Ever get super bored while belaying? What do you do to keep yourself from falling asleep and droping the leader, espically when there is no one else around.

Good question, hard answer.

Not much you can do. I hum or whistle sometimes; songs I really like or one of my own.

I try to plan the easiest moves by watching what my partner does and see how to improve it.

I chat with my partner (I have a friend that doesn't mind constant conversation).

YOU"LL NEVER STOP US!!!

Sorry, though this was directed towards me.

Seriously, I can't remember the last time I was bored. People seem to rely too much on external stimuli for entertainment and get bored way too often. What ever happened to using ones mind?

Simple cure for boredom... THINK!

There are an infinite array concepts and ideas you can think about when you are forced to sit for long periods of time, choose a few and go to town.

One good way to get in the practice of thinking is to read, A LOT! Then you will at least have a few ideas to draw on at a moments notice.

Good Luck.

Is not life a hundred times too short for us to bore ourselves?

We like to talk to each other and sing songs back and forth between leader and belayer. It relaxes the leader and helps with the boredom. It also keeps the belayer focused on the task at hand.

I agree with Nate. I was just about to say something like "you could listen to music," but then I realized how stupid that idea really was. Picture yourself sitting there, belaying the leading with a diskman on, and he/she's up there yelling; "Take, take!" And, you're just sitting there, head bangin' to some Metallica. How embarrassing!

Just yell at your partner from time to time:

"uuuh... how does this "gree-gree" thing works anyway?"

"Hang on to the rock, i'm going to let you go for a while, my harness is killing me!"

"WAIT! I think the rope went in the gri-gri the wrong way!"

"OH MY GOD!!! What's that crawling in the rock to your left?"

Just use your imagination!

Yo! Yellow guy! WAVE!!!

That's it... keep doing that...

I agree with you interruptor. You had some funny ones. I always tell my dad some things like I don't think I know how to work this ATC, and if he asks for help I usually tell him to GO UP! duh! You can tell them things like, "wow look how many cool loops I can make with all this slack in the rope!" Or just stare at the clouds!

I'm with boretribe on this one. Maybe you could consider *why* you're bored when you're in such beautiful surroundings. Granted, I havent been climbing very long, but I cant recall being "bored" while on belay, or on any part of a climbing trip, period. If nothing else, I just stare at the landscape in awe. (Of course, I'm also from Dallas, so I dont take mtns on the horizon for granted.)

Another thing is to maybe try relaxing into your boredom. I recently read that boredom is the untrained mind's attempt at meditation. Give it time and enjoy the feeling of nothing to stress about for a while.

Just don't drop your climber!

I find a fun activity to do is to pay attention to the belay. That always keeps me entertained and generally keeps my climber happy.

I guess maybe trad is different sometimes in where you can't see the leader and don't really have to pay super close attention, but in those cases I just echo what others have said. Enjoy nature.

Usually when I belay I am lounging back on my bouldering pad, and happy that I have a gri-gri so that I can takethe brake hand off. And trying not to think about the inevitable trauma and misery that I will soon endure when it becomes MY turn to head up whatever climb it is that my partner is on.

Just this last weekend gone I was aid climbing with Lee (Manacubus) and of course aid climbing for the belayer is like watching paint peel so we had a book to read. When that got a bit tedious it was nap time.
