That's right I met Dean Potter last weekend at the new REI in Portland. Man that guy is tall. He was super nice and laid back with the REI people. He signed a big poster of himself on Zig Zag in Yosemite. Needless to say it is now hanging in my dorm. Lets hear about other encounters with the stars of our sport.

I met John Long and Tommy Caldwell at outdoor retailer in Salt Lake. John Long was abrupt, brusque and cursorily thanked me without looking at me when I attempted to compliment him on his writing. Tommy Caldwell was uncomfortable and strange when I attempted to engage him in conversation about the Fortress and complimented him on the ethics of his free ascents on El Cap. Needless to say, the poster he signed is now sitting in a pile at the bottom of my trash can.

I try not to talk to most of the climbing stars, Tommy C, Steven Jefferys, Anker, S. Isaac, Sharma, these guys were all jerks. Heck, I would be too if people were always in my face! But still there's never a reason to act as cocky as these dudes. The only nice ones I met were Dean P., Bill Boyle, and those two old brothers...I can't rember their names, oh well. But on second tought, most climbers are jerks anyways, including me. Oh, Krakaurwhatever's a jerk too. I've seen him climbing with others in documentaries granted I HAVE never met him, but man he treats his climbing partners like morons.

Saw Caldwell and Rodden at a local presentation. Both seemed nice enough, but was shocked at how small they were! Always pictured him as an average sized dude.

anytime you meet a "media" climber, you should either be gratuitously rude to them, ignore them altogether, or pretend you don't recognize them. it'll be good for them, and good for you, too. climbing is not a sport built around individuals -- it's the frikken magazines, along with people who'll actually ask some joker to autograph a poster that some sponsor paid to print -- that are slowly leading climbing to the edge of oblivion.

I grew up hanging around in Royal Robbins shop in Modesto when it was like a mini REI on Needham Ave. and he was still involved in the day to day stuff. He used to let my sis and I sit in these two wicker chairs that he didn't let many people sit in, haha. I was a little, like 3 or 4 years old. They used to have a story gathering now and then when local climbers, guides, kayakers, etc. would get together and shoot the shit. My parents used to guide, this is why I was there. Royal and my dad also started a climbing program for a local boy scout troop. I was too small to remember any of them (stories) accept Royal talking about how he was a trouble maker kid and tried to jump from one train to another as they moved opposite directions. He is one of the nicest and most humble guys I have ever met, and he still climbs now and then. Although old, he is definitely not geriatric!!! The scout troop is still around, and he still takes some of themclimbing from time to time. I also met T.M. Herbert in September while playing around on Stately Pleasure Dome in Tuolumne. Got some beta from him about Chouinard- Herbert Route on Sentinel. He said climbing it once was enough!!! The man gave up soloing just last year. He was climbing in a swami belt, sun hat, wool shirt, and not placing any pro hardly at all. The route is pretty easy, so to each their own. He is also very humble and polite. He can be found in tuolumne pretty often. Several people I know have run into him many times including myself. I went to high school, and ran track with Adrian Crane's son. Also, our team used to run along with their running club on Saturday mornings from Mr. T's Donuts for long runs on the Hetch Hetchy Canal that goes through Modesto. They (Team Karma, Adrian, and Son's) took a stab at Aconcagua and turned back at 22,000 ft. in Late December/early January. Adrian is nice, but has a funny accent. Talked with him a few times about running the Eco Challenge. His son is a fun, humble, normal guy. Very down to earth and chill. Anyways, thats all for me.

I never understood the fascination some have with meeting famous people. I've enjoyed going to listen to famous climbers put on slide shows and talk about their adventures, but I could care less about getting a poster signed or shaking their hand.

Tommy and Beth are super nice, just quiet, shy people. That's often mistaken for haughtiness, which is a pretty judgmental and shallow way to form first impressions. As for "media climbers" -- there aren't any. I'd say, unlike the 1990s, most of the people at the top of the sport today are in it for all the right reasons. IMHO

I can`t agree with your advice bvb. Whenever I have met someone who may be considered famous I simply treat them as I would like to be treated and that is as a normal person. I just don`t see the attraction with hero worship. I`ll say gidday, how are they hanging, or some other silly form of drivel to break the ice and then proceed to treat them very much like I would any other person. If a person deserves my respect then I will give it, if they demand that of me I`ll most likely moon them.

In reply to: He signed a big poster of himself on Zig Zag. Zig Zag is not a route. Know thine idol's accomplishments. It makes idolizing them much more fun.

When I lived in SLC my room-mate who was a bartender got Bachar drunk. He told me about it and even got my name on the guest list for the SLC trade show. I never did meet Bachar though.

I sat around a friend's house the Sunday before last drinking tequila with Jim Bridwell...does that count? 8) Seriously though, most truly remarkable climbing icons tend to be very humble and regular individuals. But they do have way better stories to tell around the campfire/beer cooler than most of us mortals  .

In reply to: I try not to talk to most of the climbing stars, .... Steven Jefferys,....Sharma....these guys were all jerks. Have you actually MET either one of these guys? I know Steven Jeffery personally and by all accounts I've heard, Sharma is one of the nicest guys around. I know Steven to be an extremely humble and genuine climber that reluctantly talks about grades and will climb with anyone that is willing to at least TRY a problem. I'm interested in hearing your bad experiences with both of these guys. Oh....and my boss was good buds with Warren Harding in the 70s. He once told us about visting him up in Yosemite and going out to dinner with him, Royal Robbins, and two of their buds (who he can't remember the names of  ). He signs my paychecks. Does that count? :P
