I'll buck the western trend and vote for Burlington, VT.
*Small but vibrant city with nightlife and abundent cultural opportunities.
*The best skiing in the east within 1-2 hours (Stowe, Sugarbush, Mad River Glen, Smuggler's Notch, Jay).
*Lots of job opportunities
*Reasonable (though certainly not cheap) cost of living
*1.5 hours to Rumney if you're in to clipping bolts, plus a rapidly growing after work climbing scene.
*1.5 hours to Cannon if you want longish trad routes
*1.5 hours to the Adirondacks, including Pokomoonshine, one of the best crags around.
*3 hours to world class granite in N. Conway.
*Fair after work bouldering in Smugglers' Notch
*Smack dab in the middle of the best concentration of waterfall ice climbing in the lower 48 (and yes, I've climbed tons of western ice- Lake Willoughby is the best ice crag this side of B.C., hands down)
*Right on Lake Champlain for sea kayaking and sailing.
*Great mountain biking, road riding, and trail running / hiking very close to town.
The downsides:
*Summers are sometimes rainy, though they can be dry too.
*It does get cold, but the ice is sooooo good...
*Lame whitewater scene
*No real proximity to long rock routes. The longest in the area are around 6 pitches.
All things considered, it's a pretty fantastic place. Kinda makes me wonder why I left.

- last story i heard about our public trans. the bus driver got out of his seat and beat
up a passenger, while the bus was moving at 40mph. the bus crashed into a
building damaging the bus and the building and injuring the driver and the one
passenger...
a bridge to canada that you can see the ground through the road...

- shit....jsut stupid people period, lol.
125feet above sea level...
skiing on landfills - 180feet verticle..
abandoned buildings - good for urban exploration...
we used to have the best club in north america Motor Lounge, its closed now :(

Funny you should mention that, actually. I was on the New York side of the Lake not too long ago, and I really think I did!
I'm a total skeptic about that sort of thing, but no sh#t, what I saw was pretty god damned strange. 2 dark colored humps sticking about 2 feet out of the water, and moving along quickly enough to generate a minor wake.
I know that sounds nuts, but I'm not kidding. I couldn't believe my f*cking eyes. Wierd....

One big vote for Portland, Oregon.
Recently voted the best city to live in the nation by Fortune magazine in 2004, and got on the list for best outdoorist city by outside magazine in 2005. Outside didn't have any ranking, but just listed a bunch of cities. OK, so reasons why Portland rocks so much.
1. Year round Skiing/Snowboarding. Mt. Hood Meadows is where world famous riders and skiers come to practice during the summer. It is the ONLY YEAR ROUND SKI RESORT IN THE NATION. No, its not the best, its great, but honestly not the best. Timberline lodge is awesome, cool culture, not the best. Mt. Hood Meadows is better for hard riding and skiing.
2. Something that is the best. Smith Rock. OK, you said that you liked mainly sport and bouldering right, well how about the birthplace of sport climbing. Offers the countries third hardest route (OK, that was a couple of years ago, I'm sure Just Do It no longer holds that rank, nor dose it matter because I don't climb above 5.11, haha) Tons of good climbs here. Great quality rock. No there is no big wall, but I still say that Smith Rock is the best place for climbing in the west coast. OK, i know all of you Californians are saying "HOW CAN YOU THINK THAT?" but please listen. No crowds. No law enforcement. Nobody busting your ass for anything. Close to all the rock, no more than a mile hike for any of the 1000+ routes. NO TOURONS! God i don't like the scene that tourist bring. Cheep food in town, like 2 minutes away, literally. (Yes its a small hick town, but Bend, (also another great city to look into in Oregon) known as Portland's back yard and outdoor central is just like 15 minutes away.) The Raid qualifying rounds where held in Bend this year. The Raid is this huge adventure race with competitors coming from all over the world. Finals where held over the Swiss-Italy boarder I believe. Smith rock dose come with a drive time of about 3.5 hours from P-town though. However, it dose off real year round climbing. Most of P-Towns rain heads North or South, split by the Cascades, which offers a great rain shadow. I know people who drive there every weekend. I just need to find somebody who goes on my days off. Also way cheaper than camp 4. Nothing against Camp 4.
This doesn't even begin to account for all the other climbing close to Portland. You have Rocky Butte which is an awesome city crag right off of 82nd and Fremont in NE Portland. This place is sweet. Top rope for the most part, so you get the fun of rapping before you climb. You can place trad or lead sport on a lot of the routes if you want to though. I would say that there are at least 100 climbs between the 13 different walls here. A lot of the good climbs are slightly overhung, so you can still climb in the Portland drizzle if you really want to. There are also spots in just about ever little city directly surrounding Portland, all no more than 20 minutes from Downtown.
3. Town Life Rocks. First off, biking capital of the western world, quite literally. This city is so compact its like getting around in a large town. Around 75% of my co-workers bike to work. There are bike in movies, bike in restaurants, weekly city welcome bike rides screaming down the west hills, monthly bike rides of critical mass. Bikers are incredibly welcome in this town. Music scene is awesome, with tons of new bands coming out of this city. Very nicely liberal. Also, GREAT BEER. OK, 23 micro breweries within Portland city limits. This doesn't even begin to account for all the great beer coming from Bend like Deschutes brewery, or from Ashland and other great cities. Oh yeah, Ashland rocks too. God bless the Shakespeare Festival. Portland is also a young city. Both its attitude as well as population. Average age her is like 28. Tons of local weird events going on like the Soapbox Derby at Mt Tabor, or the stamped of Santa Clauses (yes, Portland has an annual stamped of hundreds of people dressed up as Santa Clause. Read Fugitives and Refugees by Chuck Palahniuk, who also realized Portland coolness and wrote a book about it. He also talks about the worlds only self cleaning house and other such oddities. He also wrote Fight Club. Also, there are tons of other sports here. Hood River, just like an hour out of town, in the the Wind Surfing/Kite Boarding capital OF THE WORLD. Kayaking is unbeatable, just watch PDX Kayaker. The Oregon coast is just over an hour away, all of which is publicly owned. No private beaches. Oregon, despite what most of you think, also has great surfing. It's by no means world class, but its way better than anything that the East Coast has to offer. Small crowds, constant 4 footers. That's all i want. The list goes on.
4. Housing. I love this cities buildings. Most of Portland was built right around 1900, so everything has this really funky, stylish edge. We still believe in the front porch. God bless the front porch. Cost are rising though, due in large to the high amounts of Californians moving here. They are still reasonable compared to other parts of the country. Example, there are houses going for sale that are around 5000 square feet right off of NW 23 Street, trendy capital of the city, AKA Trendy Third, going for less than $500,000. Now, you don't need to live in one of the most expensive parts of the city, nor do you need a house that big. I've got a neighborhood moving to California because of work, has an amazing job, and was considering going into early retirement, like 10 years early, just so he could stay in P-town.
5. Jobs. Least important in my mind. I just started the lowest paying job that I've ever had, and its also the best job I've ever had. Anyway, with all the Californians moving here, there is a huge market for housing. I use to do marketing for a custom home company by the name of Buena Vista Custom Homes. They just got ranked the fastest growing company in the nation, also done by Fortune Magazine. I swear i don't have a subscription. With all the rich people moving here, I'm sure that you wont have trouble.
6. Its West Coast Baby! I would even dare say the heart of it. OK, SF is cool, don't get me wrong, but still to close to LA if you ask me, to big, expensive. I think its lost its identity as a livable city. Vancouver sucks. No offense to Canada, Canada rocks. Vancouver is just weird though. Cigarettes cost 15 bucks, and everybody still smokes. Drugs addicts are out of control, and people are not that friendly. Seattle, traffic sucks, rains more than Portland, and the beer isn't as good. However, the San Juan Islands rock. I think that Portland is honestly the friendliest city in the west coast.
Setbacks to P-town.
There are things that you will sacrifice moving here, like being able to stay dry year round. We do have a drizzle. If you don't do well with gray skies, don't come here. I personally love the rain. However, summer is perfect here. Temperature remains very mild, due to proximity to the coast, air is clean, and the city just thrives. Also, to many Californians moving here. I wouldn't had of talked about Portland where this not an outdoor community. The way i see it, the more outdoorist the better. Otherwise, if somebody else would had of talked about this city, my response would had of been Shhhhhh to.

Don't move to Salt Lake. There's nothing to see here. The rock is chossy, the bolts (where there are any) are manky, the snow is wet and there's not enough of it to ski or board properly. There's smog, lots of congestion, Mormons will constantly harass you to join the church and knock on your doors at all hours of the night. You'll be arrested for possessing or drinking beer, and the mountains are overcrowded and not pretty at all.
Nothing to see here, move along.

I just moved to Bishop, CA...in my opinion, the best place ever...Yosemite, buttermilks, eastern sierra, hot springs, Mammoth Mountain. But really small, no jobs, and probably not for you.
Moab, UT would be my second choice, followed by
Salt Lake City, UT
Squamish, BC
then Bend, OR

Make some concessions and come up to Anchorage and check it out....the outdoor scene up here speaks for itself. Downsides are the fact that Anchorage is home to 290,000 people causing housing and traffic problems, but don't let that stop you....commuting to work via bike and skies on the extensive trail networks is the true path to happiness....watch out for the moose blocking the path!

One more vote for Portland, Oregon.
I was born in Portland then went to the University of Colorado at Boulder where I lived for 5 years (only 4 of them in school; I obviously didn't climb enough ;)). However, after 5 years there I decided that Portland was a FAR superior place to live and now I have moved back to P-town.
True, the climbing in and around Boulder is legendary and spectacular. Same goes for the rest of the outdoor activities. Lots to love about Boulder and you'll never hear me argue to the contrary.
Denver however, sucks ass compared to Portland. It's a sprawling suburban wasteland surrounded by sprawling empty wasteland. I spent a lot of time down there and it just doesn't have the character, the charisma, and the culture that Portland offers. I could go on and on, but Portland is a much better city if you ask me.
For pure climbing go with Colorado, the Bay Area, or Seattle or Vancouver B.C. For a well-rounded city that's perfect for those of us in our mid-20s I say move to Portland. There's a fantastic outdoor scene here with endless amounts of hiking, biking, running, kayaking, climbing, and whatever else you're interested in. If having 20 great crags within 30 minutes of your house is the #1 priority then Portland can't compete with Colorado's Front Range, but having lived in both areas I feel that Portland is better in just about every other way.
Hope you like PBR and our microbrews though. ;)

Gotta remember that work as architects, as this guy stated he is in his first post, would be hard to come by in a lot of these places.
Can't imagine trying to work as an architect even in SLC, let alone Moab, or places like that. Portland and San Franc would definitely be better for that kind of thing.

Riverside = Heaven on earth?
no no no no
Riverside = Traffic on the way to Josh/Bishop/Yosemite
Riverside = Ass end of LA
Riverside = Crappier air than San Diego
But at least it's closer to Idywild
My vote goes to Ft. Collins, Co or Portland, Or.
Ft. Collins had the New Belgium Brewery and Vedavoo to the north and Rocky Mtn National Park to the south.
Portland is probably the coolest city I've been to. My uncle lives in Beaverton (suburb) and it's a great place to go hang out.
