I've been noticing quite a few threads looking for people to climb with in NOVA lately. I figured we consolidate these random threads and try and get a thread that’s consistent. I realize dcoutdoorrockclimbing does a darn good job of this, but there's no harm in consolidating threads like these here at rc.com. So post up! Going climbing this weekend? Looking for someone to climb with? Planning an local event? Post up!

I'm in nova, and looking for climbing partners. Back home from school in new england. Havent been to sport rock, thought I'd check it out this week. If anyone wants to climb let me know. Sterling sounds good, because its two miles from the Old Dominion Brewery...

Hey cantdog, A couple friends and I usually go to sport rock in Alexandria every Tuesday and Thursday night from 7 to 9. Unfortunately, I won't be able to go tonight. I like Old Dominion being so close to Sterling though... What are peoples plans for the weekend?

Hey all, I think I'm hitting the falls on Saturday, so if your there, look for the young guy with the bald head and a red pack. ( I just described 60 % of the fools at the falls didn't I? ) Zap, I'm setting up plans for the weekend of the 17th. I'll be down there this time. Aikibujin, sorry to hear that man, get better.

ropeburn, what time you planning on getting there? I've got class until 1 then I'll jet over. Keep an eye out for a tall kid with a pony tail and red/black pack.(The other 40%) I was at carderock yesterday, so I guess its time to check out the other side of the river!

ropeburn, my elbow isn't too bad, just overuse (pulling too hard, need to learn to use feet more I guess). I'm taking a month off from climbing just to be safe. I've seen your name a lot in the route database (namely GF), I wonder if I ever ran into you there. cantdog (zssager?), sorry you didn't get to climb. GF is much more spread out than CR. Without a guidebook and not knowing the area it's pretty hard to find someone there. At least it was a nice day to be in the park. How did you like the climbs just from looking at them? A few people from DCOutdoorRockClimbing went to CR on Saturday, I tagged along to practice some self-rescue techniques. We had four ropes set up, stuff between 5.5 and 5.10. I only climbed the easiest slabby route on account of my elbow, but it was good just to get out on a nice day. Near the end of the day I was a little pressed for time to do one more easy climb (boss was having a BBQ that night). I wanted to swap rope with a nearby party on Sweethog, but they were reluctant... which was totally fine, it's their gear. I just hope I wasn't too pushy and came across as a jerk. Apologize to that party if they ever read this.

Its funny, growing up in this area and this was the first time I've been to great falls. Pretty cool looking area, and some of the climbs looked like a lot of fun. Lots of good spots to hang out too. And the rock looked a hell of a lot different than the stuff I was climbing earlier in the week on the otherside. I was thinking of heading over to carderock to see if anyone was still around but it sounded like everyone got there pretty early, so I figured no one would be around at 2 or so.

Hey, I'd be up for one of those 3 this weekend. I can't head all the way out to Seneca since I need to be at least quasi nearby DC to show my apt during some hours this weekend, but Sugarloaf could be cool. Sunday would probably work easier for me. Let me know. I can drive. --K

In reply to: How far is sugarloaf from the area, and what is the climbing there? sport, tr, trad? Which "area"? It's up 270 - past Germantown, MD. It's small (in terms of # of routes) and a bit spread out (in terms of areas) but I find it to be a good area. Most TR though there are routes you can lead on trad gear. Sorry I can't give you more in directions but I only know how to get there by sight. More info in the Horst guide.

You guys gotta really watch Wanderin'. She has been known to attract stalkers, and she is like a turtle on any approach above 7000 ft. Plus she's been climbing alot in CO lately and is likely to scoff at even Seneca as being a chosspile. Me <- evil

Wow! And just like that, the love is gone. Remind me again why I climb with you in CO? Last I heard, you had an unhealthy obsession with spotting for female climbers, and a string of jealous husbands warning their wives away from you. Oh, the shame. The humanity. :nono: And have you picked a climb for next weekend when I get there? Wasn't there some 11.b that was tormenting you? Or is that old bruise still giving you problems? ...wanna dance? ----- You lead it; I'll follow it.

WHAT?! Before 9? What kinda sick masochist are you? Just keep in mind. I'll be on east coast time. No biggie for me. Though as for the Yellow Spur, you are cruel to taunt me. I know you've promised yourself out on that climb to 4 different people. Such a climbing wh*re. I could be so lucky you would save THAT one for me. And 11a? Is this "The Kim" !!! I could tell by the 'sound' of your voice that it's you. I checked your bio and it says that you're leaving on the midnight train to Georgia. Give up this heat and humidity. For what, a couple of 14ers! (I'm talking peaks not inches) And you say there's no "real" climbing in the mid-atlantic. Does Colorado have wake up calls and chauffeur service to the crag....I think not. So I guess this is goodbye. Have fun, Charlie

I don't know how you feel about Crescent Rocks. I just like going there because it only takes twenty minutes instead if 1.5 hours for everywhere else. But I will be up there with my brothers from Utah. Even though you do not know me, anyone who wants to come is welcome. I am kinda new to climbing so I haven't really met a lot of people besides my brothers who climb. So this would be a good opp. daniela

I was thinking of a Great Falls day due to the forecast. Crescent might be doable though, what time are you planning on being there?

I will be there from around 9 am maybe sooner maybe a little later, due to the fact my brothers like to sleep in. As soon as I get there in the morning I will be there all day and into the evening, so if you want come up. I will also be going to the climbing gym in Sterling today around 4 p.m. If you want to climb tonight. I have never been to this gym, hope it is fun :o p.s. we always park on the road at crescent, so we don't have to walk 3 or 4 miles with heavy packs. daniela

I've never been there but thought not parking in the lot was frowned upon? Aren't there some access issues with regards to the adjacent neighborhood?

The people that I have talked to that live on the road do not have any problems as long as your respectful. Also, all summer there have been camps up there during the week and the instructors park alongside of the road and the buses park further on down the road. I guess as long as you do not block the road when you park and don't leave trash or make a lot of noise going down the road they don't mind. Daniela

My children and I have climbed the Sandbox and Dihedral sections of Great Falls until we can do most of the routes blindfolded. They want to climb something else at Great Falls. Any recommendations? They're turning into badasses and want something higher (although not harder). And don't forget the adopt a crag day. I'll be there.

there's this climb called snowflake i think which is a 5.7ish or something. it's before aid box and the belay is right on the water. just upriver from it is romeo's ladder which is a 5.6 i think...there's a couple of other good climbs in this area and they can all be reached from walking along rocks by the river. i remember really liking everything around there when i was younger. also, aid box is easy to get to and there's a good 5.7 there.

I concur that Snowflake is a good climb, which by the way is located at the Seculsion area, but if Pedro's looking for some longer climbs, Aid Box isn't the place to be.

In reply to: My children and I have climbed the Sandbox and Dihedral sections of Great Falls until we can do most of the routes blindfolded. They want to climb something else at Great Falls. Any recommendations? They're turning into badasses and want something higher (although not harder). And don't forget the adopt a crag day. I'll be there. Like many has already suggested, the Seclusion area is a good place to go, it's comparable to Dihedrals in height. Besides Snowflakes (5.6), Great Beginnings (5.7) is also a nice climb, starting out with some fun layback/underclings, and finish up on a corner/crack. If your kids are feeling really strong, they can try the first half of Strong Finish (5.10) on the same TR setup as Great Beginnings. There aren't any climbs in GF that are higher than Dihedrals and Seculsion areas, so they'll just have to start climbing harder stuff if they get bored with these two areas.

Any one from just south of the NOVA area....like Charlottesville? I am in need of a partner/mentor for climbing outdoors. I climb about 5.9-5.10 in the gym. To this point my out side climbing has consisted of a guided trip to Seneca and a fair amount of top roping in the central virginia area (most of which has not been rated). I have done several "mock leads" while on toprope and I am very interested in taking the next step to leading, but I would really like to follow on some routes before I do (for obvious reasons). Any one interested feel free to drop me a reply or PM (also my email address is at the bottom). -Shawn pegasusfp24@mac.com

Hey, climbed with jbroscious today at Great Falls. Good time around the Aid Box and my first time back outside in the DC area since my return from overseas. If you're looking to go in the DC area during the week, he's ready and a good partner. Later!

Need a GF partner for after work. I can always get to Difficult Run parking lot by 5:30 and a lot of times by 4:30. I know the days are getting shorter and colder but don't care. Hopefully someone else with the same schedule won't either. I expect I'll be getting out there freezing my ass off until mid December or so. TR 5.10 solidly and am easy to get along with. Hit me up if you're down...

Hey, looking to get back into climbing after a bit of a coma.. er.. sabatical. I'm into trad stuff mostly (what I've done mostly) and used to be around a 5.9-5.10 lead or follow (I'm kinda stupid that way) I've got most all the gear, if you don't mind long runouts. I'm in the Culpeper area now, but used to do the Great Falls/Carderock thing on a daily basis. If you think you can put up with me, im or e-mail me... I'm actually quite safe 8^) ... no really

Pearl Jam Rock: For Bouldering, check out Carderock, across the river from Great Falls. There is a lot of highball/slab climbing there. The rock is slick and polished, bet there are quite a few problems to be found, of varying height and difficulty. There are most always other boulderers around, who will probably show you around. Some of my favorite stuff there is actually away from the main cliffline, closer to the river. If you are at the far upstream end, looking at the cliffs, look for a faint trail into the woods behind you. Explore a bit, and you'll find some more secluded boulders with more "traditional" problems. Also, there are usually large groups at the main clifs, so the wood/river boulders offer some nice seclusion. Have fun, BB

My friend and I usually climb at Buzzard or Crescent Rocks. We have climbed there all summer so we want to get introduced to some new areas within 1.5-2 hour drive time. We want to try a new area on Sunday. So I am looking for someone who would be willing to show us some good climbs, etc. I have all the necessary gear. Just tell me the time, place and how to get there. Thanks ahead of time! Daniela

Just wondering if any locals around Great Falls could guess about how busy it will be memorial day weekend. I am from SE PA and plan on staying the weekend. Is it even worth trying to get a spot... or should I try a place further away from the cities. Like Sugarloaf etc. Any recommendations on good camping spots. I am taking my wife so we will be sticking to 5.7 and below, toprope only. Thanks in advance Tom

Get to Great Falls early if you wanna climb. By 8:00 there are usually 4-6 rigs already set up and climbing, by 9:30, the whole place is packed. You could also try Carderock or be adventerous and go some other place at Great Falls. There are more climbing areas than that little 100 yd. section with Juliet's balcony and Romeos Pitch. Chris

Any of you folks climb in the mornings at Great falls or Carder RocK? If any does, or is interested, PM me. I can't seem to find any time in the afternoons and weekends these days, so I thought i'd give the mornings a try.

Hey Bruce! There will be a group of Philly-area peeps camping at Snowbird this weekend for the 4th. I believe we're pitching tents in the field behind the Teepees (I think where we all camped last Thanksgiving), you should come over and hang around the fire with us, I haven't seen you since last year! K. p.s. I'm actually leading now, how scary is that?? :)

thinking about going to etreks in timonium this weekend, but am up for anything else. would anybody like to join me or is there anything out there better that i might be able to tag along on? thanks.
In reply to: I've been noticing quite a few threads looking for people to climb with in NOVA lately. Post up!

Hey, I'm new to the board and have been climbing for about a year. I am 23 year old male and just moved into the Northern Virginia/ DC area and have been trying to go to Great Falls as frequently as possible, but am having trouble finding climbing partners. I was a 5.10 climber in the gym (whatever that means) when I was climbing 4-5 times a week, but now that I only find a partner once every two weeks or so, I find myself outdoor toproping around 5.8-5.9. I have all the gear for toprope setup (60m rope, webbing, etc.) Looking for someone to climb with/ hang out on the rocks/ maybe even learn a few things. Thanks

DC if your not getting much love on this forum, hit up the DC outdoor rock climbing forum......I would assume that it is bred out of this and I have had pretty good luck finding partners. I too am a grad student who recently moved here and may be down for climbing at Carder Rock this weekend. Email me reid_olmstead@yahoo.com or shoot a buzz on my cell 315-521-2941. Best Reid

Hey all, I'm looking for climbing partners in the DC area to climb with and hopefully learn from. I have some experiencing top roping. I'm hoping to broaden my horizons into Trad leading, Ice, Aid/Big Wall, Alpine, Everything! My schedule is hectic (School, 2 Jobs, Volunteer Work) but I do find myself with a lot of free time a few times a week. What do I have to offer? 50 m and 60 m of 10+mm rope, an Xterra with a lot of trunk space, and I work at Hudson Trail Outfitters (awesome employee discounts) :D If anyone is looking for a climbing partner or is willing to help me learn, please PM/IM/Email me. Take care yall Bevans

I'm moving to NOVA and am looking for climbing partner(s). I'm a beginner with basic gear (harness, shoes, helmet, belay device). I've never climbed in NOVA, but did some climbing last fall in California. Basically, I've never lead climbed but can do a gret job cleaning up. I'm definitely looking to improve my skills. My ability is in the 5.6-5.8 range. Please let me know if you're interested! :D

Hi everyone. I'm from Bogota, Colombia. This is my third time at the U.S, last to times I went to a Summer camp up at the Adirondacks and after camp I went to the Gunks for a month each time. In this trip I'm working here in Philadelphia, I just have Sunday off, but I could do a trip for some days anyway. I'm a solid 10 trad, but I use to sport 11,12. I also love boudering. so if somebody want to help me on this, because cultures and everything is so different here that in my country. check out Suesca, Colombia to find where is my school, 400 routes, 4 pitch long, amazing place. Thanks, so I'm waiting for your responses and any question about my country and whatever

I was at Buzzard Rocks today and met two hardened Alpinists running up and down the classics. Hey Brian and Bruce, glad we got to run into you and thanks for helping me figure out which routes were which. Give me a call when you want to go climbing. I'm new here and still looking for a partner for Seneca the weekend of July 8-9th. Jsands "at" monitorres.com **edited for correct email** Later, Jeff

I've got some questions about the local ethic... I've gone out to Buzzard Rocks a couple times recently and am new to the area. Is the local ethic to rap off of trees? Or walk around? I saw slings once but they were cut off a few days later. It seems that rap bolts up top would cause less damage to the trees and bushes. That being said, the place is over-bolted to my tastes. If it were my cliff, I'd chop a bunch and install some more up top. But it's not, so you tell me... I encourage serious answers or flames - at least it will keep this post vibrant. When you're up for some climbing out there, let me know. Jeff

Jeff, Every time I've been out there, aside from the day we met, I've walked off. Doing two raps to get off m brotherhood is pointless, you beat us walking down. eh, shrug. I'm gonna go grab a beer.

I'm heading to Linville Gorge in NC this weekend for some trad climbing. There are three of us so far, but we need a fourth. I'd welcome along anyone that wants to second me or switch off leads. We're leaving on Thursday night and returning Sunday afternoon. Anybody interested in joining?

Hey folks! I'm making a road trip down to NC end of the month and am pretty sure I drive through Virginia to get there. Would love to get a day or 2 of climbing on my way down and/or back up to break up the drive a bit. Anyone who knows the area interested in meeting up? Same goes for any folks who live in NC! :)

Hey, Just started reading these message boards again the other day....my usual climbing partner just moved to CO so I'm looking for some new people to climb with. Wouldn't mind hitting the gym occasionaly, or rocking great falls/carderock as the weather allows on the weekends. Been climbing for a while, but wouldn't mind showing someone the ropes and such...

So all you folks in NOVA were looking for partners while i was climbing the falls all day (every day i had a belay!) home for winter break. I think in the interest of meeting some of you casually I might try to start a tradition... right here and right now. I climb at the falls alot, and from now on, I'll sign in with my RC.com name added. If a bunch of people do this we might found out more people are there, when we are, then we knew... and to those of you wondering about sterling sportrock, it's pretty sweet, great bouldering section. Bad news (kinda) about old dominion brewing co. they were bought by anheiser busch. They probably wont fool around with them tho.

My brother and I have just started climbing (~4 months) and just love it. We have spent most of our time at the gym given the poor weather conditions as of late, however I can't wait to get outside! Hope to see some of you guys here out there. Cheers, Andy

Hey I recognize your picture! I've seen you at Sportrock in Sterling. I'm the ugly guy who has no game, especially when you're as attractive as you are. Anyways, I would love to climb with you sometime. Once we get that extra hour in the evenings I will try to get outside to Great Falls for a couple of hours on the weekdays. Also, the weather is getting good enough to justify weekend trips. The gym is fun but nothing beats being outside. I would love to partner up if our schedules match. Hopefully I'll see ya at Sterling soon. Joe

I just recently moved to DC area about a month ago and am looking for someone to climb with. I'm a solid 5.8, 5.9 climber, been climbing for 2+ years, and am looking to improve my skills. Have some leading experience, as well. Prefer to climb indoor at Earthtrek in Rockville, MD, to start - have not climbed on rope in a few weeks. I did go boulder, but don't enjoy that as much. I need to get back in shape for outdoor climbing. Sunday afternoons and/or Mon through Wed are ideal times for me. If you're a beginner, I'd be happy to give you some pointers. If you're experienced, I'd be happy to <i>get</i> some pointers. Email if interested.

To be sincerely honest with you, I really don't care nor am I crying over anything...it just sorta deviated from the point of the thread. Haha, you did post looking for climbing partners so I can't fault you for that...

I am new in little old centreville and belong to lifetime fitness where there is a small but decent wall to mess around on. I am looking for a partner! I have climbed for about a year and am also desperately looking to get outside if there are any takers.

So yeah I posted back in January and forgot all about it, but now that it's staying light and warmer later, would anyone be interested in trying to climb any weeknights at Great Falls or Carderock? Maybe trying to organize a weekly night or something like that could be fun.....

New to the area with beg/int climbing experience, looking for a partner. Have lead a 5.8 sport climb, followed a 5.10c. Followed a 5.9 trad climb, but haven't placed gear other than anchors for top-roping. Have done some indoor climbing, but prefer real rock. Enjoy climbing but am not snobby about it. Fresh from Colorado, but don't fell sorry for me - send me a line!

i'm looking for somebody to climb with this weekend in theD.C. area: Seneca, Sugarloaf, Rocks MD, etc. I have a rack and lead low moderates; 4's/5's but can follow 7's fine; and an 8 a day is cool too. Ideally i'm looking for a reg partner to go out with on the weekends, but right now i'm mostly concerned with getting out this weekend. PM me if interested

Just moved to the Gaithersburg area and looking to climb...outdoor and indoors when the weather gets colder. I don't have much outdoor experience though following at Rumney last weekend was incredible! Looking for some more experienced climbers to help me get comfortable being outside, as I have climbed mostly in the gym for many years. I have lots of availability too.....

This NOVA section is lame. I've lived in this area for nearly 3 years and have occasionaly checked this sight for anything worth a damn and have found basically shit. Nobody seems to climb at Great Falls regularly unless you are a highschool kid who is just getting into it and doesn't know about gyms yet. They rule. Hopefully you'll run into one of them and they can teach you a thing or two. Or you are an old fart who has every route wired and "trains" there. Or you are a noob who is having fun outside and will either decide that Great Falls is too hard, after all you climb 2 grades harder in the gym, or have an epiphany and begin climbing there all the time to later progress into sport leading at Franklin, then the NRG, then plugging gear at Seneca, and everywhere else. Or, you're like me and have climbed just about everything there and is already pluggin gear and climbing at a certain level and is looking for a community in this region. WELL, this brings me to my point that I can't seem to find one. Where the hell are the climbers in NOVA. Yea, this might seem like a rant, and yea I"m 5 beers in on a Wed. (workweek) but damn, does NOVA really suck this bad. Shit, we have world class single pitch cracks at Old Rag up two 13.b (damn, fucking hard, who wants to rally up and work it w/ me) and there is great bouldering on toprope at Great Falls if you free your mind from that ridiculous guide book and seek out hard lines. I have one right now that is kicking my ass. I need help solving this one. Who wants to step up. Its harder than the Strain, I know that much. Somebody for god sake post to this pathetic rant.

I'm so used to not even checking this tread that I had to do a double take when I saw the date of the last post. Nice rant man. If our redpoint levels were a little closer I would suggest we hit up Old Rag some time but as it is, I think we might bore one another. Rant on crazy man rant on.

My, but can't we rant and rave. As one of the old farts at G.F., I must see your route that is harder than the strain. Maybe it's the age, but I stilll can't get up D. Greens Flying Machine. My favorite area is Birds Nest; I'll be there sunday, oct 14, so please come and show me how to do the direct start to Fair Square. I always seem to have to cheat and start on Eagles Nest and then traverse over to the arete. I'll sign in on the climbers book as Bob A. (age 51). Look me up; if we get along, we can talk about Seneca, as I'll be there next weekend for the cookoff.

Wow, someone other than me climbs at GF. Its good to hear from ya. Sorry I missed you this weekend. I've been heading to the New with my girlfriend just about every weekend for the past month or so. I'll be up there the next 2 weekends but maybe we can meet up sometime in November or early December. Its never too cold to climb at GF. Shit, you only have to climb 40-50 feet at most. I love Birds nest area also. Between the highways, Eagle's nest, Fair Square, Face and Flop, its awesome. Next time I get out there Im gonna give plumb line proper a go. Someone told me a few years ago that it doesn't go anymore because of the block that fell out. But last time I was out there I checked it out while TRing on One Lane and I think its possible to link up a sequence through there. Anyways, as you can tell I'm psyched on climbing. And when I can't leave town Im usually there. After all I gotta figure out this line thats shutting me down. Keep in touch.

Hey Y'all! How's it going. Well it's been almosta year since I've been climbing, except for three days in which I took some newbies out. I've been on a little brake, called working my tail off at work, whiel getting fat and weak. I'm looking at making a comeback so, shoot me an e-mail if you want to get out and send a couple of moderates at GF, 5.7-5.9. I know almost all the routes by heart, but I've been out of touch for a while, so it'll be interesting.

I enjoyed that rant...mostly because I too find the postings of the NOVA climbers a little on the slim side. I've been here about a year and I know there are lots of climbers, but I guess everyone has their own little climbing niche already. As to climbing around here, I'm always up for a climb...That said I have to wait about 8 weeks 'cause I broke my ankle on the bouldering wall last week :(. But I'm healing and will be back on the rocks soon. Anyone planning on road tripping to the Red Rock Rendezvous??

Sorry to hear that you broke your ankle, but how in the hell did you do it on a wall (in a gym, I presume)? How hard was the problem-your profile states that you boulder V3. Anyway, get well-give me an e-mail and we'll go to GF. I'll be at ET in Columbia probably on sat. and definitely sunday. Get well soon!

You know this maybe the single most neglected thread on this whole site. This thing has been up since 2004 and we are only 8 pages in, terrible lack of solidarity us Virginians have.

I thought it was the most common climbing related injury...come off the wall, roll your ankle on the mats. And yes, it was inside, uber-lame, i know. I was climbing an indoor V3, warming up basically and trying a move that seemed kind of odd. Tried a awkward sideways dynamic move to the next hold and missed and came off the wall in an unexpected direction so my foot went between two of the draggabe gymnastic mats. ~sigh~ Good news is I'm down to one crutch. Lesson learned, watch were you land! I agree this is a neglected thread. So I feel it is a good mission to try and revive it. Maybe if we throw in a bunch of searchable keywords we can bring wayward, climbing web junkies forth to comment on NOVA. :)

Ok I got it. I'm about to create 2 posts with eye catching titles to lure the unexpected in. The titles are "5.15b FA in Great Falls" and "Open Project at Seneca just Climbed by Sonnie Trotter." Lets see what we get. Inside the post I will explain that obviously these are bullshit and we are trying to find other climbers in the NOVA area who climb outside locally on a regular basis, meaning GF, Carderrock, Ravens Rock, Sugarloaf Mtn, Old Rag, Seneca, and NRG. Hook, Line, and hopefully Sinker.

Nice. Reel 'em in! Considering how many people can be climbing at Sportrock at one time I'm sure there are more out there. I guess the question is how likely they are to give in the the mind-numbing-rock-banter which is...rc.com...hmm

So, I was in the best shape of my life this fall and sending like a madman. Fresh off a summer in Yosemite I attacked NRG looking to get strong on trad lines. I sent many 5.11 gear routes and even managed to tick my first 5.13 sport route. I got the FA of PVA(potomac Valley Arete) at Great Falls. Head up PVO but instead of using the crimps on the face to get over the roof go out left using the arete and climb up arete. About 3 weeks ago I took a really nasty fall on Portley Gentleman's Route at the New. I'd been working this route all Fall and never top roped it instead trying to be all hardcore and go ground up on every attempt. Well, 3 weeks ago I pushed farther into the unknown nearly sending but just pumped out and froze and took a 15 footer into the arete and bruised the shit out of heel. Been out of commission since. Drinking way too much beer and dreaming of getting back on that thing for redemption. So, that was a glimpse into my season lets hear something.

So is PVA this new route I've been hearing so much about? It sounds like an alternative start to The Strain. I would love to meet you and climb at GF. As earlier posted, I have a helluva time getting up Darius Greens Flying Machine. I've also got a heinous project down at Cow Hoof. I'll be glad to show you if and when we ever meet. I figure it goes at least at 12d. Oh, by the way, have you ever pulled Oyster clean? Now that's one thin climb!!

No, the east is not Yosemite, but Seneca is pretty damn cool. The 5.10's are real and the roofs are cool. Really want to climb more areas in VA, and definitely want to climb at the Gunks and NRG before I head back to Cali. Just think you'll have a place to crash out West someday and a partner if you need one. I am hunkering down for this thing they call Noreaster now, but I am ready to climb come good weather. pydestcroix@gmail.com

I can't believe I havn't tradded in Seneca yet! I hear all this great talk but haven't yet gotten the opportunity to head down there for some multi-pitch goodness... Once the damn ankle heals I'll be headed to RRG then trying to get in trips to Seneca, NRG and the Gunks. I'd like to get back to the daks too..it's been awhile... Im intrigued to hear that people are still putting up FA's in GF. I didnt there was anything left to work with, then again I don't frequent that area to avoid the crowds.

Hey all, I hope people are still watching this thread, because I am looking for a partner or four. I've had partners off and on in this area, but need more. I would rather lead routes than TR, hands down; but I am up for TR if thats all there is. We will have some warm days this winter, so I will be looking to climb soon. Hit me up. Chris Lofstrom

I haven't tried Oyster yet. It looks painful. Maybe I'll start working that after I send this line down stream. I suprised myself last week and nearly sent plumb line direct within a few tries. I need to go back and scope out a good upper hold. I don't think its too bad though. Kinda an eliminate I guess. Did you go anywhere over Christmas/New Years? I spent 3 days in NC at Linville Gorge with my friend Gray. Weather was horrible, raining everyday, but we did manage an ascent of the Daddy 5.6 4 pitches. It was kinda like I imagine climbing a waterfall. By pitch 2 I was soaked from head to toe. Great fun nevertheless. I'm still kinda busted from a bad fall Thanksgiving weekend. Hopefully that will heal up soon. I tried to do some leading at the gym and backed off of a potential fall for fear of re-injurying myself. I just want it to snow for a month so I can get out and do some skiing. Of course it the weather continues to stay steady at 70 degrees I won't complain. That will make for a lot of GF days.

Anyone looking for daytime indoor/outdoor partners? I'm on restaurant time and have my early afternoons free. Prefer Earthtreks to Sportrock but could do either. Let me know if you are free during the day!

Munky, I was out at GF last Sunday with a "new to trad" climber, and we did the usual stuff at Aid Box. I plan on being at GF (not sure what areas) this Sunday. If you can make it, maybe we can send some of the more difficult lines. E-mail me here, or on my personal (see profile). I'll probably show up around 10:30-11:00.

Hey guys quick question for you, just how crowded is Sportrock Alexandria most of the time? During members only hours? Weekends? Right now me and my girlfriend live in Fairfax and climb at the Sterling Sportrock but in a few months we will be moving to the Springfield/Alexandria area and the Alexandria Sportrock will be alot closer. Our worry is that all we ever hear is that it is always packed and also alot of people says it smells, well, interesting in there. Would we be better off making the long drive to Sterling still or even to Rockville?

Hey, I tend to bounce between the two gyms since one is near work and the other is near home. The Alexandria gym is definitely more crowded but it seems to hold a crowd better than sterling. Im sure some days are worse than others. I also find it's less of the kids climbing team taking over the whole gym and more just people coming to climb. They have crack climbs too which is awesome. As for the smell, it is a bit funky in there. Kind of like one big locker room...

I was excited to hear they have some routes with cracks, sterling has none that I know of. As for the smell I wonder what the deal is, poor ventilation maybe?

Well I guess Im just out of the loop there...I didnt know about the members only hours. I expect that other than parties and weekends it might not make all that much difference. Yeah, big warehouse...i suspect poor ventilation as well. Sterling has those big vents everywhere...i dont recall seeing those in Alex.

Dunno their site says members only 6-9, guess ill just have to suck it up and go check it out, as long as I can find a route to climber or a little piece of my own to boulder I guess i should be happy. Thanks for the info.

The few times I've been to the SR in Alexandria it wasn't too crowded. The bouldering area can fill up but it still never seems like your climbing over people or waiting in line or anything like that. The parking however, can be a bitch.

Sorry to hear that you had to work. It was a beautiful weekend. Do you at least get a chance to get out during the week? Sometimes its actually better to work the weekends and get out during the week to avoid the crowds.

How was everyone's Memorial Day weekend? Any memorable sends, desperate onsights, humorous moments, etc? Anyone up for a trip to the New this weekend? Weather looks good. I'm fresh off of a 4 day trip to Black Canyon and CO Monument and want to keep the momentum going.

Yea, weather was great. Snow on the rim of the Black but down in the canyon around 55 degrees. I climbed in a jacket. They had a big snow year this year because all of the passes still had tons of snow. Have fun on your trip. It sounds like you need one after all those hours.

Hey, Looking for someone to climb with this Thursday and/or Friday (6/11,6/12). I just moved to northern Virginia and don't know any climbers in the area. I've never climbed up here but been climbing for 3 years (bouldering, TR, sport, some trad) in Harrisonburg area, Franklin, Seneca, NRG. Worked for my university leading small groups out hiking and climbing. I have gear and I can teach if needed (used to doing this for work). Just looking to have a good time and climb outside before work starts next Monday and I'll be limited to weekends, which sound like they are crowded. PM me if interested. -Esteban

Damn, three months without a post. VA must be some kind of climbers vacuum. Havn't climbed in Maryland ever actually but was at Old Rag last Thur. and Sat. The weather was amazing and not to crowded...good times.

Ohh baby I was bound for Mexico. So I'm interested in climbing in Mexico for the winter and I'm looking to catch a ride with someone at least part of the way. So is anyone from the DC area or even North Carolina or Tennessee headed to MEXICO, TEXAS, OR COLORADO (or even just out west in general) at the end of OCTOBER or beginning of NOVEMBER? I could definitely throw down on gass money, and for a climber I don't even smell that bad.

Hey guys! name's Paul! I'm new to outdoor climbing, because i have not had many opportunities to go outdoors. I'd like to go outdoor climbing on the weekends as much as possible between now and august, when i go back to school. If there is anyone out there who might be willing the help show me how to set up toprope anchors, I'd Really appreciate it! i'd like to start with something close, like great falls (i live in fairfax) and maybe would be willing to adventure out farther as i grew more confident. happy climbing!

4th Annual Birdsboro CLimb and Clean All, please join us for the climb and clean at Birdsboro quarry on September 25th/26th. Camping starts on Friday night. We will be cleaning and climbing all day on Saturday. Followed by a community dinner with entertainment and raffle (lots of great gear) on Saturday night at the Pavillion in Rustic Park. Sunday we will resume climbing and finish up any project work. For those of you with non climbing friends, we will have equipment, ropes, belayers and we will set up some TRs. All proceeds from the dinner and raffle go to cliff maintenance.

I'm new to the area and looking for someone to go out climbing with this weekend (Oct 23-24). I live in Arlington but am willing to drive a few hours. I like to boulder, sport climb (from the midwest, never climbed trad), or top rope if all else fails. Let me know if you wanna get out as I would really like to learn what this area has to offer. Also, if anyone has good info about bouldering in a 2 hour radius from DC it would be greatly appreciated.

Old Rag has a lot of great bouldering. It's right on the border of the 2 hour radius, but well worth the drive.

Looking to head out to GF tomorrow (Saturday, 11/27). Relatively new climber. Happy second'ing trad, as well as leading sport. I'm not a good judge of my rated ability. I guess 5.7-5.10ish -- I was quickly/comfortably leading and second'ing a handful of routes at Buzzard Rocks for comparison... I'm coming from Arlington, and could be easily convinced to make a longer trip (as in a 1-2 hour drive).

I'm in Fairfax so if someone's looking to get some extra climbing with a chill dude, hmu. I can climb up to 5.10d right now and looking to get better My #'s 703 953 4631

Does anyone have old climbing rope they don't want anymore? I DO NOT WANT IT FOR CLIMBING - I had an old section or two but use them for long lead training for my 70# Lab - they're now worn through and need to be replaced. Instead of buying more [brand new] for $$$ I was hoping someone here had some they didn't need anymore. I climb/boulder/etc too, so I'm well aware that it is not to be used for anything (other than as a leash) - Thanks! Steve

Anyone up for one of the local spots this weekend, up to and including bushwhacking through Old Rag? Or even Seneca? I won't have a car though :( I can bike to meet you anywhere near DC proper though. Thanks!
