mm..
Just saw your invite. Thanks! Where did you go? I climbed outside Wed at Logtown (Lisbon OH--about an hour from my home in Bethany WV). i fixed some lines and toprope soloed, I spent most of my time working out Learning to Fly which I photographed on an earlier visit:
http://www.mountainproject.com/v/ohio/logtown/right_main_wall/106422091
Nice route...maybe redpont that next time.

I bouldered at "the wall" in Pittsburgh on Friday...early afternoon I was the only climber. $12 which is not bad, Funny rating system with the "V1s' = to about 5.9. Nonetheless, I couldn't pull anything harder than "V3" which I figure is in the V1 neighborhood. NIce place though with the wide assortment of boulders--even ones you can top out on. I hope to climb there once a week--maybe wed evenings.

Checked out the soutside fri eve with my son who was visiting from Minn--Dee's. Cheap pitchers compared to wisconsin.

Keep me posted on when you (or anyone) get out (or in) and i'll try to chek the forum more often.

Logtown Quarry - good times! I still have the urge to climb there when I come home from KY. Strange but true.

i like logtown quarry, i like the name. i like the routes that use drill marks for holds. i like that i can drop off my recycling in wellstown on the way to lisbon from west virginia (where they don't recycle) speaking of kentucky, i met carl prine at the G20 in pittsburgh--he's john prine's distant cousin. john's from kentucky...do you know about him, Marlene?

I guess it takes folks from Kentucky and West Virginia talking about climbing in Ohio to keep this Western PA thread alive...

I figured with all that musical talent evident in your web presence you should know about JP:

Here are the lyrics to the Prine classic Paradise that speaks volumes about the worst of WV:

When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn.

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill.

Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.

When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am.

Prine is one of my "John" heros, along with John Gill, John Long, & John Bachar (RIP)...

Oh, speaking of climbing, Logtown was superb yesterday. Not another soul out. Just me and the leaves. Sweet...

What/when did you climb there?

I moved to KY in 2007. Logtown from 2003/04 to 07. Climbed with Bill "Charlie".

It needs more than that to keep it alive. Smile SWPA needs more climbers that climb. Not many motivated climbers around here. Never has been. Hardly ever see folks at the crags. I could post about trip reports, developments, directions, invite people to show them how to get to the crags, whatever... It'll never change the SWPA climbing mentality. On a positive note, I guess it keeps the crags private to those of us that use them. The cold is setting in, even less climbers during ice season. I'll post (toast) to that. Crazy

Marlene: Keeping with the lyrical theme, I guess you are now the Kentucky Woman..."She shines with her own kind of light..."

"there are two kinds of people in this world: those that like neil diamond, and those that don't" ...i guess i'm the former (quote: Bill Murray in "What About Bob?")

Climbinpa: I checked out your photos of ohiopyle...sweet stuff...gotta get there before the weather turns...but when it does, where is that ice climb? did you lead that?

Soon enough... Around here the ice will be plentiful. It is all leadable (sometimes more than others). It's all local right here in our back yards. If you are serious and want to go, get in touch. We'll show you around. Drytool training is about to begin. Loads of local climbing. Check out this link for some video clips. Ray "Rayman" Burnsworth, a good friend and local climber as well, has been following us around the woods for about 10 years documenting the local scene in short films.

Whats up Pete... Glad to hear you liked them. I'll let Rayman know. He puts a LOT of time and work into the videos. Have you guys been up at Coll's much recently? I've been meaning to head up there again soon to check out your problems. We boulered there some years ago, but access back then wasn't as good as it is now. Nice to see you've put some time in there. Also glad to hear that the bolts were rectified there. I figured they'd cause a stirring of the ECP folks that have laid claim to the short outcrops there. I usualy climb there once a year just to remind myself that its a fun place for a day and nothing more. As far as the ice goes, we've got stuff that is comparable to the Daks, and New England. Pretty rare this far south. Its killer climbing. Far more impressive than our rockclimbing. We've had folks from all over come just to check it out. It's a good way to stay in shape through the winter months. Pirate

I haven't had to chance to get to Coll's lately due to some legal and financial trouble Crazy... But as you can see in those pictures there are more then a few quality projects and problems. A little bit scary for people with all the snakes, but i like that stuff. Right now i'm training on plastic like crazy, hopefully next time i get out there some good things will happen. I know Mike is looking for people to join him at Colls.

It was stupid for me to even try to bolt there in the first place, what can i say, i'm still a noob Laugh. We figured since it was state game lands that no one would care, and we were there doing ALOT of top-roping prior to the bolting effort and never saw anyone, i thought it was abandoned. O well, the boulders are better anyways.

I'm interested in the ice climbing just because it looks so dangerous! I might have to invest in some picks when i can.

There are a ton of places to climb here in southwestern PA. I love climbing at Laurel Mountain, at Beam Rocks which by the way, climbers and hikers out there beware of glass and other trash that others leave behind, it will ruin your gear. Although, the view is gorgeous and many climbing techniques are involved here. I love it, and also Ohio Pyle. I am looking for climbing partners, I live 22 miles east of Pittsburgh.

I occasionally go to Breakneck, but I used to climb there a lot. Lost Crag occasionally, as it's a bit of a hike. I like to climb at Cooper's Rock, White Rocks, McConnell Mills, Coll's Cove. Stay in touch, we can meet at Breakneck next week if you have wheels.
