if you plan to do some via ferrata, fingerless gloves are typically worn to protect against frayed cables etc. Instead of the usual kevlar-palmed or leather palmed via ferrata gloves made by Salewa et al, i recommend getting a pair of very thin nitrile gloves from Home Depot, provides super sticky grip on the cables in vertical situations and holds up surprisingly well to all-day use. Edelrid makes some nice lanyards with swivel and elastic lanyards, both useful features.

Like I said, a cancer beginning to spread in the US. You're Cancer Actually, Virgo/Scorpio if I believed, but when it comes to drilling ladders and cables to enable a metallic, six flags version of vertical entertainment there's no question where I stand. Anyone with half a brain and who calls themselves a climber should consider a similar stance against these things no proliferating in this country.

that's a very elitist and selfish attitude. what gives us climbers the right to claim all cliffs as our own and deny access to others who also love exposure and verticality but may not be as proficient as we are? besides, there is plenty of rock to go around. climbers and ferratists coexist happily in Europe, and climbers often use ferrate to access climbs or descend from climbs. ferrate also give climbers access to vertical enjoyment on days when weather makes climbing less feasible. should climbers also say that hikers cannot use climbing access trails? maybe we should chop all bolts too since, like ferrate, they make climbing too easy.

Except via feratta isn't climbing, should never be confused with climbing, and should be fought at every opportunity on every front it appears in this country. Call it what you will - there isn't enough rock in this country for that kind of carnival-ride bullshit. Take it to the Mall of America where it belongs.

not enough rock in this country? should we now tear down the Cables on Half Dome because they are carnival ride bullshit too? try a ferrata sometime. besides, a lot of ferrate don't even go harder than 4th class, so there is no conflict with climbers.

At least on HD they're feet are on stone, but yeah, taking the cables down would be great as that's another full-on sideshow that could definitely be done away with, but that's not gonna happen. Again, it isn't climbing, it's ladders drilled on rock that have nothing whatsoever to do with climbing.

I did the via ferrata at Nelson Rocks a few weeks ago. It was a lot of fun. It started snowing when we were on top of the spire. Any active healthy person can do it without physical trouble. If you have the skills for multi-pitch climbing, it may not be worth it for you to blow $70/person. It is definitely much more exposed than Precipice / Beehive. I think via ferrata would be much better, Euro style, without the fee, in the middle of a hike.

In a way I agree with you but the only ferrate that ive been on was on rock that wasn't worth climbing. It was just a cool use of otherwise useless rock. I took my GF and her brother and they loved it. They arn't into climbing which is fine but they got to experience what I get out of climbing in a more comfortable environment. Adventure is the best part of life and if ferrate are managed right and use sub-par rock Im all for it. Viva Via Ferrata
