on hikes, beaches, etc that he coulda done it. But nope. It was after a crappy day at work, I was complaining about my boss, pouring a glass of wine and walking out of my kitchen and he said "well, maybe this will make you happy" and asked. And sadly, he was one of the more romantic people I'd ever dated and that helped make that moment all the more uneventful :roll: . Ah well, for the best. He wasn't someone I wanted to spend eternity with anyway :wink: . And later proved me right in some pretty bad ways. However, wherever the hell he is now, I would like to have him fall on an ice screw :twisted: :twisted: :lol: :lol: !!!

Last summer as I was climbing Half Dome in Yosemite I met a couple from Austria. They were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary by summitting half dome. The husband told me that he had proposed to his wife at the summit of some mountain in the Alps (don't remember the mountain...sorry... memory fades...). They've been together and climbing ever since. One of the most amazing couples I've ever met, and one of the greatest proposal stories, IMO.

I knew this girl who had this boyfriend who proposed to her in one of those Venitian style boats.
Anyway they are all snug under a blanket, drinking wine and the dude waits until they're about as far away from the dock as they are going to get and whips out the ring. He asks. She says no. He cries.
And it was longest ass boat ride back to the dock that either one of them care to remember.

The way that I feel about her- she is PERFECT in every way.. an absolute angel.. and so when it comes to a proposal, and setting up the rest of our lives, I feel like I would be doing her a great dis-service if I just did something to get it out of the way. (in fact, none of the ideas, even the top of the mountain proposal, seem worthy of her.. She really is my angel..)
OH WOW!!! *gushing* I think that is the most romantic thing I've heard!!!!
I would LOVE if some guy proposed to me on a mountain summit!

My 14'er partner proposed to his now wife, atop of a 14'er. She was miserable, almost in tears when they reached the top. The climb was horrible for her. The proposal changed that pretty quick.
Personally, I don't think I'd care where and how it was done, with ring or without. If someone thought I was special enough to spend the rest of their lives with me, that in itself pretty much makes all the fru fru engagement stuff unnecessary. I'm sure it would make thm moment even more special but wow! It's a pretty powerful and amazing feeling to want to spend the rest of your life with someone.

props to you. this has become quite the conversation and i also understand both perspectives.
sounds like you have this all figured out, and i see no reason why you need our help. you know your gf better than anyone, and i admire the lengths that you have gone, and are going thru to cover all your bases...all the while with HER interests in mind.
just the way you talk about her, it is obvious how special your relationship is. go all out. im sure you are enjoying every moment of all this planning too...just knowing how much she will appreciate your intuition and thoughtfullness.
it isn't about the ring...the place...or any of that...and we all KNOW that. but who doesn't like the 'frills'...the bells and whistles....the details....
i think its understood that the promise you make to her, and the way you express your love to her and desire for her to share her life with you---is what will determine if your love and commitment to oneanother is true. anything beyond that is just an opportunity for YOU to SHOW her how well you know her and what will put a smile on her face.
i think that its great your gf has gotten into climbing...and wonderful that it is something you two can share a love for. your plan is great...the ring sounds great....so at that...GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS IN ADVANCE...sounds like its in the bank!

oh and the ring on the quickdraw at the top of cleaning a route thing...sounds cool!!!
shyte...if i could see a diamond glimmering at the top of a route on a quickdraw...that sure as hell would get my feet moving. no excuse not to make it to the top!!! lol
and especially when cleaning is not so fun....talk about a nice REWARD! now thats INCENTIVE!!!
....just thinking...you got the ring dangling just above you....and the man of your dreams looking down at you with a big ol grin on his face....and probably enjoying every minute of you 'working for it'!!! lol. how cool!

(just jokingly) and he said he was gonna lead a route, and while I was cleaning it, there would be a ring on the last quickdraw.. and then (ofcourse he would be belaying me fro the top, and when i got to the top he would ask me to marry him..
That is the coolest thing I've ever heard of! Man, when (and if) I ever meet someone and we start thinking about the whole marriage thing, I would think something like that would fit right in (if he climbed of course.) Except.. I think I would like to be leading the route :wink: , and then when I go to grab a draw I would see the ring dangling on it. That would be neat!

If you think the location would have as much meaning for her as it would for you (or at least close), go for it. I performed a wedding ceremony for 2 of my friends on the summit of Mt. Sneffels last September and it was a beautiful experience for everyone. I think that setting lends itself to a particularly deep, spiritual, and emotional experience - for me anyway.

that has got to be like the sweetest proposal ever... how could she say no?!? and think of the stories you'll be able to tell... seriously! Granted, I'm not married, but I think that would be like the coolest way to be proposed to, ever!

Every woman, it seems, has a fantasy about the romantic moment of being asked to marry. We men have our own fantasies about it, though. Here's mine (feel free to share, guys):
1. Spell out "MARRY ME JANE" in beer cans on the kitchen floor. Pass out next to your art work. (WARNING: Only works if her name is Jane).
2. Take your soon to be fiance to a strip club and secretly have a dancer pass her a note that says "Will you marry me?"
3. Surprise her at her work during lunch one day by streaking through the cafeteria with nothing on but a sign that says "Will you streak with me forever?". Be sure to do a table dance and shake that package baby.
4. If none of these work, and you still want to get married, I have two words: Condom, pinprick. A few months later, two more words: her father, shotgun. Okay, three words.
